Chapter 124

Mateo

I lie Alita's body down on the bed in the guest room we gave her. I breathe out as I watch her chest move up and down with her steady breathing. I need to make sure that whatever Sofia gave her was safe, I want no harm coming to her or the baby. Even though I understand that she's struggling, I'm having a hard time with Alita. Her whole life has been turned upside down, but she won't even consider what we're trying to tell her.

I get it, I do, I'm sure we sound like a bunch of crazy people to her. But there must be some way to get her to remember her old life. But... is that what's best for her? Knowing that she's been playing house with the man who kidnapped her?

I groan as I leave her room. I need to go downstairs and talk with her family and explain everything that happened on our end and maybe they could explain some things that don't make sense to us.

As I come into the living room her parents, Evan and Claudia, and her brother, Peelle all look at me. I breathe out and say, "So, um, I guess I should introduce myself and start explaining everything. My name is Mateo Rossi, I am the Beta of the Verona Pack, and I am Alita's true mate."

Peelle's eyebrows furrow and he presses his lips together, but he doesn't say anything. I continue, "I met Alita at a store. I was thrilled, I've been looking for my mate for four years and seeing her there was a dream come true for me. But when I hugged her and tried to tell her who I was... she didn't believe me. She told me she already had a mate and a baby on the way, at the time she wasn't showing."

I take a deep breath and try not to feel uncomfortable from her family's staring. I continue, "I followed her and saw where she lived. Something was off and I couldn't put my finger on it. As time went on, I just wanted to be near her. I went to the market constantly in hopes of seeing her. I learned her 'mate's' name is Aamon Walker and that he was several years older than her. Luck would have that, that our Luna Sofia was actually going to the same doctor as Alita, so she was able to keep an eye on her. Then two days ago I saw her at the store after she had a doctor's appointment. She passed out and I didn't know what to do so I brought her here. She met Lorenzo and Sofia officially and we all agreed that we thought there was something going on here and then we received your email." There's silence for a few minutes before Claudia surprises me by being the one to talk. She says, "Alita was taken from us almost a year and a half ago. We had been having a party to celebrate her brother and their mate's first year as Alpha's and Luna and to celebrate that they were expecting twins. Before the party even started, we were attacked. I told Alita to go inside and hide, but... I guess she didn't listen to me, or she wasn't fast enough."

Claudia's voice cracks as tears fall down her face and Evan puts his arm around her pulling her into his chest. His eyes meet mine and he says in a deep voice, "I want to make this clear, my daughter will be coming home with us."

My heart stops. Of course, they would want her to go back home. But what does that mean for us?

She currently doesn't even recognize me as her mate, but I can't go back to a life where I don't see her.

But how am I supposed to go to North America? I'm the Beta! I can't just leave for who knows how long!

Claudia sits up and notices my facial expression and says, "We want her to come home, but we understand she's your mate. You're more than welcome to come back with us and help her adjust. Maybe when the time is right, she can come back with you." I force a smile, I appreciate the offer, I just don't know if it's doable.

I'm grateful when Lorenzo speaks up, "Mateo, you can go with them. No matter what you'll still have a position here when you return."

I turn to face Lorenzo and Sofia and Sofia smiles at me. I ask, "Are-are you sure?"

Sofia chuckles, "Of course, Mateo. This is your mate; we can't tear you away from her."

I can't help but smile as tears prickle in my eyes and I say, "Thank you for understanding."

Before anything else can happen, I notice her scent first. She's awake, and she's listening in. We all get a little too quiet, so she must've known her cover was blown so Alita walks into the room. Her family stares at her like she's this long-lost treasure, but she doesn't pay attention to them, her eyes are zeroed in on me.

She takes a deep breath and says, "You're supposed to be my mate, right?"

I nod in confirmation, and I answer with a small smile, "I am your mate, Alita."

Her eyes close, her face scrunches up, and her teeth clench together before she breathes out, "My name is Aurora. Now, if you care about me the way you say that you do then I demand for you to take me home."

I stare at her for a moment and I realize the obvious loophole in her words. She said for me to take her home, and I know she means for me to take her back to Aamon in Venice. But, her true home is in North America with her family.

I smile at her as I take a step closer to her, "Okay, if that's what would make you the happiest then I will take you home. But would you please do me the honor of taking a walk with me?"

She looks at me skeptically, but she has nothing to lose so she puts her hand in mine and says, "Okay."

We walk out the door and I can sense the anxiety from her family so I mind link Lorenzo, "Talk with Sofia and figure out a way we can knock Alita out safely so that it won't harm her and the baby. We'll take her back home to North America with her family." "You're brilliant, Mateo, we're on it!"
