Chapter 99

Chester’s POV

I brushed my nose, despite the nose mask I was wearing; the thick and disturbing smell of urine filtered into my nose as I walked down the stairs to the darkest and honestly most disgusting dungeon in the palace.

This was where we often threw the most hardened criminals in the kingdom. Life was indeed rather ironic. While there was a bustling party above my head that I had arranged, I was down here in this disgusting place.

As I passed through the cells, most of the inmates poured curses on me; ranting wildly like animals behind their bars. They screamed and banged against it, but I did not pay any attention to them and just made a beeline towards the person I was here to see. Guided by the weak, flickering light of the naked bulbs that swung above my head.

I looked at the skeletal figure behind the bars, now wondering if this was truly the person I’d come to see because she looked like nothing other than a shell of her former self.

“Why are you here?”

Her voice sounded just like fingernails slowly scratching against a chalkboard.

“Did you come here just to see how miserable I am? to laugh at me and spit at my face? fine then go ahea-“

“I didn’t come here for anything pointless like that, Scarlet…” I cut into her words and she just chuckled.

”Then why are you here? because you care about me?”

I breathed in heavily, and then let it out of my chest.

“I heard that you haven’t been eating and you keep throwing away any food that’s been given to you…”

She didn’t respond to what I said immediately, rather she gave me a blank look with her sunken eyes, then let out another chuckle that sounded more like she was being choked.

“So even when I’m down here in this rat hole, you guys are still watching me like hawks.”

She began to draw circles on the cold concrete floor with her fingers that were now so thin that they looked like needles.

“Don’t worry, I won’t deprive any of you the pleasure of taking my life…”

Her chuckle broke into a disturbing burst of laughter that shook her bony body. Not allowing my poker expression to fall I said to her.

“It is not yet confirmed if you will be sentenced to death, if you at least try to act like you are sorry the alpha and his mate might have mercy on you,”

She didn’t say anything for a while and I hoped that she was actually considering my words. But then she just let her out one of her choked laughs.

“So you came all the way down here just to tell me jokes? Stop giving me false hope. I already know I’m as good as dead…”

She turned her back on me facing the wall.

“The only thing I regret is not being able to kill that b**** when I had the chance…”

I sighed, my fingers sinking into my palm. What did I think was going to happen?

“You wouldn’t be here right now Scarlet if it wasn’t for your envy, I hope that you can at least come to realize that before your judgment.”

As I turned to leave she called my name and I froze in my steps.

“Where is Henry? if you are going to kill us. At least allow us to spend the rest of our lives together… You can consider that as my death wish…”

She paused for a moment and it sounded like she was sobbing when she spoke again.

“…Even hardened criminals like us deserve at least that right?”

I adjusted the mask on my face again. Gosh this place felt so bad.

“You know you are not in any position to be making demands, right?”

She didn’t say anything but just kept facing in the wall.

“But if you eat your meals from now on I’ll consider bringing it up to the alpha,”

She chuckled once again, “I wouldn’t necessarily call what they bring down here food but if all I have to do to see him again is to eat it, then I will…”

“Nothing is confirmed yet but I’ll see what I can do… Until then, search deep within yourself and try to realise what you did wrong.”

After saying that I left the dungeon rushing up with stairs hurriedly without paying much attention which caused me to bump into someone coming down.

We both lost our balance for a moment and I quickly steadied myself, grabbing the person in front of me by the waist so that they would not fall too.

”Chester?”

The person called my name and I looked up.

“Juliana? What are you doing here?” I asked her, letting go of her waist immediately as if I had just touched a naked wire.

“Well, I was coming down to interrogate someone here about the case that I’m investigating now, what about you, what are you doing down here shouldn’t you be at the party?”

I forced out a smile.

“Well I had some business to wrap up here too.”

I told her and she carefully studied my face.

“By some business, I’m guessing that it was Scarlet, right?”

There was no point in denying, she could see right through me.

“Yes.”

She didn’t say anything for a while then she placed her hand on my shoulder.

“I have some business to discuss with you too, do you mind waiting a few seconds for me? I’ll be out in a jiffy.”

Curious at what she had to discuss with me, I nodded. and as she said, she came back in a few minutes.

”Follow me.”she said not adding any other explanation and I followed her to the spare quarter in the palace where she had stayed occasionally during the search for the Alpha’s mate, she didn’t say a single word until we reached there and then she closed the door behind us and locked it then she said;

“Now, let’s talk about OUR business, Chester.”
