I couldn't believe she had just left. We discovered that her powers are darker than what meets the eye. I'm starting to think it wasn't Nyx who had this plan; maybe she planned to give Kamala the power to use it for good and not drain her of her wolf and life. But maybe whatever dark magic Petra used was what took that light magic from Kamala and started to fill her with its dark magic.

I feared that when she arrived and used those powers to stop the battle, it was going to do worse than good.

I couldn't just stand around and watch my friend and everyone I know, and love meet a fatal end. I had to somehow stop it from happening; I told her I was going to let her go alone. I made a promise that I would stay behind and get some rest, get Mateo in the morning, and wait around for Kamala to send me word. But I couldn't just do that; I had to go back to Mooncrest to help them.

But first, I couldn't just leave here without seeing my son. This might be the last time I see him, and I needed him to know how much I truly loved him.

As I made my way to Reece's house; I thought about the letter I found from my birth mother. I didn't want to believe it when Marlon told me I was a duchess. I couldn't even imagine being a duchess. Me? That made no sense to me and I didn't want anything to do with that duke's castle.

Especially conserving Frederick was after me and wanted me dead. I didn't realize he's been wanting me dead since the moment I was born. I had no idea he was actually my half-brother and he's had it out for me my entire life.

He was so afraid that I was going to figure out who I truly was and come for his throne. I felt sick just thinking about it. Even if I did want that, it wouldn't have been possible for me. I was nothing but a dirtball; a dark-furred wolf that was destined to become a slave. I would have never made it to North-Valley alive.

I understand why Frederick kept all of this from me and everyone else by erasing records, but my adoptive mother knew the truth. I'm assuming my father probably knew the truth too. Neither of them had said anything to me about it. I couldn't believe they would lie to me for so long.

Reading the letter, it almost seemed as though Elianna knew I would be taken away from them soon. She was warning them not to let them take me to the slave farm. But how could she have known that that's what was going to happen?

I stopped in front of Reece's door to her house and knocked gently. It only took a few moments for Reece to answer. She looked surprised at first that I was at the door but then she smiled pleasantly.

"Deonna," she said, stepping aside for me to enter. "I wasn't expecting you here tonight. Mateo's sleeping but I'm sure he'll be happy to leave with you."

I shook my head slowly, trying to keep the sadness out of my eyes.

"I'm actually not here to take him with me," I told her. She frowned and cocked her head to the side. "I just wanted to see him for a minute and tell him I love him."

"I don't understand," she said, analyzing my face. "Where are you going now?"

"I came here originally because I was going to come to get him in the morning. But something came up tonight and I need to leave again. I'm not sure for how long," I explained.

Her frown deepened.

"Would you be able to watch him for a little longer?" I asked.

She sighed and shook her head in disbelief.

"I didn't think it was going to be this long," she said, folding her arms across her chest.

"I wouldn't ask if it wasn't necessary," I told her.

"You know, we have our own lives too. It's not fair that you came here and disrupted that with your son," Reece nearly spat; I flinched at her words. I knew she never liked me, and she was only doing this as a favor to my deceased parents. I was just hoping I could use her aid for a little longer.

"I understand," I said softly. "If you can't, I'll bring him with me. But where I'm going is dangerous and I fear for his life. I fear for all of our lives."

"What does that mean?" Reece asked, folding her arms across her chest.

I wasn't sure how much I could tell her and how much I should tell her. I wanted to keep it short and simple, but I also wanted her to see how serious things were.

"Somethings going to happen tonight that could either save us all or kill us all. If I don't get there soon to stop it, I fear the worst will happen," I explained. Her eyes widened.

"You're being extremely vague," Reece said, eyeing me carefully.

"I'm sorry to put fear into you. But my parent's trusted you, which makes me trust you. I wouldn't be asking if it wasn't an emergency," I told her.

She sighed and lowed her head as the thought of my parents went through her mind.

"Okay," she finally said after a breath of silence. "But if you die and no one comes for him, he's going to an orphanage."

I flinched at the word "orphanage" as I briefly remembered stories about when I was in the orphanage. It wasn't something I ever wanted to subject my children to. I rubbed my tummy gently, gesturing for my unborn child. "Dying isn't on my agenda," I told her.

She rolled her eyes and motioned me towards the back room where they kept Mateo.

He was sleeping in a small bed; he had his stuffed wolf tucked next to him. He was getting so big and my heart tugged knowing I couldn't stay with him. I missed him so much.

I rubbed his soft hair out of his eyes, and he stirred gently in his sleep. His eyes opened and his long lashes batted as they adjusted to the dimmed lighting of his room. His eyes widened when he saw me and sat up. "Mommy!" he nearly shouted, wrapping his small arms around me.

"I sweetheart," I whispered, tears flooding my eyes. "I missed you so much."

"Missed you," he whispered in return.

I just came to tell you how much I loved you. I want you to be good for auntie Reece and uncle Adam," I said holding him close.

He stared up at me.

"Where's daddy?" He asked sadness in his voice.

"Daddies at home," I answered.

"I want to go home," he cried.

I held him tighter.

"I know, baby. Soon. I promise."

I kissed the top of his head.

"Until then, I need you to stay here a little longer and I'll be back for you, okay?"

He nodded slowly.

I looked over at the door to make sure Reece wasn't nearby.

"Are they treating you okay here?" I asked.

He shrugged.

"Yeah," he answered.

I smiled, relieved to hear that. I kissed him gently.

"I love you," I whispered.

"Love you too."
