CHAPTER 055

I ended up staying at Dahlia's house that night because she was the one with the most room.

She lived in a house by herself and she had a spare bed in there. So I was more than happy to take it.

When I finally lied down that night, I felt relief wash over me as I was finally able to lie down.

The bed was a bit hard and not what I was used to, but I wasn't going to complain.

I stared up at the ceiling clutching my chest at where my necklace used to be.

I kept trying to remember the last time I felt it hanging around my neck. It's pretty heavy so I

was usually aware of it.

It had to be when I was running through the forest or when I was in the water.

I could only imagine how the dragons are behaving at home.

They wouldn't know where I am, but they would know that the necklace has been lost to me. And that's not a good sign. If they don't know who to serve, then they tend to go off the deep end. They can go a little crazy and scare everyone around them.

I hope they don't hurt anyone.

I really hope mom can still control them. They know her and they were ruled by her for so many years that I was hoping she'd be able to get them under control.

"Hey Emma." Dahlia said.

"Yeah." I answered.

"Do you really believe that there's a fated mate out there for everyone?"

"I have to believe it. I've seen it." I said.

"How often?"

"With everyone I know. They don't settle for anything except their fated mate. If they can't find that mate in our pack then they are allowed to travel to other packs in search of them." I explained.

"I didn't know that was even an option."

"Well, I don't think it is here. But you shouldn't complain. After what I've seen, you guys have s**t figured out. I mean, I would love it if wolf packs were this simple. Everyone helping everyone else. Communal meals, self sufficient. I'm actually

impressed with the way you guys

live." I said.

"Really? But don't you live in a castle?"

"Yeah. That doesn't mean s**t. I do have people to cook and clean for me. But being the princess around here means that everyone just does what I say and they don't talk to me like a normal person. They think it's their duty to just agree with me and I hate it. I would actually rather a little more of the push back. Someone to challenge me." I said.

"Well, you'll get plenty of that here. If you don't pull your own weight."

"I intend to."

"How long do you think those drugs will stay in your system?"

"I don't know. It depends on how much they gave me. I think they gave me a big dose because

a smaller one wouldn't have worked on me." I said.

"Well, you're obviously welcome here until you can get home." She said.

"Thanks." I said.

Dahlia and I chatted for a while that night and I realized that this was my second night away

from home.

Ben would have to be going out of his mind by now. I really hope he was alright. I mean, I told him to stay back while I went with Lucas. I hope he doesn't blame himself for not being there. It's not his fault. I will never blame him for it.

I had a bit of a restless sleep that night and when I did finally doze off, I kept having horrible dreams about Lucas and that look on his face when he was chasing me.

I would then see Ben searching the forest for me. Looking for whatever clues he could and refusing to go home until he found me.

When I woke up it was early morning, the sun was just coming up. I thought back to Ben and I had a feeling that it was more than just a dream. It felt more than like. It felt real. It felt like that's what he was doing.

I guess I just know him better than I realized. Because I know that he will keep hunting until he

finds me.

I just hope he doesn't get himself killed while looking for me.

I got up and saw that Dahlia was still asleep so I crept across the room and out the door to

the middle of the village.

No one was awake yet and I stood there staring at the forest around the village, taking in the fresh air and the peacefulness of what this place has to offer. "You're up early." Walker said behind me.

"Yeah. Strange bed." I said.

"Did you sleep alright?"

"As good as I expected."

"I heard you and Dahlia talking last night. After you went to bed." He said.

"You were spying on us?" I asked, finally turning to look at him.

"I heard what you said about fated mates. That everyone has a fated mate but because we're

a small pack that stays to ourselves, we don't have that luxury. I have to try and find mates

that aren't related to each other."

"Yeah. That would be hard. I guess that's how you can control the number of pack members you have as well." I said.

"Yeah. I guess so." He said.

"Why do you look bothered by that? It's obviously worked for you for decades now."

"It has. But after hearing what you said about Dahlia's parents...I had to kill them because they were trying to kill other people." He said.

"Oh. Because they were near their fated mates but couldn't be with them."

"Yeah. That means that their fated mates were in the pack. But we don't know how to find

them. How do we know who are fated mates or not?"

"Well, you can't tell until you turn 18. That's when the mate bond kicks in. But if there's an age gap then the one who turns 18 first will know and the other won't feel the bond until they turn 18." I explained. "And what does it feel like?"

"Well, if you're over 18 then usually you know straight away and you want to claim that mate.

You want to mate and mark with them. But I don't know if that's how it would go with you guys. I mean, you haven't experienced fated mates in so long that it could be different." I explained.

"Well, can you tell me?" He asked.

"They feel like they are your other half. Like you've been missing a part of your soul until you 3/4

finally meet that one person. You finally feel free, instead of feeling like you've been treading

water until that moment." I explained.

"Does it feel like the oxygen has been knocked out of you?"

"Yeah. How do you know that?"

"I was just guessing. I've heard stories. My grandfather used to tell me stories. I thought they were all made up. I'd never heard of fated mates before so I thought he was crazy." Walker said.

We ended up going for a walk around the village in the forest talking while he was trying to understand more about mates.

I think he was feeling guilty about killing Dahlia's parents because he just didn't understand what was going on with them.

So I was happy to explain it all to them. I knew that they would need to know in case it happened again.

told him that they would be seeking their true mate out, even if they are mated to someone else.

They really were cut off from the rest of the world. I mean, they didn't even understand these basic wolf emotions anymore because they'd learnt to ignore them and do things their way. really hope I was helping them by telling them all of this stuff. But I didn't know if it was elping them or hurting them.

They seemed to be doing pretty good before I got here and disrupted everything.
