Marlon couldn't believe what he was reading. He had just read journal entries from Deonna's actual birth mother, Elianna. She was the former duchess of North-Valley, Jeremy's wife. According to these entries, she fell in love and had an affair with Robert, a slave of the castle. During that affair, she ended up getting pregnant and she told Jeremy that it was his child.

She allowed Robert that chance to name the baby after his mother, Deonna.

Deonna was an obvious dark-furred wolf; there was no way that Jeremy bought the fact that she was his after Elianna gave birth. The entries stopped roughly before Deonna was born, which meant that something must have happened after she was born. It would make sense considering Deonna was thrown into an orphanage where she dealt with neglect and abuse from those taking care of her. Then when she was 3 years old, she was adopted by a commoner family, and they treated her like their own. They showed her love and compassion; something she never had before. They gave her a room with a bed and kept food in her stomach. They allowed her to be educated; she made friends and had a home.

However, dark-furred wolves were populating quickly. Their population was beginning to take over. Plus, a lot of the commoners would use these dark-furred wolves as s*x slaves and these slaves would get pregnant as well, which also kept expanding the population. The king was sick of it and called for a meeting of the nobles.

Marlon being the highest-ranked nobleman, had the largest voting power. They voted that the commoners were no longer allowed to hold slaves. The slaves that belonged to them would soon be placed in the homes of nobles and royals, but only if they were over the age of 18 and not too old and too weak. Anyone who was too old, too weak, or too young would be placed on the slave farms.

Dark-furred wolves that were too weak to a point where they could die without recovering on their own, would prove to be useless and they would be put to death.

At the time, Marlon didn't think much about it. He didn't care about the dark-furred wolves, and he didn't like the fact that the dirtball population was growing rapidly. He wanted to get rid of them as badly as the king did. He found them to be vile, uneducated, and uninteresting creatures and he thought the fewer of them there were, the better. He didn't' hesitate to put his vote in and allow for the king's treaty to be passed.

That was until he met Deonna. His world was turned upside down after he met her and everything, he thought he knew about dark-furred wolves, ended up being lies fed to him from generations before him. Deonna wasn't vile, uneducated, or uninteresting. She was beautiful, funny, and smart. He was everything he wanted in a luna and more. His wolf knew that from the beginning; his wolf could sense that she was his mate before he wanted to admit it.

Now they had a child together and another child on the way. It was going to be frowned upon and other nobles won't hesitate to knock Marlon off the highest ranking. But Marlon was starting to care less about that. What he cared about was Deonna and protecting her. He wanted nothing more than to protect her.

He loved her.

After reading these journal entries, he realized there was so much more to Deonna than either of them realized. She was the true duchess of North-Valley.

He thought back to the baby picture of Deonna that the guard found in Frederick's room. On the pack of the picture, it read: She can never know.

Which meant that this was something Frederick knew from the beginning. That must have been why Frederick was so adamant about finding her and getting rid of her because he didn't want her to know that she was the true duchess of North-Valley. He must have been watching her for a long time if he knew that she was residing in the manor and knew who she was right away.

Marlon felt disgusted.

He wondered if Alex and Petra found out that same information while residing in the castle this entire time. Were they going to use something like this against her?

"So, that's where she's been hiding the journal?" A familiar voice said from behind him.

He placed the journal on the vanity and turned to see Petra standing at the door. Her blond hair was wrapped in a braid that went down her shoulder and across her breasts. Marlon had never seen her out of a gown before, but she was wearing a tight blouse that hugged her body and curves perfectly and an even tighter pair of paints that brought out the roundness of her b**t.

She had her arms folded across her chest and her dark blue eyes were staring in his direction, but at the journal that lay on the vanity. Her pink lips were turned upward in a wicked grin that admittedly sent chills down Marlon's back.

He wasn't expecting her to be at the castle and wondered how long she's been there, but he was too stunned to speak. He couldn't believe she could pull something like this off. What kind of dark magic was she using?

"After I found out who Deonna was, I've been searching for that journal. I knew it had to be around here somewhere..." Petra said, stepping into the room and closing the door behind her.

"What do you know about this?" Marlon demanded to know.

Her gaze shot from the journal up to Marlon and her grin widened.

"I know that Deonna was Frederick's sister," Petra said, her voice laced with an evil seduction. "Frederick wanted her gone for a long time. It was something we had in common."

"So, Frederick knew about this?" Marlon asked, eyeing her carefully.

Petra chuckled.

"Of course, he knew. He was there when she was born," Petra said, waving him off like she was shooing away a fly.

"What happened to her birth parents?" Marlon asked.

Petra rolled her eyes and sighed.

"All I know is that Frederick's mother, Elianna, had second thoughts about this child. She had some affair with a slave and thought she could hide it from Jeremy, Frederick's father. In my opinion, that was a stupid idea because the baby was going to come out dark- furred regardless. As soon as Jeremy saw it, he would go insane. So, Elianna decided to have the baby in the slave shack. The slave she had an affair with helped her give birth, Frederick was there with her, and he was mortified at what he was seeing. He couldn't believe his own mother would have an affair with a dirtball," Petra explained.

"So, she gave birth in the slave shack?" Marlon asked, confused.

Petra nodded.

"Yes, according to Frederick. He remembered it vividly," she answered, grimacing as she thought about it.

"Then what?" Marlon asked.

She rolled her eyes again; clearly annoyed that she had to explain any of this to him as if he should have already known. Like it was common knowledge.

"I don't know what happened after that. She sent Frederick inside. She returned and disappeared for days and when she returned, Jeremy had her sentenced to death. She died and they had no idea what happened to the baby, or her father. But after years of tracking her down, Frederick found Deonna and has been keeping watch of her ever since. He was worried that she was going to figure out who she was and come for his position as duke. That she was going to want his rightful share and it would ruin everything. When he found out that she was residing in your manor, it worried him."

"How long have you been in relations with the duke?" Marlon asked.

"Where do you think I came from, to begin with? The duke wanted your ranking and needed someone on the inside. So, he sent me..." Petra said, widening her smile.

Marlon felt sick again. This entire thing has been a setup from the beginning; he was just a pawn in the game the duke was playing.

"You've been working with him the entire time?" Marlon asked.

"He offered me something that I wanted," Petra said.

"What's that?" Marlon was hesitant in asking.

"Power," Petra answered. "Coincidently, that's exactly what your son wants too. Which is what makes us such a great team." "You can't have Mooncrest," Marlon growled.

She smiled.

"I don't remember asking," Petra said.

"What are you even doing here, Petra?" Marlon asked. "Where's Alex? Shouldn't you be with him at the manor or something?"

Petra laughed.

"Oh right..." she breathed. "I'm getting to that part. I'm just here to finish some leftover business."

Before Marlon could ask what, she meant by that, she reached into her back pocket; he didn't realize she was carrying anything in her back pocket and as she reached, he grew more worried. Heard the cocking of the gun and then it was pointed at him.

"This shouldn't take long," she said with a grin.
