Twisting Her Fate
Chapter 139

**5 weeks after separation**

The atmosphere is so exuberant that no one notices the doctor walk out with a frown on his face without saying a word to anyone.

All the occupants of the room are too busy watching two little heartbeats side by side. Twins could it be any more perfect?

As they finish up the scan, checking for limbs, taking sizes and doing all the usual things. Leilani walks out with the printed out photos clutched in her hand feeling a sense of content.

She is imagining the look on Connor's face when she brings him the news, picturing his joyous expression.

Picturing him taking her into his arms, holding her close and telling her that all he's ever wanted is her and their babies, marking her right on the spot, making them a true family, two lovers and two children. Could anything be more perfect in the world? The dreams of a family and a pack that was shattered five weeks ago seemed to be fitting together once again.

After a night of celebration, Leilani packs up some of her things, placing the photos incredibly carefully in the front pocket of the bag where are will be safe as she gets ready to head towards the stormy pack. Terrence, Levi and Arlo are going to accompany her. The whole place is buzzing with excitement. Even though the house is starting to resemble a home and they are becoming happy with their current situation, all of them were excited to join the stormy pack to live in that house. All of them want to see Lani happy again.

And all of them want Connor to know about the twins. The five-week interruption means nothing. It is just going to be a slight hiccup and everything will be set right again.

Lani sets her bag next to the others near the door. There is a large smile that cannot be wiped off her face.

The door is thrown open and Oscar walks inside, walking straight to his sister and embracing her tightly. "Oscar, my most handsome brother"

There is a round of cheers and jeers from her other brothers. They've already got a good relationship between a lot of them. Oscar isn't much different to the rest of them, even Astrid having a broken past and it makes them all grow closer. The atmosphere is jubilant and everyone is excited.

"You shouldn't have come today. I'm just about to head off to the stormy pack"

"You expect me to find out that I am going to be an uncle twice and not make the trip?"

Lani embraces him once again.

"Are you so excited??"

"As excited as I was when I found out that I have such a beautiful, smart and strong sister"

Lani laughs as she hits him on the shoulder, shaking her head, but her smile is bright.

A knock on the door sounds and Astrid opens up, seeing the doctor standing there. She ushers him straight into the house. The doctor's expression is a lot different to the other expressions in the house.

The pack house has half done walls are in desperate need of a coat of paint, but they have a few makeshift sofas and a few pieces of furniture within the rooms.

Dr. Jarvis walks straight to Leilani, speaking in a soft, slightly hesitant voice.

"I have to tell you something. Are we able to talk in private?"

Leilani suddenly has a really bad feeling. Nothing good can come out of a doctor having such an expression.

"There is no one here that I want to hide anything from"

Dr. Jarvis nods his head as he waves a hand at the couch indicating for Leilani to sit down as he stands in front of them with a thick stack of paper. The chatter has quietened down and everyone is looking anxiously at the doctor.

The doctor is unfazed by the eyes on him because, unlike Gabriel, he knows the group is civil and will not blame him for the results. Even though there is so much power within the room and every eye is fixed on him, he still holds his back straight but his eyes are slightly downcast because the last thing he wants to do is deliver this news.

"I have done a lot of reading overnight, hoping to find a different result. I have run and rerun all the tests but it has all come to the same conclusion"

Dr Jarvis looks from his hands where he is scrunching his notes so violently that the sheets can hardly stand the strain, his eyes move up to meet Leilani's like she is the only person in the room, like he is only speaking to her.

"I was scared about the result as it was, but yesterday when I found you were having twins I knew that it was worse than I could have ever imagined"

Leilani tries not to show any emotion but her heart is already breaking.

"What is it Dr Jarvis, what is wrong?"

"With the serum that was put in your body during your kidnapping and the fact that you are an alpha blood and Alpha Storm is of alpha lineage, the pure alpha twins are going to drain your already drained system. It is likely that during the process, that you will lose your life or the life of your wolf"

Lani tries to swallow but there is a boulder sitting in her throat, the same boulder is crushing her heart to pieces. Lani tries to keep a level voice, but there is an obvious shudder.

"What is likely? What is the percentage?"

"That you will lose your life? Probably eighty percent. That you will lose your wolf? Probably ninety-five percent"

Leilani buries her face in her hands as she sobs.

"I would recommend that you terminate the pregnancy. You can have another chance when you have not been affected in such a way"

Leilani can't hear anything else, only ringing in her ears, she looks hopelessly toward the door, at the bag sitting there. It was the sign of hope, it was the sign of finally getting back to him.

There is chatter around her but she can't make out words, she cannot even make out voices, she can feel hands on her but she can't feel the warmth or comfort that she would usually feel. All she can feel is the cold, the cold embrace of death that is going to catch up with her, there is no Connor, there will never be Connor again. There will be no happy family, not for her anyway, there will be no love, there will be no seeing the two grow up, there will be no seeing how great father Connor is. Suddenly, everything is crystal clear to her. Lani stands up, with a powerful aura surrounding her.

"I will not kill my babies, I will sacrifice my life for them without a single thought, it is not their fault, it is my own negligence that has led to this. Connor will never allow me to do this. I know him, he will never let me give up my life for them" Lani walks to the middle of the room to make sure that she can see everyone.

"I command you all, never to speak to Connor about my situation, location or babies, never to speak a word to me about Connor or what he is doing. No speaking, no writing it, no leaving clues, no other sneaky form of communication. Absolute blanket ban on information"

What Leilani doesn't know is that using her alpha command as an alpha of the pack, strengthened by the two alpha bloods that have taken residence in her body, she has no idea that this sentence makes it impossible for others to say a word. That a single statement allows the whole group to take an outsiders view as they watch two lovers that desperately miss each other.

Leilani doesn't know that this command is unbreakable, she thinks that she is protecting her babies, she thinks she is protecting her own heart from knowing the relationship between the fated pair.

What she doesn't know is that the others will try to break her command and set things right with no good consequence.

Lani finishes her words and walks to the door, with a straight spine and the usual confidence in her step like the news doesn't affect her, picking up her bag and walking up the stairs, walking straight into the most finished room that the boys allowed her to occupy. As soon as she moves the piece of timber she has been using as a door over the opening, the back that was so straight instantly slumps, the tears she managed to keep at bay all fall, the confident, immovable mountain crumbles to dust and flows away in a stream of hot painful tears.

She was so ready, she was ready for the future, so ready for her family, and once again she is halted in her tracks.

Leilani thinks that she is silent, but her mournful cry can be heard throughout the whole house.

Sorrow grips the whole house, embracing the house, crushing the occupants in grief. It is hard to believe that there was laughter filling the space only half an hour earlier. It is hard to believe that there will ever be laughter again. Lani rubs her stomach softly.

"Mummy is sorry, she failed you once, she won't fail you again, even if it costs me my own, I will give you yours"

She rubs a hand over her slightly raised stomach.

"I am sorry that I won't get to raise you, I am sorry I won't be able to give you that life that I dreamed of giving you. Just know that mummy loves you so very much"

A soft mournful howl starts from downstairs. One by one, they all join until every room is filled with the heartbreaking sound.
