Chapter 0034

Caroline's POV:

I was in disbelief at the cruelty of Sophia's words. I was always willing to give Sophia the benefit of the doubt, but I now knew that she was nothing but a nasty, hurtful woman. I didn't understand how William or anyone for that matter could fall in love with a woman like that.

"You ruined my family, and now you own William," I whispered, trapped in a toxic mix between despair and anger. "Did you really need to destroy my garden? Are you really that spiteful?"

Sophia turned her head with a disgusted scoff. "It smelled disgusting," she replied, rocking her baby back and forth in stilted jerks. "It smelled like a dead animal." She shot me a devious look. "But I'm sure you know what I mean, right?"

My jaw dropped in disbelief and I could only sputter out a tragic response. "What? You knew my puppy was there... Oh my god, you defiled his grave on purpose! You defiled its grave just to spite me!"

Sophia simply rolled her eyes in annoyance. "Of course I did, idiot," she scowled, her lip raised in a sneer. "How dare you let a dead mutt bother my family? What else was I supposed to do other than get rid of him? You- oh."

She was interrupted when little George began to stir from all the commotion. He opened his beautiful blue eyes, letting out a noise of discomfort at the noisy fight between Sophia and I. His mother gave me a scathing look. "Look what you've done," she scolded. "You frightened George, and now he's awake."

She softly crooned to George, giving him a pacifier in hopes of getting him to calm down. I felt my heart drop at the sight of taking care of her bothered infant. Despite her callous nature, she seemed to be a good mother.

Pain flickered in my soul, knowing that I would never be able to comfort my own baby. My poor baby would never grow up to know his mother or feel his mother's love.

Tears were brimming in my eyes, but I messily wiped them away. I couldn't let myself be seen like I was weak in front of Sophia; a woman with cruel intentions. It was best that I leave and find comfort elsewhere. I couldn't deal with Sophia's harassment anymore. "I'm going to leave," I said, swiftly heading towards the door. "I'll talk to William tomorrow."

Sophia laughed bitterly at me from the sofa. "Are you returning to your deadbeat father?"

I stopped dead in my tracks at her pointed taunt, turning on my heel to glare at her. "What did you just say about my father?"

"You heard me," she snapped, ignoring George as he grew more discontent. "He's an incompetent, spineless, pathetic man. I can't believe you're actually trying to prove him

innocent."

"How dare you? Take that back," I snarled, my nails digging into my palms. "He is none of those things."

"It's true," she jeered with a laugh. "You're an idiot if you actually think he's a respectable man. He's a monster!"

I felt my blood start to boil. "Don't you dare talk about my father that way!"

"And you know what?" Sophia said, a smirk crossing her face. "You're just as pathetic as he is!"

She suddenly stood up from her chair, creeping closer and closer as she relentlessly insulted me. Her eyes held only malice and devious intent. She was obviously planning something, but I couldn't figure out her scheme.

The sudden distant noise of tires on pavement signaled a car rolling into the driveway.

"William's back!" I felt a light elation in my soul at the fact that I could finally get Sophia to stop tormenting me.

When I chanced a look back at Sophia, I realized she was still getting closer, a hateful look in her eye. Unease filled me just seeing her get ever closer, and so I steadily backed away, putting my hand between us. "Get away from me!" I ordered, hoping she would leave me alone. Don't come any closer!"

The sound of keys jingling rang out just outside the door, Sophia cried out and fell backwards, landing on her side with George still tucked in her arms. She let out a terrified scream, shocking me to my core.

Little George was alarmingly jostled as he landed with Sophia. Although he remained unharmed, the movement and Sophia's scream was enough to get him to start wailing. He rustled and kicked in his swaddle, crying out for comfort, but his mother kept yelping as though she were in pain.

I was dumbfounded at the display, but just as it clicked in my head what was happening, the door opened and William walked in.

Sophia looked up at William with crocodile tears, reaching out for him "helplessly". "William, help me!" she cried.

William dropped his suitcase in shock, his enraged glare falling on me. "Caroline!" he shouted, furious. "What did you do? What are you doing in my house?"
