What Separates Me and You -
Chapter 433 There's No Place for Me in This House
Nancy looked suspiciously at Kiran. She didn't believe that he was here just to make friends.
Nancy felt irritated and looked away. It was obvious that she didn't want to talk to Kiran.
Milo sensed the tense atmosphere, so he stood up and greeted Kiran. "I'm flattered, President Kiran. I'm not that famous."
"Please take it as a compliment. Do you have other appointments after this?" asked Kiran.
"I ... " Milo knew Kiran had something to talk to him. He briefly contemplated before replying, "I have something to attend to. Mrs. Alvarez. I shall take my leave now."
She nodded. Since she needed to find the other will, she was not in the mood to entertain any visitors.
Milo and Kiran exchanged glances. When they were about to leave, someone appeared by the door.
"Mr. Lewis," the maids greeted.
All eyes were on the door.
Lewis and Conrad strode into the house.
Kiran smiled.
Lewis approached them and asked, "Is there something special today? What's with the crowd?"
Nancy pulled a long face. The matter itself was a humiliation. Lewis' presence only added to the level of disgrace.
Nancy was the lady of the house. Yet, she had sought a lawyer because she was unhappy with how the inheritance got divided. It wouldn't do her good if words got out.
Kiran greeted, "Chairman Alvarez, you came just at the right time. We were talking about the inheritance. Although Mr. Acre has passed away, we found Mr. Waverly. I'm sure we can clear your name with his help."
Lewis turned his gaze to Milo and smiled. "Really? I didn't know you were worried about me, President Kiran. I guess I should thank you?"
"Save it. It is my honor to be of your help." Kiran nodded lightly at him. "Now that you're here, I shouldn't get in the way of your quality time with Mrs. Alvarez. Bye."
Lewis merely glanced at him. He said nothing.
Kiran did not mind his silence. He left the place with his men. As sudden as his visit was, he left as quickly.
Looking around hesitantly, Milo eventually decided to leave.
Nancy, who seemed awkward, looked at Lewis. "Lewis..."
Lewis didn't spare Nancy a glance. He passed by her and sat on the couch with his legs crossed.
Then, he stared at Nancy as if he was interrogating her.
Nancy's face went stiff. She took a seat and smiled wryly at him. "Lewis, why are you here?"
He looked at Nancy emotionlessly. "Are you trying to say there's no place for me in this house?"
"I don't mean it that way. I'm just asking why are you suddenly back home. Why didn't you inform me earlier? I could've asked the maids to prepare something."
Nancy continued, "Look at you. You're overthinking. This is your house, and I am your mother. How is there no place for you? Who amongst the family dares to defy you?"
His smile widened with hints of mockery. "Did you get your answer?"
"What?" She didn't understand.
He hinted, "The other will."
Her face lost color, but she managed to put on a smile. "What other will? That's nonsense. I invited Mr. Waverly to discuss matters concerning those illegitimate children."
Nancy pressed on. "They've been coming by multiple times in the last two days. I can't get rid of them. I've even reported it to the police twice. I'm so fed up with them."
He arched a brow. "Oh?"
"Yeah. Why would I lie to you?"
Lewis became quiet. Consequently, Nancy felt even more uneasy. Various thoughts crossed her mind. She stood up and moved to sit next to him. She spoke earnestly, "Lewis, I'm your biological mother. Others might hurt you, but I will never do that."
He lit a cigarette and observed her casually. The wisp of smoke formed a translucent wall between them.
She parted her lips, but she didn't know what to say. Hence, she asked, "How are things going with Mr. Acre's case?"
"Thanks to you guys, I have been interrogated by the police and prosecutors multiple times every single day." "You... What does it have to do with me?"
He smiled. "It is true that it has nothing to do with you. After all, all you care about right now is how much you can inherit."
She struggled to maintain a smile. "Nonsense. You're my priority. That's why I met with Mr. Waverly. I wanted to know the chances of you facing prosecution."
Nancy anxiously stared at him because she couldn't read him. On the contrary, he always seemed to have insight into her thoughts instead. After a while, he discarded the cigarette and got up. "I'm leaving."
She was taken aback and quickly stood up. "So soon?"
He stopped in his tracks and turned back to look at her. "What else? Should we call Mr. Waverly to have a talk together?"
"You..."
He ignored her and left just like that.
As soon as he got back to Styx Mansion, Mrs. Larson and Mr. Halliday greeted him, "Mr. Alvarez."
"How is she doing?"
They exchanged glances, signaling each other to speak up.
Lewis frowned at them briefly before going upstairs.
He entered the room.
Josephine was still asleep.
Lewis touched her forehead and realized that she was no longer running a temperature. He looked at the duo and asked, "Did she wake up today?"
Mrs. Larson shook her head and said, "She didn't eat anything all day. I tried to rouse her up a few times, but she kept sleeping."
Dr. Halliday added, "She threw up the medicine I fed her, but I've given her a potassium drip. She should be fine."
Lewis motioned for them to leave.
They left the room in silence, closing the door behind them.
Lewis took a seat by the bed. Pin-drop silence filled the room.
Josephine's pale complexion made her appear lifeless. He would've mistaken her for a dead body if it weren't for her heaving chest.
The sky darkened.
Lewis spent the entire night in the room.
Mrs. Larson was surprised to find him still in the room the next day. She thought he had left. He remained in the same posture as the last time she saw him.
Mrs. Larson sighed. She went up to him and said, "Mr. Alvarez, it's time for breakfast."
He did not respond, so she called out to him again. "Mr. Alvarez-"
"You may leave first," he interrupted.
Mrs. Larson was taken aback. Nheless, she did as told.
Mrs. Larson glanced at Josephine before leaving the room.
Lewis' phone had been ringing since 8:00 am., but he didn't answer.
The loud ringing made Josephine furrow her brows.
As Lewis was about to decline the call, he noticed her reaction.
His finger slowly drifted away from the red button on his phone.
