The Sweet Pursuit by Golden Autumn -
Chapter 205
"Huh?" Suzy pretended to be surprised. "You can call it a transactional marriage. It was decided a long time ago and just ended about two months ago,”"George's voice was steady and calm, yet indifferent as if he was talking about other people's affairs. Suzy pondered slightly and asked, "So, around the time we got together? Why did you end it? Don't like your wife?"
George felt that it seemed strange to talk to Suzy about this issue, so not wanting to reveal any more, he merely said in a low voice, "I haven't even met the person I married." Suzy shrugged her shoulders. "Sounds like a sad story." George looked at her and disagreed. "Why is it sad? The Shirley family wanted the marriage because they wanted to use the Laines to help them through their business crisis. That was the purpose. As for Ms. Shirley and I, we were just their tools. There's no relationship between us, and I think she knows very well that the marriage between us would've ended sooner or later." Suzy thought for a while, then nodded slowly. "You're right. You and Ms. Shirley were destined to meet but not fated to be together."
George's thin lips parted lightly. "Other than that, I've never thought of getting married." "Why? Don't your parents share a great relationship?" Suzy asked. She had always believed that only people with parents who were unfeeling toward one another and those with past trauma about their family would oppose getting married. George's eyes were deep as he slowly shook his head. "No. My father doesn't love my mother."
Suzy showed a puzzled expression. The last time she went to the Laine family's house, Graham might look serious and unsmiling, but he respected Gemma. Plus, Gemma had a gentle face and a gentle personality -not at all like a woman who was neglected by her husband.
However, it seemed as if George did not want to talk more about the things going on between his parents. He merely took a sip of tea, stared at her lightly, and smiled. "So, isn't it good for the two of us to continue on like this?" Suzy looked calm and asked, "What if one day you meet someone you like?"
She actually wanted to ask, 'What if the woman named Yvette came back one day?' George's jet - black eyes were half-narrowed. His long index finger stroked the rim of the teacup as he said calmly, "Just because I like her, there's still no need for me to get married."
Suzy's eyes turned dimmer as she looked up at the sky. The wisteria vines were dense, and she could only see the stars in the sky through tiny gaps. She jokingly said, "Then you should be thanking your big brother and sister-in-law for giving birth to Ean and Enoah, That's why your mother isn't insistent on you getting married."
George laughed with a snort. "Have you been watching too many soap operas?" Suzy raised her eyebrows and asked, "Judging from your words alone, it seems like you've watched plenty yourself?" George showed a helpless expression. "My mother likes them, so I was forced to take a few glances."
Suzy could not help but want to laugh, especially when she thought of Gemma, who apparently liked watching such shows as a wealthy old lady.
She felt that no matter what secrets the Laines had, their upbringing was still exemplary. For example, George had a good relationship with his big brother. One was engaged in research while the other was in charge of the family business. Without those bloody conspiracy battles for the family properties, the whole family would be very harmonious. The two chatted for a while, and George looked at his watch to find that it was already 10 o'clock. However, none of those pots of Epiphyllum were blooming. Suzy also found it strange. She squatted in front of the flower pots and watched carefully.
George said, "Get inside and get some sleep. I can stand and watch here." He knew how much Suzy loved to sleep. If the two were not together at night, she would go to bed at ten o'clock sharp every night. Suzy wanted to say that she was not sleepy, but there was a flash in her eyes. Then, she turned around and smiled while saying, "Alright. I'll go to sleep for a while and change shifts with you later." "I can do it alone. Since we stayed behind, I don't think Mr. River will make things hard for us anymore." George caressed her head and said, "Sleep at ease!"
Suzy nodded. "Then I'll get going now!" "Goodnight!" George leaned over and kissed her on the side of her face.
