Calla finally realized how considerate Mercer was being.

The resort was on the outskirts of Sedonia, and it would take them three hours on the highway before reaching Riverford.

Mercer had seen how tired she was, which was why he had chosen to spend a night here. He hadn’t asked her to stay at Garland Mansion because he didn’t want her to feel awkward around his parents.

He was being considerate of her in all aspects.

Calla felt unusually happy as she lay on the huge, soft bed. She closed her eyes and continued sleeping contentedly.

When they returned to Riverford, Calla and Mercer’s relationship became even more relaxed and natural. Calla would take care of his daily needs, and he would regularly take her for prenatal checkups.

They would sit in front of the television, talking and laughing with each other, just like any other husband and wife.

One afternoon, after Mercer had gone to work, Calla went to the mall and bought a whole bunch of things to bring home to Carol and Zoey.

The moment she entered, Calla called out as she changed into indoor slippers, “Mom, I’m back!”

She walked into the living room and saw Rudy sitting on the couch with Carol in front of him. They both had rather unnatural expressions on their faces.

Calla was furious to see Rudy, and she coldly asked, “What are you doing here?”

“Why are you talking to your father like that?” Carol quickly went up to her to take the things she was carrying. She nudged Calla gently, indicating for her not to cross the line.

Rudy wasn’t as aggressive as he usually was. He stood up rather awkwardly and rubbed his hands. together as he smiled and said, “Calla, I’m here to see you and Zoey.”

Calla threw her head back in mocking laughter. She glared at him and said, “We’ve been living here for more than ten years, and you’ve never even come to take a peek at us. Is this some kind of joke? What are you up to this time?”

“You… how could you speak to me like this? I… I’m not that kind of person. I just came to see the three of you out of concern.” Perhaps Calla had seen right through him because Rudy looked very uncomfortable. He was usually completely shameless.

*Let me tell you something. Mom, Zoey, and I don’t need your concern. Things are going well for us now, so go away and take care of your own family,” Calla said harshly.

“Calla, would it kill you to stop talking? Rudy, perhaps you’d better leave,” Carol said imploringly to both of them.

Rudy had no choice. He nodded and said, “I’ll come another day.”

“Ignore her, she’s just angry right now,” Carol explained as she walked with him to the door.

Calla was infuriated by Carol’s attitude toward Rudy.

Once Carol had returned from seeing Rudy off, Calla could no longer hold back.

“Mom, why are you pandering so much to him? You’ve been divorced for so many years! It’s impossible

for the two of you, don’t you know that? Do you think he still has feelings for you? I know him too well. He must have come because he thinks you’re still useful to him in some way.”

“Calla, you’re so smart! You guessed everything correctly!” Zoey suddenly walked out of her room.

“What’s going on?” Calla looked suspiciously at Zoey.
