Alpha's One Night Bride -
Alpha’s One Night Bride – Chapter 93
As we were heading back to Sabrebite, Spencer wolf-linked us to let us know that Jessica had woken up. But he said something was wrong and that we needed to get back right away. I couldn’t imagine would possibly be wrong; I mean, she actually woke up. That was huge. Dr. Beverly was apprehensive about her not waking up, which made us worried that she wasn’t going to wake up as well. I was excited to see her and find out everything that happened.
Jonathan kept telling me that I can’t hassle her with questions. I needed to let her rest and come to terms with what happened to begin with.
“You weren’t there, Arina,” he said as we approached Dr. Beverly’s office. “It was really bad. She was beaten to a point where she was almost unrecognizable until we got the b***d cleaned off her face and some of the swellings went down.”
“I get that, but don’t you want to know her side of the story. Like what set him off, to begin with?” I asked, staring up at him.
He looked disappointed in my question; he shook his head sadly and sighed.
“Whatever set him off, it wasn’t worth almost losing her life over,” he answered.
I knew he was right; it didn’t matter what set him off. What matters was how he reacted to her, and he nearly killed her. He was aggressive, violent, and extremely selfish in what he did to her, and that alone shows what kind of wolf Greggory was. We all trusted him; for the longest time, we trusted him. But he was playing with us the entire time.
Even Willa admitted that this stemmed back to Greggory’s father. It was his father that wanted the Overseer title. Once his father died, Greggory took the handle of things. Willa posed as Melissa to keep me close and push me towards Greggory; once I was under Greggory’s radar, he befriended Jonathan to keep me close as well. All because they wanted to use our future child as a sacrifice so Greggory could have the Davis bloodline and be the Overseer.
We’ve been so deceived for so long, that I felt disgusted just thinking about it. I hated knowing that we were being watched for most of our lives. We thought of him as a friend, but he was just using us. He married Jessica just so he could remain close to us after we married and left Moon-Valley. I didn’t trust him when I found out he “mated” with my best friend; I knew something was up, but I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what it was. He was sketchy and despite me telling Jessica of my worries, she wouldn’t listen to me.
I mean, I didn’t expect her to. She thought he was her mate. I couldn’t blame her for being defensive.
“Okay,” I said after a long pause. “I won’t ask her any questions.”
Jonathan kissed the top of my head before we entered the waiting room. Spencer was oddly enough waiting in one of the seats; he looked nervous, or just upset in general. I couldn’t tell. He was still hard to read considering we haven’t known him long. He stayed in one of our guest bedrooms, but he was hardly ever there, except for at night to sleep. But for the most part, he spent his days with Jessica watching over her as she remained in her coma.
He seemed like a good guy though and for someone who hardly knows Jessica, he seems to care for her a great deal.
“What’s going on?” I asked as we approached him.
“I don’t know…” he said; he seemed genuinely confused.
“What do you mean?” Jonathan asked.
“She didn’t seem like she knew who I was, or what was going on. She started screaming that a strange guy was in her room. Then she realized she wasn’t in her room and started screaming that she’s been kidnapped. But then realized she didn’t know where her room was and started crying because she was confused. Then cried harder when she couldn’t remember her own name…” Spencer went on and on.
My heart pounded heavily against my chest with every word he spoke. It sounded like she was facing memory loss. My heart broke thinking about how badly Greggory had hurt her to cause memory loss.
Dr. Beverly came out of the room moments later; she looked sad and a little tired at the same time. She smiled weakly when she noticed Jonathan and me standing there; she came walking over with her shoulders slumped in a defeated motion.
“She’s awake and stable,” Dr. Beverly announced, to our relief. “It looks like she’s going to be okay. But she suffered some minor brain damage that is causing a memory loss. There’s no telling if she will come back from that, but from what I see I don’t think it’s everlasting damage.”
I exhaled the breath I’d been holding in since we got there. I was so relieved to hear that, but I couldn’t help but still be worried for Jessica. Once Greggory found out she was still alive, there was no doubt in my mind that he will come and try to finish the job.
“Can we see her?” I asked.
“One at a time,” Dr. Beverly said. “She’s a bit freaked out about not knowing anything.”
She glanced over at Spencer who gave her a sheepish head nod.
I walked into the room where Jessica was; she was sitting up in bed, staring at the wall ahead of her. She had an expression on her face that I couldn’t read; her eyes were misty with tears. The swelling had gone down a lot since she arrived here, but she was still bruised up pretty badly and her head was still wrapped in bandages.
As I approached her, she glanced over at me, and her face fell. She looked terrified and her l*p began quivering in fear once again.
“Do I know you?” She asked softly.
My heart broke. I sighed sadly and looked down at my feet.
“You used to,” I told her. “We were best friends.”
Her frown deepened and she stared around my face.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I don’t remember you…”
“I know you don’t,” I told her softly. “I’m just glad you’re okay, Jessica.”
She looked away from me and back towards the wall, her face growing unreadable again.
“Jessica is what those others called me as well,” she told me. “But that name doesn’t sound familiar.”
“It’s your name,” I told her. “You grew up in the Moon-Valley pack. That’s how you and I met.”
“I wish I could remember that…”
“It’s okay that you don’t remember,” I assured her. “It’s probably not a good time for you to remember anything anyway.”
She looked back at me, questions in her eyes. Questions she wanted me to answer, but I promised Jonathan I would lay off.
“What happened to me?” She asked, her voice hoarse.
“They didn’t tell you?” I asked in return.
She shook her head.
“They just told me I was in an accident. But I get the feeling there’s more to it,” she answered.
I sighed; I wasn’t sure how much I should tell her. I didn’t know what she could handle.
“Did someone do this to me?” She asked; her voice was barely audible.
Without thinking about it, I nodded slowly. Tears filled her eyes again and spilled over and down her cheeks. She bit the bottom of her l*p to keep herself from sobbing louder, but it was no use. Once she started, she couldn’t stop. She buried her face in the palms of her hands and I watched her shoulders shake as she sobbed into her hands.
I sighed and sat down on the bed beside her. I put my hand on her back as she continued crying.
“Who would do such a thing?” She asked, peering at me through her fingers. “Who could take my memories like this?”
I didn’t answer at first; I wasn’t sure how to answer that. But she could easily read what I was thinking based on my expression.
“Or was it my life they were trying to take?” She whispered. “That’s what it was, wasn’t it?”
I sighed again and closed my eyes; I didn’t want to see her face as broke and distraught as it was. I felt awful and I hated that she was asking me these questions even though I knew she couldn’t handle it right now. Jonathan was going to kill me if Dr. Beverly didn’t get to me first.
“Please,” she begged, grabbing my arm gently. “Tell me the truth.”
“It was your husband,” I blurted. Her eyes widened and her mouth fell open. “He did this to you.”
“I’m married?” She whispered.
I nodded.
She looked as though she was in deep thought for a moment and then she gasped; she held onto her chest as though it physically pained her.
“It’s that guy out there, isn’t it?” She asked, pointing towards the doorway. She must have been talking about Spencer. “I felt weird when I woke up and saw him. Like my wolf was anxious for some reason. I couldn’t tell if she was excited or terrified. It was a mix between the two. She was so loud, and I couldn’t understand what she was saying. She was all over the place and I couldn’t remember anything. I was so scared,” she cried.
So, her wolf recognized him and was trying to tell Jessica about him, but Jessica was too confused and couldn’t listen properly was my guess. Jessica had never had an actual mate before and probably didn’t know what it really felt like to find one; especially considering she was only 17 and wouldn’t become obvious to her until she turns 18 or when her mate marks her as his.
But now that Jessica doesn’t have her memories; she really doesn’t know what it would feel like to have a mate. Not that she would normally considering she thought Greggory was her mate. But how would she know when it’s never happened before? She isn’t sure what it’s supposed to feel like.
“I promise, we aren’t going to let your husband get to you anymore. He’s not going to hurt you,” I promised her; she stayed quiet. “That guy in the waiting room right now… he’s not your husband,” I added.
She shot me a look of surprise.
“He’s not?” She asked, she sounded almost relieved.
“No…” I told her. “He’s a really good friend that cares deeply for you.”
She looked as though she was getting lost in thought once again. A faint smile played on her lips as she touched her fingertips to her chest and really began to feel her wolf stirring excitedly inside. I could feel her wolf from where I was sitting, and it made me chuckle; her wolf wasn’t terrified of him. She knew him as her mate and loved him; it was true, and it pleased me greatly to know that. I don’t know if she fully understood what her wolf was saying, but I could tell she was no longer fearing him as she once did before we arrived.
“He stayed with me while I was asleep?” She whispered, looking back at me.
It surprised me that she knew that, but maybe her wolf was filling in some pieces.
I nodded once.
“My wolf isn’t afraid of him,” she confirmed softly. “She isn’t afraid of you either. She says you’re a friend. She also says that guy, Spencer, I believe his name is, he’s really cute and kind. I feel bad for how I reacted to him earlier.”
I chuckled as I stood up.
“Want me to go and get him for you?” I asked.
Her eyes lit up.
“He’s still here?” She asked.
I chuckled again and nodded.
“Yeah, I don’t foresee him leaving your side anytime soon,” I told her as I headed back into the waiting room.
“Wait!” She called after me before I could open the door. I turned back to her. “You never told me your name and my wolf is still a bit foggy on names herself.”
I smiled.
“Arina,” I told her. “Don’t worry, Jessica. You will get your memory back.”
