Alpha's Little Vampire Mate -
Chapter 99
Chloe's POV: "Lilian!"
I marched towards Mark's and Lily's, a scowl plastered on my face and my rage was enough to make me topple over. "Lilian!" I screamed, flinging open the front door of their house and stomped in.
A startled Lilian dashed out of the kitchen, flour cover her hands and the black apron she always wore whenever she was cooking. Her eyes settled on me and surprise flickered over her features, then gave way for curiosity. "Chloe? What's-" I raised a hand, stopping her mid sentence. "Don't bother saying anything," I spat in a harsh tone of voice. "I did not come here to have a tete-a-tete with you, neither did I come to have a reconciliation with you," I said, refusing to get affected by the hurt look in her eyes. "I need you help!"
She looked surprised, but then nodded vigorously. "What do you want? Tell me, I will help you with anything at all, just tell me," she said readily, already undoing her apron.
"It's Cara," I replied with a sigh and just as I had expected, her face squeezed into an ugly frown. I walked away from her and went and saw myself on one of the couches. She came along, coming to sit beside me but was thoughtful enough to put some reasonable distance between us. She was not my favourite person in the world right now, and I really appreciated the fact that she did not misunderstand my coming over to her house. I narrated all what Marcus had earlier told me and added a few details to spice it up and make her more furious. Before I could even ask had to accompany me to confront Cara, she was already out the door, ordering me to follow behind her. "Cara!"
"Cara!" I yelled after Lilian. We had asked for directions and now, we were standing right in front of the house they had described as hers. We kept telling for her to come out and after about five minutes, an old, frail woman stepped out of the little house.
That should be her grandmother I heard she lived with. This woman was human, I wondered how she could be related to Cara. Also, I had never been told that we had a human amongst us, that was an exception of Lily. "Luna," she still struggled to bow and I rushed towards her, helping her down on the wooden bench that was outside of her house. "Are you looking for my Cara?" She asked in a weak voice.
"Yes, we are," Lily answered for me, the raw fury in her eyes were even to get the old lady shaking and I felt disappointed at her when she snapped. "Do not be hiding her in there, bring her out before I go in there and drag her out here!" The old lady gave me an apologetic look, then sent a scared look towards Lily. I guess I was too good at hiding my anger, because I was also boiling with rage that I could burn Cara to the death, if I got my hands on her!
"Alright," she gave a tired sigh. "I will tell you where Cara is but first, would you mind listening to what I have to say first?"
"Yes, we would mind, just tell us where she is already!"
I gave Lily a dirty look, and knowing me so well and maybe already guessing the next thing I was going to say, she huffed, crossing her arms over her chest. I turned back to the old woman. "Onlt five minutes, then tell us where she is because I woul not be letting her off the hook this time!"
I dropped down on the other side of the bench beside her, while Lily took the other space on the bench, sitting by her right.
"Thank you for your time and patience, I will make it as brief as I can..."
She then started by telling us that she was not taking sides with Cara but that Cara had not always been a bad girl. Then she told us how she never knew who Cara's biological parents were. She had taken Cara in, after someone had dumped her on her door step at nine years old, some seventy something years ago. After she discovered what Cara really was, she started a research about humans that could she shift into wolves and she panicked, when some people got to know about it. She took Cara and ran away from her home until she came across Marcus who took them in and gave them a place to stay and they also became part of the pack. As time went on, Cara began developing feelings for Marcus and no matter how much she kicked against it, Cara would not give up. She knew that Marcus was a good man but also did not ignore that fact that he loved women and had a lot of them in his life. Gradually, Cara became one of his many women and he gifted her with a lot of gifts which she used to help her grandmother as she aged and started to become weak. Cara's grandmother also explained that the reason why Cara had wanted to become royalty at all cost, was because she wanted power and wealth to be able to take good care of her(her grandmother).
She did say a lot of things and I listened with rapt attention. I could tell that Lily was also listening, because the scowl on her face had softened to something which I was feeling inside of me; pity. After hearing Cara's story, I really did pity her but I could no longer tolerate her if she thought she could keep doing silly things like what she did with Marcus and I would permit it. I was going to beat her arse up and that was a fact!
"Lily," I called, giving her a knowing look. I turned back to Cara's grandmother. "Thank you so much ma'am, we are going to be leaving now," I said, gesturing for Lily to stand up. She gave us a suspicious look, glaring mildly from me to Lily. "So... are you both still going to assault my Cara?"
I fought the urge not to scoff, only because I knew it was going to seem disrespectful. "Believe me when I say, no one can ever assault you granddaughter, she is more sly than what you think of her," I tried to put my point across without actually wanting to call Cara a whore in front of her granny.
Not wanting any more questions, I started to walk away from her and Lily followed behind me. Whatever plea Cara's grandmother was telling at us, fell on deaf ears. I was not listening and obviously, Lily also was not. Everyone knew that Cara was now a glorified whore and a trouble maker. She could have been gone before I returned home, but she had wanted to taunt me on purpose and for that, I would give her just the perfect treatment she deserved!
"Um..."
I tensed up, when I realized that Lily was still following behind me. For a moment there, I had even forgotten that she was with me, as I had gotten used to being without her. Now I was almost over the anger for Cara, the anger I still had for Lily surfaced and it felt awkward being that close to her. I was waiting to hear what she had to say, but she had gone silent. I was just about to snap at her, when she finally spoke.
"So, what now?"
I scoffed, shaking my head at her ridiculousness. "What else? Go home and continue cooking," I spat harshly.
I heard her intake of a sharp breath, and her steps sounded more urgent as she walked faster to catch up with me. "If you know what is good for you, keep maintaining the distance that you have been giving," I growled in a threatening voice, still not stopping my strides. "It will do you a lot of good."
Well, almost forgot that Lily was not one to take orders from anyone, not even when I was her senior in command. She tugged hard on my hand and I was forced to turn around and look at her. "Look her Chloe, that's enough!"
I rolled my eyes, muttering profanities under my breath. She really had a lot of guts to tell at me that way, when she was the one who almost sold me out. "I am not even started with you," I gave her a dirty look. "Traitor," I hissed, not feeling remorseful at all for the hurt that crossed her features.
She took in a shaky breath, her lips slightly trembled as she tried to speak but the stink eyes I was giving her got her a little intimidated and she lowered her eyes, taking her lower lip in between her teeth. "I'm sorry," she finally whispered. "Sorry for yourself," I muttered back, taking my eyes away when I get the heat burning in them and the wetness at the rims of my eyes.
"I know I did the wrong thing but trust me, I was not going to give you away in exchange for Mark, not even when my own life was put in danger!"
"Is that an excuse?" I scoffed, trying to sound like my chest wasn't heavy and I was not struggling to keep a persistent tear from dropping out of my eyes. "I am yet to hear a more flimsier excuse, welldone Lily, you are doing well!" She huffed in frustration, the time of her voice going higher as she spoke again. "They held Mark for almost a week and they threatened to kill him if I did not lead them to you, but I did not! I stared away from you for as long as I could to keep them off your back, I even tried to fight them off but they overpowered me and came looking for you the very day they took me." She panted hard and fast, her tears rolling down her face like a dam had broken inside of her eyes. "Tell me Chloe, would you not have done worst of they had Marcus?"
I gave her a look of disbelief. "You think so poorly of me, don't you? You think I would give you away only because I want to protect my mate?"
She did not reply.
I shook my head, blinking my eyes repeatedly as I no longer had any control on the tears and any second, my resolve would break. "Is that why you did not tell me? Because you think I'm selfish right?"
Her eyes widened and she began to shake her head in denial.
"Don't!" I yelled. "Do not even try to deny it because we both know that that is the truth! Since you think so low of me, why don't you keep to your high self and let me be by my low self?"
"Look Chloe, I did not mean to get you offended!"
"But you did!"
She sighed, slamming one palm on her forehead. "I did not mean it the way you are taking it, I was just making an instance, why do you find it so difficult to understand me?!"
"It's because you find it hard to trust me. Stop making it look like I am over reacting, when you are the one in the wrong!" I yelled back at her.
She sniffed, using the back of her hand to wipe her nose and I did same, fanning my face to dry up the tears. I took a deep breath, finally feeling a lot more lighter as I had spoken to Lily. I was not sure of I was ready to forgive her, her carelessness would have almost cost us both our lives, including Mark's and maybe even Marcus's.
"I don't want to fight you," Lily muttered, staring up at me with apologetic eyes. "Can we not put the 'what ifs' behind us and go back to how we used to be?"
I shook my head at her. "I am not ready to forgive you. When I think I am ready, I will let you know. But untill then, stay the hell away from me!" And I turned around and left!
