Winning Back His Ex's Wife's Broken Heart -
Chapter 59
Sarah's
POV
The air between us still felt charged as Richard and I said goodnight that evening. I had pecked him on the cheeks.
Thinking about it made my cheeks turn red, It was as if we were high school crushes. But the next day, I knew I had to keep things light-too much, too soon would be overwhelming. So, I texted Zoe and a couple of other friends about a game night. As soon as the idea popped into my head, it felt perfect. I could already imagine Richard's reaction. The late afternoon rolled around, and I set out snacks and grabbed a stack of board games and cards, feeling a strange excitement to see how he'd handle the night. When he knocked on the door, I opened it to find him standing there, looking a little out of his element.
"Game night?" he asked, glancing inside with a slightly raised eyebrow.
"Game night!" I replied, waving him in.
"Wait... what kind of games?"
"Not the Monopoly type, if that's what you're worried about," I teased, closing the door behind him. "More like charades and maybe some Pictionary."
He let out a relieved sigh, giving me a grin. "Good, because I still haven't recovered from the last time I played Monopoly. I think I'm banned from then house."
Just then, Zoe and Matt walked in, bringing laughter with them. After the introductions, we settled on the couches, starting off with a safe choice-charades.
I couldn't help but feel a bit mischievous, imagining Richard doing something as silly as acting out "dancing giraffe" or "superhero stuck in traffic."
I handed Richard his first charades card, and his face twisted in shock. "You're kidding me," he said, shooting me a look that was part-amused, part-exasperated. "Is this even possible?" "You're up for the challenge," I said with a smirk. "Or are you giving up already?"
He narrowed his eyes playfully and stepped into the middle of the room, taking a deep breath.
I leaned forward, not wanting to miss a second of this. Slowly, Richard raised one hand as if he were conducting an invisible orchestra, looking around dramatically. "An orchestra!" Zoe yelled.
Richard shook his head, giving us a look that clearly said, *Really?* He hunched his shoulders, making exaggerated, stiff movements.
Then, he suddenly started bending his knees and tilting his head as if peering over a ledge. He paused, then jumped back in fake terror, flailing his arms.
Matt slapped his hand on his leg. "A spy on a mission?"
"Close!" Richard mouthed, smiling as he kept his act going. He ducked down, peeking around an imaginary corner, then froze, as if caught by a spotlight. "A... a spy in trouble?" Zoe guessed, laughing.
I squinted, trying to piece it together, until something clicked. "Oh! Are you a... secret agent escaping from a laser trap?"
Richard nodded excitedly, motioning for me to keep going. "Trying to steal something!" I shouted.
He stopped, letting out a mock sigh of relief. "Thank you!" He slumped onto the couch, wiping pretend sweat off his brow. "That was way harder than it looked."
We all burst out laughing, and even Richard had to join in. Seeing him relaxed and comfortable, part of this silly game, was refreshing.
It was like discovering a new piece of him, one I hadn't seen before-a Richard who was playful, who could laugh at himself, who wasn't just the serious and cold man I'd married.
When it was my turn, I drew a card that read rockstar, and I figured I'd go all in. Without hesitation, I grabbed a hairbrush from the coffee table, using it as a makeshift microphone, and belted out a few notes-intentionally out of tune. I closed my eyes and gave it my best "rockstar face," fully leaning into the role. When I opened my eyes, Richard was grinning, clapping along with everyone else.
"A karaoke superstar!" he guessed, leaning forward with a smile that felt warmer than I remembered.
"Close enough," I replied, sitting back down. My heart was racing from the ridiculous performance, but I could feel a lightness between us, a closeness that hadn't been there before.
The night continued, filled with rounds of laughter, teasing, and friendly competition. By the time we wrapped up, I felt like I'd spent the evening with a different version of Richard, a more open, joyful one.
When Zoe and Matt left, Richard stayed behind, hands in his pockets as he stood by the door.
"Tonight was... surprisingly fun," he admitted, a little sheepishly. "I can't remember the last time I laughed like that."
"Maybe you just needed a little push," I teased, leaning against the doorframe. "Who knew Mr. Serious could actually be a lot of fun?"
He laughed, shaking his head. "I think that's thanks to you. You have a way of bringing out the parts of me I'd forgotten were there." There was a softness in his eyes that caught me off guard. A part of me wanted to step closer, to reach out, but I hesitated, unsure.
I still wasn't certain if I was ready for what I said I was, and he seemed to sense that.
"Well, I'm glad you enjoyed it," I replied quietly.
He nodded, giving me a small smile. "I did. And... I hope we can keep doing this. Just... having fun, like tonight."
I nodded, feeling a warmth in my chest that I hadn't felt in a long time. "Me too, Richard. Me too."
I sat on my bed thinking about everything, and I couldn't help but feel that I was making the right decision.
We were rediscovering ourselves, it felt really nice, I thought about everything that had happened.
From the divorce to him coming back, to the villains in our love story-or story- Williams and Susan, to my giving him a chance. Whew! That was a lot. I just hoped I wouldn't regret this decision of mine.
Because if it did, I didn't know if I would recover.
