A Dish Best Served Cold (The Man In Rage)
Chapter 1141 He Deserved to Die

"You must be Mr Chu, the man who killed my grandson and caused such a commotion in Jiangdong. I can't believe you managed to force an entire army to submit to you. You're quite something, aren't you, Mr Chu?"

This was the first time Lu Cang-Qiong had met Ye Fan in person.

However, sometimes, you simply needed one look to discern someone's identity. The gestures they made and the aura that they exuded within that moment was all one needed.

The young man who stood before him was quiet and composed, and exuded power and confidence. Who else could he be besides being the man called Mr Chu, and the one who had killed his grandson?

A single glance at Ye Fan had been all Lu Cang-Qiong needed to conclude that the man before him was Mr Chu.

"I didn't expect it to be you," said He Lan-Shan when he heard what Lu Cang-Qiong had said. He frowned and eyed Ye Fan.

He Lan-Shan had not met Ye Fan in person before but he had heard of the leader of the Jiangdong people.

When Ye Fan had hosted the Feast of the Sea and Sky, he had gotten someone to deliver a bottle of wine to Ye Fan as a gift.

"You accepted my gift, so I thought that meant you would know your place and not cause any trouble for Jiangdong. It seems that I had thought too highly of you.

Ruffians will never stop being ruffians. You can give a gangster status and power, but he's not going to change his brutish ways."

The look that He Shan-Lan gave Ye Fan as he shook his head was as cold as the words that he had just uttered.

"I would have looked the other way if this had been a mere misdemeanor. The Jiangdong provincial government is willing to respect your authority and status as the leader of the people. But you don't seem to know your place at all."

"You incurred the wrath of a powerful family in Yanjing and killed Old Master Lu's grandson. There's no way that I can spare you after you've committed such a hideous crime. You have only yourself and your arrogance to blame for what's going to befall you next," barked He Lan-Shan furiously before he turned towards Han Dong-Min and hollered, "Han Dong-Ming, why are you standing there and doing nothing? Gather the police forces in Yunzhou and arrest this man. I want him punished. I'm not going to let ruffians and gangsters run wild in my streets."

He Lan-Shan immediately instructed Han Dong-Min to arrest Ye Fan as soon as he realized that the latter was the murderer.

Han Dong-Min's face had gone pale. There was a torn look in his eyes as he simply stood there.

"Why aren't you taking any action? Did you not hear what I just told you?" Impatience colored He Lan-Shan's voice.

"Secretary He, Mr Chu is a general. He is beyond our jurisdiction. Only the military may arrest him," said Han Dong-Min as he desperately tried to find an excuse for his inaction.

He dared not touch a single hair on Ye Fan.

Han Dong-Min had had multiple encounters with Ye Fan and he knew how terrifying the young man could be.

The young man was not as simple as he appeared to be. Han Dong-Min was convinced that he hid great power and a vast network of connections.

He dared not offend this man.

He didn't want to die young.

In spite of He Lan-Shan's explicit orders, Han Dong-Min tried hard to find an excuse to delay the arrest.

"What? A general? Are you saying that he's a general?" He Lan-Shan was clearly shocked by what Han Dong-Min had just said. He couldn't believe that such a young man was a general of their Chinese military.

"How did you find out? I've not heard of such a young general in our army," retorted He Lan-Shan.

"Just now, sir," reported Han Dong-Min dutifully. "Mr Chu said so himself. The respect that those soldiers treated him with seems to prove that he was speaking the truth."

He Lan-Shan hesitated then.

The military lay beyond the jurisdiction of the secular government. They had military courts to deal with soldiers who had broken the law. Han Dong-Min and the rest of his fellow colleagues did not have the authority to arrest or prosecute a soldier.

"A general? That's bullshit! Ye Fan's only in his twenties. We barely know of men his age being made generals during wartime. It's impossible that the military would confer him the position of a general during peacetime."

"He must have been lying. We don't have to listen to anything that he says. Just send someone to arrest him. Even if he were speaking the truth, we can simply pretend that we knew nothing when the military demands an explanation from us and have him transferred to the military's custody. He's going to have to face trial in the military court then anyway," suggested Wu Wei-Tao.

He Lan-Shan nodded in agreement. "We'll do that then. Han Dong-Min, I don't care if he's a real general or impersonating one. Have him arrested right now."

"But..." Han Dong-Min appeared reluctant. "Secretary He, in my opinion, we shouldn't try to blow things out of proportion. We're still in the middle of the investigation and have no idea what truly happened. Based on what we've found out, the young masters of the Lu and Xur families had openly provoked Mr Chu and tried to harm him and his loved ones. Mr Chu had killed them in the name of self-defense. Mr Chu might not have done anything wrong, so it's going to reflect badly on us if we arrest the wrong man. We might be inviting trouble in the future."

Han Dong-Min finally blurted out his true thoughts.

His fear of Ye Fan wasn't the only reason why he hadn't wished to incur the young man's wrath. He was also on Ye Fan's side.

He didn't think that Ye Fan had done anything wrong.

His investigation over the past few days had shown that Lu Ming-Feng and Xu Shao-Hua had resorted to numerous unscrupulous and illegal means to claim various assets that had belonged to other people. They had trespassed into private residential property and had attempted to kidnap and confine Mr Chu's family.

They had been responsible for the explosion on Mount Yunding. He had found that act of destruction unforgivable. These young men had abused their power, deployed destructive weapons and destroyed Mr Chu's residence. They should be shot for what they had done.

Mr Chu had killed them in the name of self-defense. In killing them, he had also helped to rid their country of two pests.

He was convinced that Mr Chu had done the right thing in killing them.

Of course, he dared not share those thoughts with Old Master Lu in their presence.

But he had been forced into a corner. Left with no other choice, he could only try to persuade He Lan-Shan to consider his decision this way.

"Are you saying that my grandson deserved to die and that he had it coming?" thundered Old Master Lu finally after a long moment of silence. The look in his eyes was as cold as ice.
