She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

Her eyes lit up when she touched her earlobe, but then her heart sank when she realised her earring was gone.

Kira saw the rapid change in her expression. 'Miss Reyes, what's wrong?"

'My earrings are missing. Gwen inspected the floor of the cage but didn't see her pearl earrings.

Kira didn't know what to say.

This was probably not the time to worry about their valuables.

'There's a tracker in the earring, activated once the pearl is broken. Gwen sighed. 'My...frien will be able to find us then.'

Gwen wondered if Gideon had noticed she was missing.

Probably not.

She smiled bitterly.

Gideon had eyes only for Kira Hewitt.

How ironic that he abandoned her to chase after Hewitt, only for the substitute lover to end up with the real deal.

Gwen was curious to find out the look on Gideon's face once he saw the two of them together.

She tried to stand up in the cage but was forced to bend at the waist as the cage was too small. Could they be on that table over there?' Gwen looked up and followed Kira's line of sight

A small Formica table stood about five metres away from the cage.

Its dusty surface was covered with a wallet, a phone and two oval-shaped beads.

"That's all my stuff.' Gwen saw her earrings.

'We should get the earrings,' Kira suggested.

'Don't you think I know that?' Gwen snapped back

Kira grimaced.

Miss Reyes was probably upset over getting kidnapped when all she wanted to do was help.

Kira turned her attention back to the table.

It was too far away.

She couldn't even stick a hand out through the holes in the wire mesh.

There were no tools she could find.

Gwen pondered the same challenge.

Neither could come up with a solution.

Kira missed Austyn more than ever.

She had no idea how much time had passed since she was taken.

Did Austyn know she had disappeared?

The man seemed to know everything.

If he were in her situation, he would have probably figured out a dozen ways to escape.

Kira tried to imagine what she would do if she were Austyn, but gave up when she couldn't come up with a workable plan.

Both women looked up when they heard the sound of keys rattling and footsteps approaching The

The guy heard her.

Kira had spent less than fifteen minutes with Miss Reyes, but she was starting to get a sense of the woman's temperament.

Miss Reyes' courteous demeanour hid a haughtiness that became apparent once she was no

longer in polite company.

Kira realised that their similarities were just skin-deep.

They had completely different personalities.

Even when she was locked inside a cage, Miss Reyes still held her head high.

The shorter man beat a wooden stick against the cage. 'Shut your trap! Or I'll make you!'

Gwen glared back at him.

Her mouth was open, ready with another insult.

But Kira suddenly slapped her. 'Shut up! Stop provoking them!"

Everyone else in the room was stunned by her action.

Gwen touched her cheeks.

Gwen raised her right hand but Kira caught her wrist.
