The Twin Alphas’ Fated Mate -
Epilogue
15 Years Later...
~Maxton~
I sit down in the desk chair of my father's office. I look around the room and imagine how it feels to be the head of one of the alpha meetings they hold here. I turn the chair around and look out the floor to ceiling windows. Red River pack. The strongest pack on the east coast. It'll be all mine someday. I will be the Alpha in just 5 short years.
The door to the office opens and I quickly stand.
"I'm sorry dad. I shouldn't be in your chair." I say. He smiles.
"Don't worry, Maxton. Unlike your other father, I don't care if you sit there." My father, Alpha Elliot, as always been the easygoing one. My other father, Alpha Arthur, it's more strict. Both of them are driven to make me the best Alpha I can be. I guess that's why my mom, Luna Mercury, is the perfect balance. When I'm with her, all my worries wash away. She always says I need to make room for things that make me happy outside of my future alpha duties. That's why she taught me how to draw and paint. It calms me and makes me happy.
"You used to sit there all the time growing up. You and your uncle." Dad says. I look at him. He's talking about Kaden, his younger brother. Although, Kaden is more like a brother to me and another child to my parents. My dads were 21 when Kaden was born. There was a huge fight about my mom and who she was supposed to be with. Kaden got mixed up in it and was brought here after my grandfather, Garret was killed and Kaden's mother disappeared. They assume she died too, but who knows. Shortly after that, they found out my mom was pregnant with me. Kaden and I are less than a year apart in age. So even though he's technically my uncle, we were raised like brothers. We even shared a room when we were kids. But pack members aren't exactly nice to Kaden. They think he should be banished when he turns 18 because of what Garret did to the pack. I think it's unfair because Kaden was an infant when all this happened. He couldn't do anything. He's innocent. And my dads have made it clear to the pack Kaden is family, but that doesn't stop kids from bullying him badly at school until I step in, or from adults scoffing at his presence. It makes me angry. Kaden is my brother and he should have the same respect I do.
"So, what did you need to talk to me about?" Dad asks me.
"Oh right. Uh I wanted to run something by you. Something I've been thinking about for awhile."
"Go on."
"Well, I've been thinking about who I want to be my Beta and Gamma. You and dad said you guys chose around this age who you wanted." I say.
"That's correct. We had been friends with Jack since childhood and Ethan is a very close cousin. We wanted people we could count on. People that were loyal." Dad explains. I nod.
"Right. That's what I want too. I just want to know what you think of who I want." My dad looks at me so I continue. "I've heard the rumours saying I'll probably choose Colin and Kody because they're Jack and Ethan's sons. And while I am friends with them, I don't want them to be my beta and gamma."
"I see. I've heard these rumours as well, but I made it clear to Jack and Ethan you are free to choose who you want and to prepare their sons to not expect it to be handed to them. I see now that was a good thing." Dad says. "So who have you chosen?"
"For my gamma, I want Devin."
"Ah, Daniel and Paige's son. They'll be thrilled. What made you choose him?"
"He's had it rough. Being born to someone who wasn't originally a part of our pack isn't easy. Some people look down on Daniel, and by extension, Devin. He knows what loyalty is and has never left my side, even when people put him down."
"That's a very good reason to have someone as your gamma. And who did you choose for beta?" Dad asks. I suck in a breath.
"I chose Kaden." I say. Dad looks at me.
"I have to say, I am a little surprised. I know you two are close, but it's a complicated situation. Kaden is still technically your uncle."
"Technically, yes, but we see each other as brothers. He's told me on more than one occasion that you, dad and mom are the only people he'd call his parents."
"Even so, you know how hard Kaden has had it because of Garret. The pack has never fully accepted him, no matter how much your father and I enforce it. This burden will pass on to you if you make him beta."
"Once Kaden is beta, no one can bother him like that anymore. He'll be a ranked member. No one would dare say anything to him." I say.
"Is that the only reason you want to give Kaden the title?" Dad asks me.
"Of course not. I know you know that I've stood up for Kaden before at school. But Devin has told me there are countless times that Kaden has gotten in fights because he heard someone talking back about either me or you and dad for how 'stupid we are for accepting a traitor into our family'. Devin says Kaden does it not because they're insulting him, but because they're talking badly about his family. About the Alphas. Kaden doesn't hesitate to protect us. He would make a very good beta. He and Devin are the ones I want by my side when it's my turn to take over the pack." I say. Dad sighs and sits down in his chair.
"If this is what you want, we will support you on this. But I just want you to be prepared for what's to come." Dad says.
"I will be." I say.
"Right. Now there's something I need to tell you."
"What's that?" I ask.
"There's a school in the south that is for Alphas in training. They teach you everything you need to know, other than specifics about your pack. Your father and I went there when we were 15. We would like you to attend." Dad tells me. I nod.
"When do I leave?"
