Chapter 76

Ally’s subsequent words shocked Calla to the core. “Mr. Garland really cares about you. When the workers called him, he immediately phoned me and asked me to head over to the hospital.

“He also took the earliest flight back to Riverford and sat by your bed throughout the night. He didn’t even take a sip of water.”

Calla couldn’t close her mouth that had fallen open in surprise. She stared at Ally while asking in disbelief, “What?”

Now that she’d thought about it, Mercer’s eyes were indeed rather reddish. When she looked outside, she realized that the sun had already risen. This meant that she’d slept for a day and a half.

Ally’s eyes gleamed in admiration as she gushed, “You have no idea how nervous Mr. Garland was while you were being examined. It was the first time I’ve ever seen him so frazzled.”

Calla appeared to have morphed into a teenage girl as she puckered her lips and complained, “Since he was so worried about me, why did he scold me so fiercely when I woke up?”

Calla now seemed nothing like the capable woman she used to be at work.

Ally smiled and said, “It’s clearly borne out of love and concern for you. He cares too much about you and couldn’t help but scold you for it.”

When she heard that, Calla immediately yanked herself back into reality.

Ally was Mercer’s secretary. Of course she’d speak up for him. She had probably twisted the facts to suit her agenda. Still, Calla was in a good mood today. She pulled. the blanket up to her chin, sporting a grin on her face.

Calla lay in the hospital for three days before Mercer asked Ally to get her discharged. Calla felt like her muscles had turned into mush. This was the longest she’d ever laid in bed.

On the day she was discharged, Mercer came over to pick her up himself. He walked out of the hospital room with Calla by his side. Simon followed behind them while carrying Calla’s belongings.

Calla glanced at Mercer and whined, “You’re here to pick me up from the hospital. Can’t you wear something more colorful? You look like a crow every day.”

Mercer looked down at his black suit and replied stiffly, “I’ve never worn any other than black and white since I was in middle school.”

Calla blurted, “Can’t you just try even if you’ve never worn it before?”

Mercer stated, “I’ve gotten used to it.”

She tried to convince him otherwise by asking, “Why are you so stubborn? How would

know how it looks if you never tried it?”

Mercer’s expression soured immediately. He ordered, “Don’t try to change me. This is meaningless.

After he spoke, he got into the car in a huff.

Calla was rather angry herself. Hadn’t she only suggested that he try clothes of other colors? Did he need to behave like that? She’d made use of the days he was away to buy him clothes that weren’t black or white.

It looked like the money she’d spent had gone to waste. However, it wasn’t too much of a pity. After all, she’d paid with his card. She’d lost nothing!

Simon opened the door for Calla. After she got in and saw Mercer’s icy expression, resolutely ignored him. No one said anything until they reached home.

When they entered, a neatly dressed middle–aged woman of around 50 years of age walked over.

She smiled and said, “Ms. Sherman, Mr. Garland, you’re back. Lunch has been prepared, All the dishes are your favorites, Mr. Garland. Of course, we prepared some of your favorites too, Ms. Sherman.”

Calla scanned the woman in front of her and was sure that she’d never seen her before. Afterward, she looked at Mercer suspiciously

However, he didn’t offer her an explanation. Instead, he changed his shoes while saying, “Get ready for lunch. I have things to do in the afternoon.”
