Alpha’s Black Furred Slave Mate -
Chapter 82
"We are going back to the village?" Kamala asked in a gasp; her eyes were large and alert as I explained to her what the plan was.
I was wrapping Mateo in his blanket as I spoke to her; I knew she was apprehensive about leaving by the look she was giving me. I was worried about leaving as well, but we didn't have many more options. Alex and Petra were on their way to the manor and their goal is to get to Mateo and me. I couldn't take that risk; Marlon didn't want to take that risk.
As much as it pained me to leave, I knew it was the best thing for us.
"We have to," I told her. "We need to protect ourselves."
"But what about everyone else? If Alex and Petra are after us..." Kamala tried to argue, but I shook my head quickly.
"They are after Mateo and me. They don't even know you exist," I assured her.
A small crease appeared above her forehead as she allowed my words to process. I wasn't meaning to offend her.
"Once they know I exist, they will be after me too," she told me, folding her arms across her chest. "They are after us, Deonna. Can we really just leave while everyone else fights our battles?"
Kamala was always strong-minded, and she didn't mind putting in a good fight when she was able. I knew she didn't mind the idea of fighting and she hated when others fight her battle for her. But this wasn't her battle to fight and I needed her to understand that. "This isn't a fight you need to be in," I told her.
She rolled her eyes.
"You are my friend, Deonna. Any fight that involves you is my fight," she argued.
That was sweet of her to say and I appreciated what she was trying to do and say, but I really didn't want her to fight in this battle. We've gone through so much in our lifetime and it was time for us to sit one out. Our whole lives have been nothing but a battle. We battled daily to survive; all dark-furred wolves fought to survive for so long and it was time that we had a break for once. Let the nobles and the royals fight a battle. I wanted to sit this one out. I needed to think about Mateo and what he needed. I couldn't risk his life because of my ego and willpower to fight.
Marlon had ordered us to leave the kingdom and I needed to listen to him. I trusted his judgment more now than I ever did before. I no longer believed he was the bad guy; he was the father of my son and I knew he only wanted what was best for us. I couldn't stick around here with danger approaching. I needed Kamala to understand that as well.
"Kamala..." I tried to say to her, but she shook her head slowly.
She didn't look convinced, but she also didn't argue anymore. She just no longer wished to discuss it. I wasn't sure what was on her mind or what it was she wanted to do. But she helped me finish wrapping Mateo up in his blanket and getting some of his things together.
It's not like he had a lot of stuff, but there were some belongings he would miss if we didn't bring them.
I started heading towards the door and Kamala stood in her track, she stared around the room looking unsure.
"What about Bob?" She asked after I turned back to her.
I frowned, unsure of what she was asking.
"Do we say goodbye to him?" She asked.
I sighed; I knew something was going on between the two of them, regardless of if she wanted to admit it or not. For a while, I was trying to keep them apart and told her that she needed to be wary of him and not get too close. I should have known that it would have done the opposite. I can see on her face that she has grown fond of him.
"There's no time," I told her as I left the room.
She followed me reluctantly.
We reached outside and we both turned into our wolf forms without saying another word about it. The gardens were quiet; Bob must have told the maids and the other workers to take cover to prepare for the upcoming battle.
I could hear the faint sounds of the guards readying their battle gears; some of them were arming their ammo and others were practicing in their wolf forms. I could smell the scent of Bob near them, and I knew Kamala could also smell them. She was facing in the direction of the scent, staring off in the distance as if she was trying to get a glimpse of him.
Even in her wolf form, I could see the worry lingering in her dark green eyes. She was worried about him, and she wanted to fight with him. I couldn't let her get hurt though; I needed to make sure she was safe.
"Kamala," I said, bringing her attention back to me. "He'll be fine..."
I hated consoling her about Bob because I knew he wasn't good for her. But I could tell it was weighing on her mind.
"I know," she said, sounding defensive. "I just feel weird leaving in the middle of everything."
For a while, she was having trouble adjusting to the manor and I didn't think she was enjoying living here; it was weird that she was so against leaving all of a sudden. I couldn't help but think that was because of Bob. I didn't say anything more about it though; we needed to leave quickly.
I took off in the direction of the forest; she followed closely behind me. We leaped through the empty gardens and passed the guards at the front of the gate. They didn't say anything or try to stop us. I think they were getting used to us coming and going whenever we pleased at this point.
As weird as it sounds, we weren't slaves anymore. Marlon had set us free, and the guards had to respect that.
The woods enclosed us quickly and we were met with the peaceful sounds of nature around us. The warmth of the spring air touched our fur and tickled our features. I could hear the whistling of the birds in the highest of the trees, not caring that we were nearby. They were calling for one another, speaking in a language we couldn't understand.
I heard the soft pattering of bear paws against the dirt grounds; a twig breaking under the weight of the bear as it walked through the woods, searching for its own food. I could feel my stomach growling as the fresh scent of the flesh invaded my nose. It couldn't have been more than a mile away.
I slowed my running as I tried to get a good read of where the bear was located. I knew we didn't have much time to stop and feed, but I was so hungry, at that moment, I didn't really care that much.
Once I figured out the location of the bear; I turned my body in that direction and began charging toward it. I didn't hear or smell any other wolves nearby so I knew this bear was going to mine. The closer I got the more excited I grew. Mateo's blanket was wrapped around me and his little face also looked excited the quicker I ran.
I reached the bear within seconds; it had found its prey and was eating as I approached it. At first, it didn't see me. But once I made myself known to it, the bear looked at me with such horror that I thought it was going to die from a heart attack.
It turned to run, but it was no match for me. I sunk my teeth into its neck and it went down instantly. It croaked out in pain and fell into the dirt; blood splattering from its thick body. I ripped the flesh with my teeth and allowed the sweetness of the bear to fill my stomach.
It was a big bear and I wasn't sure how long it'll be until we reach another source of food like this so I ripped a piece off for Mateo to enjoy as well. Having fresh meat like this was good for a young wolf; that way they can be developed earlier in life. He seemed to enjoy it as well.
I wanted to also share with Kamala as well; I looked up to see if she was nearby. But she wasn't.
I frowned and stopped eating; I looked around the empty wooded path that we had just taken. There was no sign of her. Kamala's scent lingered a bit, but it seemed distant and getting further away. I couldn't even hear her nearby, so wherever she was, it wasn't anywhere close to us.
"Kamala?" I asked out loud, staring around the woods.
I was getting nervous. I looked down at Mateo who was still enjoying his food. I transitioned back into my human form and looked further around the surrounding area. "Kamala?" I said again louder.
My breathing got caught in my throat as I realized she wasn't here.
She was gone.
