Adilah and her mom moved in with Grammy and Aamir. Adilah did remember anything but clips came and went. Aamir was by her side every day. Adilah’s dad had died that day, she never said goodbye. They had a funeral, but she was barely present, just staring at the casket that held her father’s body.

Aamir held her hand and kissed her forehead. “I love you A,” he said. She laid her head on his shoulder. She kind of remembered their kiss. She was glad she did. Her memories came and went, and she barely retained anything. Her arms were covered in scars and she almost never smiled, always looking distant. But at least she was safe. And in Aamir’s mind, that was the best thing in the world.
