With that, she handed the paper and pen to Sam. “I’ll be going first.”
Sam could only reply with a smile, “Alright, see you later.”
“Great. Let’s go, Dr. Jefferson. The café is right across the street from where we live.” It was the same place she had gone with Sam the last time they had to discuss something.
“The coffee’s here!”
Sandy, Silas, and Bryan hurried over.
“Thank you, Dr. Jefferson! And to you too, Miranda!”
“I feel guilty making the two of you busy people run errands for us!”
Silas reached for his cup and took a big sip. “Ah, so refreshing!”
Sandy asked, “Is it really that good?”
Bryan took his and Elizabeth’s drink before thanking Paul and Miranda with a smile. Then, he eagerly brought the coffee to her.
“Lizzy, here’s your drink.”
“Oh.”
Elizabeth’s heart sank when she heard that Miranda had gone with Paul to buy coffee for everyone. She lost all interest in the drink.
Yet, Bryan continued to pester her.
“Lizzy, why aren’t you’drinking it? It’ll go cold if you wait too long. It won’t taste as good then. Here, let me cool it down for you.”
Losing her patience, Elizabeth snapped, “You’re so annoying! Can’t you stop rambling on and on? Please, just shut up!”
With that, she got up and left.
Bryan scratched his head and glanced at the untouched latte on the table. “You didn’t say you didn’t want it when I asked earlier…”
Why did she agree, only to toss it aside afterward? Wasn’t it a waste?
Bryan would probably never understand. This was the difference between them. Their gap wasn’t about education or values, but the difference in familial background and the upbringing from their families while growing up.
Elizabeth hadn’t refused the coffee because she wanted it, but simply because it was Paul who offered to treat everyone. That was all.
She walked out to the hallway to get some fresh air. Suddenly, her phone rang.

She answered, “Hello?”
“Elizabeth, I’ve found the apartment you asked me to help with!” It was her old friend, Tom Reagan. “You found it?” Elizabeth’s eyes lit up.
Tom said, “Yeah. Let me tell you, I went through so much trouble… The owners are an elderly couple who’ve lived there for most of their lives. They didn’t want to rent it out initially. I had to really persuade them.
“Coincidentally, their son is dealing with some financial Issues and urgently needs money, so they finally agreed to vacate the home. But regarding the rent…”
“Money isn’t a problem. Which unit, floor, and block is it specifically?”
“It’s on the ground floor of the third block.”
Paul lived on the seventh floor of the first block. This… couldn’t be much farther.
The light in Elizabeth’s eyes dimmed. She responded indifferently, “Is there a unit in another block?”
“This is the only one available right now. It’s an older neighborhood, so most of the homes are not up for rent. The apartment in another neighborhood that I sent you on WhatsApp also met your criteria, but I’m not sure why you refused to consider it…
“Ms. Lincoln, why don’t you just tell me which unit, floor, and block you want to rent? I’ll ask on your behalf!
”
Looking to rent an apartment wasn’t her real goal. In actual fact, she was more concerned about a certain
someone!
Elizabeth didn’t pick up on the sarcasm in Tom’s voice and thought he was being serious. She thought and said, “How about you help me look for an apartment in the first block of this neighborhood? Preferably on the fifth or sixth floor.”
She initially wanted to ask for the seventh floor, but Paul and Miranda were already living there. It wasn’t an option for her. The nearest unit would be the sixth floor.
Tom, who was a real estate agent, let out an incredulous laugh. “Fine, I’ll look into it for you!” Not a
chance!
Just as Elizabeth hung up, a voice came from behind her, “Lizzy, are you looking to rent a place?”
Elizabeth stiffened. She turned slowly and saw Bryan standing nearby, holding a latte in his hand. She didn’t know how long he had been standing there or how much he had overheard…
