When they rolled up to the estate Trey was standing outside waiting for them. Along with Reggie and of course the wonderful Jane. Trey walked up to the carriage and slowly stopped. A smile spread on his face behind his mask. Kailee was laying there asleep. While he wasn’t thrilled, she was leaning on Lance as she slept, he thought she looked adorable, so peaceful.

“You guys certainly took long enough.” Jane’s shrill voice rang out making Kailee’s eyes pop open. Trey turned and shot Jane an angry glance before he opened the door to the carriage.

Kailee stretched slightly and looked around before slowly sitting up. She bit her bottom l*p, smiling and then turned to see Trey. “I guess they are really boring riding companions.” He reached his hand out to her and she placed her hand into his. Immediately the fuzzy tingles radiated up her hand and over her body from his touch. And as he pulled her into his arms his sweet scent of cedar and honey washed over her. His warm arms wrapped around her body lifting her off her feet as he walked backwards with her.

“I can walk Trey.” She giggled out as he scooped her body up in her arms, holding her bridal style.

“Yes, but I want to hold you close.” Trey looked up to Lance and Grum as they got out of the carriage.

“Trey, we have reasons to believe the ancients have awoken.” Grum said and glanced at Kailee.

She turned her head to look at Grum. “Wait, is that a bad thing?” She was told she would need to put them back to sleep but she did not get the impression they were evil.

“Wait, why do you think that?” Trey asked mildly concerned. He watched Grum and Lance settle their gaze on Kailee.

“Well, this conversation feels like it is about to head in an uncomfortable direction. Come on Jane. I promised you a walk under the stars and look at the sky. Not a cloud blocking our view tonight.” Reggie pressed onto Jane’s back as he corralled her away, not giving her a chance to object.

Trey eased Kailee down to her feet so that he could talk to her properly. “What happened?”

“Sparks told me that the ancients have woken up…” Kailee trailed off chewing on her bottom l*p.

Trey lifted his hand to her face cupping her cheek gently in it. He took his thumb and tenderly caressed her skin. “And what does that have to do with you baby?”

She took in a slow breath and looked up to his green eyes. She knew nothing about the ancients but could tell Trey seemed leery of them. “Sparks said I would need to put them back to sleep.” She finally admitted. She didn’t want to keep a lot of secrets from him, and Sparks didn’t say this needed to be kept confidential. Besides they were mates so the two of them needed to start opening up to one another. Of course… she wasn’t sure about telling him about Bane until she knew more about that.

Trey exhaled and he squeezed his fingers together tightly. His shoulders stiffened as he tried to control his emotions. Her brown sweet eyes were looking at him and watching him tentatively. He just didn’t understand. Why was this something she had to do? Couldn’t someone else do it? Why did it have to be his precious mate?

“The ancients are a very primitive power in this world. They date back to the beginning. They have a very raw power that has very few weaknesses. And some have even said they are invulnerable to death. I’m not going to lie. This concerns me on a very deep level. I won’t…I can’t have something happen to you.” He wrapped his arms around her and breathed in her scent. He sifted his fingers through her hair as he let his fingertips trace along her back. “I want to be by your side. If for some reason it is something you have to do then I am going to stay by your side. I will always keep you safe.”

“We will be there too.” Grum said as he nodded his head to Trey.

“Remember Kailee… we are stronger together.” Lance said in a soft tone.

She smiled and nodded her head. “That’s right. We are all stronger together. So maybe remember that when you boys try to leave me out.”

“Kailee.” Grum’s voice went quiet and he waited for her to look at him. “What did you mean before that we couldn’t keep you safe? Honestly.”

Kailee felt Trey’s fingered curl into her more as the three men became very quiet.

“I can’t really talk about that yet.” Kailee said quietly.

“What is that supposed to mean?” Trey asked with a bit more edge in his voice.

“Morons.”

“I agree complete morons.”

“Brawns and no brains.”

Pyro and Dio said as they hopped up to Kailee’s side.

“She can’t talk to you about it yet. I think the meaning is fairly simple. Maybe try smaller words and enunciate next time, sweetheart.” Dio smirked as Grant and Koma also walked up.

“Will you two quit instigating? You act like they can’t kill you in a second if they wanted.” Grant shook his head. “Sorry about them. They don’t have brawn or brain.”

“Hey!”

“Hey!”

Pyro and Dio shouted in unison.

“It isn’t that Kailee doesn’t plan to talk about everything. It is that she doesn’t know what to talk about. Once she meets with Alistair, she will understand everything.” Koma said with a smile.

“Kailee… I will always keep you safe. I don’t care whatever anyone says. As far as I am concerned you come before everything else. Nothing is more important to me than you.” Trey didn’t care what was going on. He would be there to protect her. Nothing was more important than her. And if it was dangerous, he would risk his life in order to keep her safe.

Kailee smiled up at the golden mask as she looked at his green eyes. “Nothing is more important to me than you.”

“I feel like we are interrupting a moment.” Grum said as he cleared his throat.

Kailee looked down at her little gnome stewards. “Sparks mentioned to me that the ancients have woken up and that I would need to put them back to sleep? How do I do that?”

“Umm that is something that falls under the conversation with Alistair since it has to deal with who you are.” Grant said apologetically. It wasn’t that they didn’t want to tell her but Alistair wanted to explain everything to her himself. He shuffled his feet a bit feeling guilty that he wasn’t explaining it to her.

“That’s okay Grant. I guess I will find out soon enough. Trey is going to take me soon.” Kailee said with a smile.

“Wait. You are taking him with you?” Pyro asked with wide eyes.

Kailee chuckled. “Why wouldn’t I? He is my husband and my mate.”

“I just didn’t think that he would willingly take you there is all.” Pyro shrugged and looked up at Trey. He was having a new appreciation for him at that moment.

“I don’t mind taking her anywhere as long as she isn’t in danger and I get to bring her back.” Trey said and then glanced upwards. “It is starting to get late and this mask is a bit stuffy. Let’s go to bed.”

Kailee smiled and nodded up at him. “That sounds good to me.”

“Yes we have a late night ahead of us tomorrow with the party so we all better sleep well now.” Lance said as he reached his arms above his head.

“Reggie is still out there walking around. Let’s hope he gets lucky tonight.” Grum chuckled.

“Good night.” Koma said, looking up at Kailee. “We will be around.”

Kailee was going to bid them a good night as well but the four of them vanished. “They always come and go so quickly.”

“I don’t mind them coming and going but I think we need to set up a boundary with them.” Trey said, pulling Kailee into his body.

“A boundary?” She leaned her head against his chest as she listened to his heartbeat and greedily enjoyed his scent.

“Yes. I don’t need them popping into our room. It should always be off limits.” Trey’s voice turned a bit husky as his fingertips trailed over her skin. “Tomorrow night I’m marking you as my mate.”

“Yeah, I’ll be sleeping somewhere else tomorrow night then.” Grum said with a chuckle while Lance nodded his head. “My hearing is too good and those events usually last the night.”

“How do you mark me?” Kailee asked.

“I’m out.” Lance said quickly.

“Me too.” Grum said as they both marched quickly through the door.

“Let’s talk about this inside.” Trey said. “I’m dying to taste your lips again.” His voice was a low whisper as he lifted her body up.

“Trey.” Kailee giggled. “Let me go.” She didn’t really mean it because at the same time she wrapped her hands around his neck as she continued to laugh.

“Never. I am never going to let you go.” Trey smiled behind his mask as he carried her inside.

“Don’t think that I don’t know what you are doing Reg.” Jane said as she pulled away from the warm arm around her.

Reggie scoffed. “Don’t think you can act like you don’t want me. I can see it in your eyes. You want it. I want it. So why deny it?”

Jane rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Being with you doesn’t matter, that’s why.”

Reggie tilted his head and gave her a crooked smile. “I know you haven’t remained pure for him as you waited. He has someone warming his bed right now. So why not warm each other’s?”

“I didn’t come all this way to give up without having a chance.” Jane snuffed out bitterly.

Reggie straightened up as his face hardened. “You already don’t have a chance. She is his wife and his mate. And I will go down swinging declaring she is his wife. There is no way to get around that. You can’t have him. You can’t have his title. But you can have some fun with me. We can have a fun night. Then you can go and be with who you really want to be with.”

Jane snapped her head to Reggie and set her jaw. “You’ve had me followed?!”

Reggie laughed mockingly. “Ha! Who needs to follow you? You frequented the same establishments I have. And there is only one reason to go there. But you always ended up leaving with the same guy. While me…” He smirked with a shrug. “It didn’t matter who wanted to follow me home. But for you it did… So why not? Why not go to who you really want?”

“You wouldn’t understand. How could you possibly understand? I want to go back in. It’s getting chilly.” Jane said bitterly.

“That warm bed and fun night is still on the table… speaking of on the table I have one in my room.” Reggie grinned. “Would you like to accompany me back to my room?”

“My room.” Jane said coldly.

“Your room works too. I’m not picky.” Reggie laughed as she started walking off away from him. He jogged up next to her and wrapped his arm around her. “Okay, I’ll just walk you back. But think about it… that’s all.”
