Donna (Koko’s mom)

“Are you sure it’s the palace?” The man that was driving the taxi asked me for the umpteenth time and I responded with the same tired expression that I had before

When Gad told me that the daughter I had despised so much was now going to become the Luna Queen, I could see that my luck was finally changing after so long.

All I had to do was go there and fake a few tears and immediately she would forgive me like the foolish person she was.

That was if the cab driver could take me there instead of asking stupid questions.

“Yes, I’m heading to the palace, that’s what I told you.”

“Are you sure? because there is an event going on in the palace right now and commoners are not allowed in…”

“And what makes you think I’m a commoner like yourself?”

I asked him in a bitter tone and he actually slowed down his cab just so that he could look at me from head to toe in his backseat. In the brief three seconds he did that, I felt like his eyes were raking through my entire body.

“You’re not?”

I felt like slapping his head back to the position that it should have been in the first place to focus on the road, but instead I said through clenched teeth.

“No and it might interest you to know that I’m actually related to somebody that is very important in Palace.” I bragged to him, as I puffed out my chest.

“Is that so?” He asked in the most patronizing tone I’ve ever heard in my entire life, but then I just told myself to keep calm.

The money Gad gave me was almost completely gone, one of my stupid boyfriends had stolen a huge part of it and now I was practically paying through my nose to get here.

As I looked out the window, I reminded myself that in a few moments this pitiful way of existing would no longer be mine, I would milk that stupid girl for every penny that she was worth.

I had already began to imagine the kind of house I would buy and the dresses that would fill my wardrobe. I stared at my lovely fingers as I imagined them covered with gems and gold rings as they should have been from the start.

Finally the moon goddess was compensating me for giving me such a worthless mate, I would still get to live like the queen I was.

Finally we arrived at the Palace gates and when I went down and paid the cab driver, he looked at me with the nastiest expression I had ever seen in a while.

“What is the meaning of this? Please, I want my full money!”

And he was yelling so loudly that somebody that was inside the palace could have heard him with ease. I thought I had enough money, but I guess I had chipped away from it with the snacks I bought along the way.

It was really so embarrassing, I told him that this was all I had and he got down from his cab and grabbed me by my arm.

“Look, I don’t want any trouble, so let’s do this, either you find a way to give me my money right now or you get back into the cab and I drive you back to where I picked you up from.”

I felt like digging a hole and crawling inside, even children that were passing by with their parents were staring at me and pointing fingers and I knew that some tongues were also wagging.

“Must you embarrass me like this? Fine! I’m going to get you your money, but I’ll need to go inside and talk to the person that I have there, she will definitely pay you…”

I said to him as I took my hand away from his grasp, I marched over to the guys that were there standing to the gate and he was following me from behind like a shadow.

A guard looked at me with a blank expression then one said in a monotone voice.

“Sorry ma but no commoners are allowed in the palace today…”

This stupid cab driver did not know how much trouble he was putting himself into, so I decided to show him. I crossed my hands together and then I said it to the guard on my left.

“Well that means that there will be no problem letting me inside, because I am not a commoner, in fact I am even the mother of your present Queen…”

As soon as I said that they both burst into laughter, even the cab driver that was behind chuckled.

“How dare you laugh at me? I fumed that all of them.

“Don’t worry when I see my daughter I’ll make sure that not only does she fire you from this Palace, but make it impossible for you to find a job again!”

Suddenly their expressions stiffened up.

“Look ma’am, we are only respecting you because you are an old woma-“

Unable to hold the anger that had been building up for a long time, I immediately slapped the guard that called me old across his face.

“It is that wretched woman that the moon goddess cursed your father to have as a mate that is old and useless!”

And that was how the chaos broke out, or at least it was about to when suddenly a dignified and elegant looking beautiful young woman was passing by from inside the palace.

She saw what was going on and came out before that foolish guard was able to manhandle me.

“What on earth is going on here?”

She asked the guards and they immediately turned to her with a bow.

“Lady Laci, there is nothing for you to worry about, just a crazy old woman that was…”

“Who are you calling crazy?”

Her eyes came over to me and then she focused on my face for a long time as if she was trying to remember where she had seen me before, though I had never met her in my life.

“Sorry ma’am, but today is of much importance, if you have anything that is so important that you have to tell, it will have to wait till tomorrow or at the earliest later this evening…”

Was that the thing that the cab driver was talking about before?

“My dear I assure you that what I also came for is very important…”

“She’s saying that she is the queen’s mother…”

The guard finally said something sensible and then she came closer to me scanning my face more critically.

“Are you really Koko’s mother?”

I immediately nodded. “Yes I’m her mother and I really need to see her right now please help me…”

She stared at me hesitantly for a moment and then she called the maid that was passing by.

“Please I want you to go and get the Queen for me. Tell her that it is very important.”

I was smiling from ear-to-ear imagining how the stupid cab driver and the guards would soon be begging me, but all my hope was smashed into the rocks when Koko finally came after the Laci herself had gone to fetch her and the first thing she said was.

“What is this woman doing here?”
