Wedding Day Vampire -
Chapter 74
Things went well after I moved in with Johnnie in his new home. He was right, it was a friendly neighborhood and it didn’t take long before everyone in the town knew who I was. I would sleep during the day and my Johnnie and I would make love all through the night when he returned home. We didn’t have much, but we had happiness and we had each other.
After a few months of living with him, I received a surprise visit one day from Dana.
She knocked on the door of his house and woke me up from my sleep. The door wasn’t locked and I didn’t want to go and open it for it would mean I would have contact with the sun’s rays when the door opened.
I told the visitor to come in, and I was surprised to see Dana walk through the door. I never thought she would come to visit me but boy was I glad to see her. I knew she had taken vamscren for her to have come by this time, I just wished I could get some around here, and because I didn’t have any vamscren, I could only come out of this house at night.
She and I hadn’t talked after the time I announced that I was moving out, I wondered why she came to see me.
I stood up from the bed and ran to hug her after she closed the door.
“How did you find me here?” I asked her, inviting her in and giving her a seat.
“I remembered you always talked about this town, your former hometown you left when you became a vampire, how you missed everyone here, and you told me that day that John also came from this town. All I had to do was to find a map that led me here and ask about john, it’s a small town you know so everyone knows themselves quite a lot here.”
“It sure is.”
“I came to see how you were doing, so long as you are a vampire you are still our family. It’s good to see you, and I’m glad you’re ok.”
“Thank you, it’s good to see you too, how are the others?”
“They’re ok, although we all miss you, especially Derick.”
“I’m glad everyone is ok,” I said, ignoring the part where she mentioned Derick.
Something told me that she hadn’t just come here to see how I was, that there was something else she came to tell me, and it turned out that it did.
“Marylin, I’m a bit worried about you being here. The rumors I heard about you before coming here were not good. Anybody I ask about John kept on mentioning Johns’ mysterious girlfriend who never appears during the day, some even accused you of being a witch.”
I didn’t believe her, she was probably saying those things to try to get me to change my mind and return to the castle, but it wasn’t going to work. She knew I didn’t believe her, so she then gave me some vamscren she carried in her bag and took me outside to the market place nearby.
“Listen closely,” she told me.
I listened and I picked up on a conversation from two women selling vegetables in the distance that were talking about John, the tavern worker and his girlfriend.
“Have you seen his girlfriend?” The first woman asked.
“I have, but never have I seen her under the sun. I once asked her if she needed something to do while John was away, maybe selling cabbages but she said she could only do it if it’s only at night. Market places don’t open at night so I thought she was trying to be funny, until I realized that she was actually serious.”
“Hmm, what do you think?”
“I think she’s a witch if you ask me, I know a lot of witches who are scared of the sun.”
“If that is true, then King Roland would never spare her if he found out. She’ll be burnt at the stakes if she’s a witch.”
“Oh, poor Johnnie, he would be devastated. I don’t know why he chose that girl; I mean there are other non-witchy females in this town that would have been able to satisfy him. That girl is just so strange, they say she’s from another town, no one knows where, and besides, I’ve never even seen her family.”
My heart sank as I heard about all those women were talking about, I began to read other people’s minds around that area too, and they also had the same suspicions. Dana was right.
I turned to her. Somehow, I was glad that she was here. She had always known what to do in situations like this.
“What do I do now?” I asked her desperately as we went back to Johnnie’s house.
“The first thing is that we should be glad they didn’t guess you were a vampire, else you would have been in trouble with the council.”
I thought that things were fine. I thought that the people in this town loved me, they all appeared to be so nice to me, especially the women in the market, and yet never a day did I even bother to read their minds and see what they really thought about me. Dana continued to speak to me.
“You have to be careful Marylin, if you want to keep staying here, then you have to be very careful. Now the first thing we have to do is to prove them wrong. Thank God, I brought you some vamscren, I only have a bottle left in my bag, I’ll give it to you and since you’ve already drank some, you have to go back out there and make sure that you appear in front of as many people as you can now that it’s daylight. It will keep the rumors down for a bit, but know that you won’t be able to keep this up for very long.”
She handed me the bottle of vamscren, and I couldn’t have been more grateful to her. She was a life saver.
“Thank you, Dana,” I said hugging her. That was why I loved her so, she always seemed to have a solution to every problem. I might not be able to fool the people of this town for very long, but at least let me kill the rumors for now while I think of the next step to take.
I escorted Dana out of town before going to meet those women who were gossiping about me, pretending as if I wanted to buy cabbages. The look on their faces, along with the other townsfolk, was priceless as they all saw me in broad daylight.
