Alpha’s Black Furred Slave Mate -
Chapter 60
Marlon watched as Deonna went towards the woods; he had already told the guards to let her go. He wasn't sure what else to do; as soon as others around the kingdom saw her, they would know she wasn't a prisoner and that he let her go. That would confirm the rumor of the relationship between them.
But he didn't care; Deonna was right when she said that she needed to protect Mateo. He wanted to protect Mateo as well; he would never deny Deonna the opportunity to protect her son. He just wished he could be there to protect Deonna, but he needed to be prepared for when the duke arrived with his army. His army was getting ready for battle, but he was afraid it wasn't going to be enough.
He needed an alternate plan, and he think he knew exactly what he needed to do.
But first, there was something he needed to take care of. He trusted his maids and the help around the manor; he didn't think the ones he currently had would betray him. Beatrice had been his head maid for generations and even though Petra was a flirt, and new, he still trusted her to do her job and nothing more. But they both betrayed his trust; Petra betrayed him by attempting to kill Deonna. Not to mention drugging them both. Beatrice betrayed him by knowing about the whole ordeal.
He wasn't sure what he was going to do about Beatrice, but he knew Petra couldn't live. He had to end her life and he wasn't going to wait around to do that.
He made his way towards the slave shack, where Bob mentioned he locked her inside. She must be going crazy in the slave shack; the thought filled Marlon with satisfaction. He wanted her to be miserable; he wanted her to be as miserable as she could be. What she did to Deonna was disgusting and she wasn't going to live another day.
He stormed into the slave shack and looked around wildly.
He peered into a couple of cells they kept in that shack; he frowned as he realized it was empty. Panic began rising around him; he thought at first that Bob got the shack wrong. Even though it was unlikely he got the shack wrong; he knew of the shacks very well considering he was the one who brought the slaves here most of the time.
As he looked in the cells, he noticed on one of the hay beds was a small golden cufflink and a couple of chains that looked big enough for arms and legs.
Marlon's heart sunk deep into his stomach.
They must have belonged to Petra. Somebody set Petra free, and he feared he knew exactly who it was. He just hoped that he was wrong.
"Bob?" Marlon hissed through his link.
Bob came through almost right away.
"I'm almost on their tail. I can smell Alex's scent getting stronger," he said; even his linked voice was out of breath as he ran.
"Petra escaped," Marlon informed his son.
There was a pause on Bob's side of the link as he processed that new information.
"What?" Bob asked, trying to figure out if he heard that correctly.
"Petra is gone," Marlon said even louder as he began pacing the slave shack.
"How is that possible?" Bob asked. "I had her chained..."
"I know," Marlon told him. "I think Alex came through. He must have broken into my study and taken the cufflink key when we were distracted. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but I think he set her free." "Do you think she went back to finish the job on Deonna?" Bob asked.
Marlon hesitated as he remembered that Deonna wasn't here.
"Deonna isn't here," Marlon told him.
Bob paused again.
"What do you mean? Where is she?" Bob asked.
"I set her free. She's on her way to Mateo," Marlon answered.
"What?!" Bob yelled through the link. "She's here??"
"Yes," Marlon confirmed. "If anything, Petra will probably be heading here as well."
There was an even longer pause on Bob's end before he said anything.
"Oh my god," Bob said. "I can smell her."
"Who?" Marlon urged.
"Both of them... all of them. I'm near the creek. I can smell them all," Bob said, panicking.
"Go!!" Marlon ordered. "I have something else I need to take care of but make sure they don't touch Deonna or Mateo."
"Yes, father," Bob answered as he disconnected the link.
Now it was Marlon's turn to transform into his wolf form; he leaped through his manor grounds and out the front gates. He ordered his guards to inform him of any breeches while he was gone. He fled through his village.
He knew what he needed to do, but it wasn't going to be easy.
As he continued running, he picked up speed; the world around him began freezing in place as he picked up more speed. He was one of the fastest wolves in most of the land. That was one of the reasons why he ranked so high in the noble ranking. It was also something he took some serious pride in.
He reached the slave farm within minutes; typically, by carriage, it would have taken longer than a day to get there. But that was nothing for Marlon when he was in his wolf form. The slave farm was kept secured by bobbed wires and a couple of guard towers. Everyone in the kingdoms knew him as a high-ranked nobleman and close to the king himself. They respected him almost as much as they respected the king. He knew it would be easy to get in and out of the slave farm.
He lurked around the borders for a little while, but before he could approach the guards, he sensed another presence nearby.
In the corner of his eyes, he saw a movement in one of the nearby bushes. He approached the bush and came across a dark-furred wolf. She looked injured; she was thin, but she had fierce anger in her eyes that took him back.
She was breathing heavily, and she was obviously terrified to see him standing there; she knew right away that he was a nobleman.
Marlon turned into his human self and stared down at the young wolf. She knelt beside her to look at her injured paw; she recoiled instantly; there were bite marks on her arm.
"It's okay," he told her gently. "I'm not going to hurt you."
She stared at him with wide eyes; she still obviously didn't trust him, but she turned into her human form. She was holding onto her arm which was bleeding by her shoulder blade. Her face was riddled in sweat; her short dark hair was covering her features. Her dark eyes were wide with terror.
Though it appeared she had this ambition in her that reminded him a lot of Deonna.
He ripped off a piece of his shirt and began wrapping the wound on her shoulder. She stared at him with dismay, confused as to why a nobleman was helping her.
They stayed silent as he tended to her wound.
Once he was finished, she gave him a weak smile of gratitude.
"What is your name?" He asked her, trying to keep his voice low to not alert the guards.
She was hesitant to respond but eventually, she spoke.
"Kamala, "she whispered.
"What happened to you?" He asked.
She blinked a few times in his direction; still wary of his kindness.
"I was attacked a few miles back. They left me to die," she explained; her voice was raspy but she kept him in a whisper so no one would hear them. "I've been staking out around here for a while now. Trying to figure out how to break in." Maron frowned. It was weird that a dark-furred wolf wanted to break into the slave farm; usually, it's the other way around.
"I'm usually more careful. But my injury caused me to be careless in getting caught," she added sheepishly, looking at her wound.
She stared back at him with questions in her eyes.
"I'm sorry that happened to you," he said to her in return.
"Why are you being kind of me?" She asked. "You are obviously a noble."
"Let's just say, I've had a change of heart."
She frowned; she didn't seem to buy it but he didn't care. He needed to get into that farm and free the slaves. He stood up to head back towards the guard tower.
"Wait..." she said, scrambling to her feet; she stayed in the forest so she wouldn't be seen.
He turned to face her.
"Are you going to tell them I'm here?" She asked.
He cocked his head to the side.
"Did you want me to?" He asked in return.
Her eyes widened and she shook her head slowly.
"Your secret is safe with me."
She gave him another weak smile of gratitude.
"Why are you here?" She asked him before he could walk away again.
"I'm going to free the slaves," he announced to her. Her mouth dropped open in awe. He gave her a sideways smile before adding, "Want to help?"
