Chapter 34

Alpha Niyole POV

The door of my room was suddenly flung open. Without looking up, I know the only person bold enough to do that would be my beta.

And I was right.

“How was it, Niyol? Did you continue from where you stopped last night?” Chester asked, grinning.

“Did you just invade my privacy to talk about my private life? Are you kidding me, Chester?” I asked, shaking my head.

“You can’t blame me for being curious. I… I was just being curious… that’s why I came over to your room immediately,” he said, avoiding my eyes.

“Really? You were curious? Alright, you can leave now. You must have satisfied your curiosity.” I said.

With just a glance at his face, I knew he was hiding something. We have been friends for a long time and I know his every expression.

He always looks flustered whenever he is trying to hide something from me. Others might not know, but being with him for years, I could pick it out without breaking a sweat.

Besides, there was no way he would come all the way just to ask about my private life. I know he must be hiding something again.

“Chester, are you running from blind dates again?” I asked.

He lowered his gaze and it seemed he was struggling to say something. Just when I wanted to ask him again, he raised his head

“Help me, bro, I really hate these blind dates. It’s not my fault that I haven’t gotten myself a mate all these years.” he sounded pitiful.

“But you should also understand your parents. They want the best for you,” I said, not getting swayed by his face.

“You are the only one I can count on bro! I can only hide here every time. I am sure they would get tired soon,” he said, trying to cling to me.

“Do you know they had started thinking you might actually be in love with me? I said, stifling my laughter.

He immediately let go of my hands as his face scrunched up in disgust. “Oh please! I am straight! Perfectly straight!”

“Then get married, dude,” I said.

“Just because you have a mate now, you are lecturing me? I hate you, man!” He said, looking at me as if I just betrayed him.

“Yeah. I don’t need your love either. Can you leave now? I need to freshen up so I can have dinner with my mate.” I said.

“Flaunting!” He humps, putting his hands across his chest.

I ignored his words as I got ready to go to the bathroom. But something told me that it wasn’t really what prompted Chester to barge in my door. That was when I picked up a hesitating sigh from him just as I wanted to enter the bathroom.

Turning to him, I asked. “What is it this time?”

“Are you… are you alright?” I sensed a tone of worry in his words.

I didn’t understand why he was worried until he said, “I overheard some women talking. They were saying something about your mate being cursed.”

So that was the main reason he burst into my room. I turned to look at him, forcing a smile.

“I guess news travels faster than I thought in this kingdom. Even I, as the alpha, have no secrets. Get me the butler now!”

“Alright, Alpha.” Chester bowed before leaving.

I was burning in rage, but I tried to keep myself in check. I don’t want to hurt anyone around me anymore, but these people were making me lose my sense of reasoning.

The door opened again. My beta and the butler entered my chamber. I saw my beta shaking in fright.

I guess my anger wasn’t all suppressed.

“Who spread those rumors about my mate?” I asked.

“Your majesty, I can assure you that the servants here haven’t had contact with her since she came. I just sent two maidservants to her to help in her bath but they haven’t been out yet.” My Butler replied, shaking in fear.

I knew he was telling the truth, because I was using my alpha aura on him. He can’t possibly lie under the intensity of my fury.

“Leave!”

My Butler scrambled out of my chambers even as he almost hit his head on the wall. I faced my beta for an explanation.

“I only heard it from a group of socialite ladies. I will need to ask Laci or your mate if they received any visitors while at the hospital.” Chester replied.

“Stay for dinner.” I simply told him before banging the door of the bathroom shut.

Watching my mate picking on her food silently, the anger in my heart began to build up again. She seemed shy and afraid of everyone and everything.

I had to dismiss Chester when I felt her looking uncomfortable in the dining room.

It was like she had faced lots of humiliation. She tend to be pessimistic about everything and everyone around her.

“Are you not hungry or you are not satisfied with the food?” I tried to strike up a conversation with her.

“I… the food is okay. I… I like it.” she said, her eyes lowered.

“Look at me, Koko,” I said to her.

She slowly raised her head, not daring to look into my eyes. There was definitely something wrong.

“Can I ask you something, Koko?” I said.

She was about to nod her head, but I guess she remembered my words. So she answered softly. “Yes, you can.”

“Who else visited you at the hospital?” I asked.

I saw her hesitating. It seemed like she doesn’t want to tell me who they were. Was she afraid I would punish them?

“Are you… are you going to punish them?” She asked timidly, licking her lower l*p that was smeared with sauce.

I held myself back from k!ssing those lips of hers. I felt aroused just seeing her lick her lips. She looked so innocent yet dangerous to my heart.

I swallowed hard on my food. I guess it was my turn to lower my eyes. Couldn’t afford to strip her naked and make love to her in the dining room, can I?

I closed my eyes to shut off the dirty thoughts racing through my mind.

“Are you…going to punish them?” She asked again.

How could I answer when I am feeling all horny just listening to her voice.” No… but… I might if it’s worth it.”

“Don’t… don’t punish anyone. I… I am used to it already. They are your people. I think with time they will get used to it.” She replied.

Then she added. “And… maybe they don’t get used to it, I can just… leave.”

Hearing her saying she was going to leave felt like a knife was piercing through my heart.” You are going nowhere, Koko. Don’t even think about it.”

“But…”

“No buts. You have to promise me you won’t leave.” I told her.

I saw her struggling within herself before replying weakly. “Okay, but you have to promise not to punish those people.”

“Why? Don’t you feel angry being insulted?” I asked.

“I do. But, I have seen worse humiliation. Though it hurts every time, I am already used to it.” She replied, her smile looking bitter.

What had she suffered? What made her lose her self-confidence?

I saw her waiting for my answer. “Alright, I won’t punish them for your sake but just this once.”

She continued picking on her food while my eyes refused to leave her.

I smiled at her clumsiness as she picked on her food. “Eat some more. You need your strength. The doctor advised that you eat a lot.”

I watched her eating until she managed to finish the food before her. I will make sure the servants send some snacks and fruits for her later.

She didn’t seem too comfortable in my presence. Maybe I will just tell Laci to always keep her company whenever she wanted to eat.

I guess that was what I would do.

“Thank you for the food,” She said, bowing.

I just smiled and called on the servants to escort her to her room.

As soon as she was gone, I mind link my beta to join me in the dining.

“Your majesty.”

“I want you to check for those people that paid her a visit in the hospital. She refused to say anything.”

“What do we do to them?”

“Just get me their names first. I want to know who they are.” I replied.

“Yes, Alpha!”

As Chester left, my mood changed drastically. I need to put a stop to their talks. I wonder why they would even come up with such a flimsy excuse.

Just because she had black eyes? How dare they label her a curse? She is my mate and I will protect her with all that I have.

No one has the right to mock her, not even my mother! And I was going to make sure of it.

But first I need to quench the hunger in me. I needed another cold bath tonight!
