His brow furrowed as he responded sharply, “Who is this? Why are you calling me that?”

“Don’t you recognize my voice? It’s me, Melon! Is Mommy with you? I tried calling her, but she didn’t pick up.

Is she busy?” the young man on the other end of the line said.

Holden believed the voice belonged to someone in their twenties at least.

He nearly dismissed it as a prank, but something made him hesitate.

The way the young man said “Mommy” was eerily familiar.

His tone really sounded like Melon’s.

Holden’s eyes darted to Ariana instinctively.

“Why do you look so confused?” Ariana asked, not understanding what was happening.

Holden’s lips tightened.

After a moment’s hesitation, he said, “It’s Melon calling.

Joy exploded across Ariana’s pale face.

She lunged for the phone.

Holden activated the speaker and put his phone in front of Ariana.

“Baby, I’ve missed you so much.

” Ariana’s voice quavered, tears welling in her eyes.

“Where are you? Are you alright? Did Moss hurt you?”

The barrage of questions didn’t faze the caller.

A cheerful voice responded, “I’m fine, Mommy! Not hurt at all, but I don’t know where I am.

Ariana froze.

That voice…

Ariana’s expression hardened.

“Who are you really?” she demanded.

“Why are you pretending to be my son? Did Moss put you up to this?”

Melon’s voice cracked as he struggled to hold back tears, his frustration palpable over the phone.

He sobbed quietly where Ariana couldn’t see him.

“Mommy, don’t you recognize my voice? It’s me, Melon…”

Despite hearing the sorrow in Melon’s voice, Ariana remained unmoved.

She thought it was all a trick.

“What are you and Moss up to now?” Ariana’s voice was stern, her patience wearing thin.

“I want to speak to my son, Melon.

Put him on the line.

“Mommy, I’m really Melon!” Melon exclaimed.

However, Ariana’s skepticism didn’t waver.

She continued to demand for her son, ignoring Melon’s frantic pleas.

“Just give me my son, and I won’t cause any trouble for you,” Holden said to the phone.

“I am your son!” Melon’s voice broke with despair.

Then, in a sudden burst of inspiration, he said, “Mommy, remember when I tried to cook soup for you and almost set the kitchen on fire? And when you lost me at the zoo, and I was almost taken by kidnappers? Only you and I know these things.

Ariana froze, stunned.
