Chapter 0046 Caroline's POV:

One of William's worst traits was how he always had a need to be dominant. It was as if he expected everyone in the world to be subservient to him. It made me angry to think about just how much he had gotten away with because his very name made people afraid of saying a critical word around him.

I wasn't an idiot; going to see him was definitely a trap, but I had no choice. What kind of daughter would I be if I just abandoned my father?

Martin clearly felt awful for me. Sympathy rang in his voice as he tried his best to come up with a solution to my problem. "I can help," he told me. "I can get someone on the case we'll get your father back."

"There's no need," I replied, my voice weak but determined. "You've already helped me so much as it is. I can't bear the thought of owing you any more than I already do."

A deep frown settled into his features. "Caroline, you don't owe me anything," he tried to tell

but my mind was already made up.

me,

"It's going to be okay," I said, mustering up a comforting smile. "I can solve it on my own, and I can protect myself. Everything will be fine.

Martin watched me with a somber look in his eye before finally he lowered his head with a sigh. "If you say so," he murmured, leaning in to give me a hug. "Just don't be afraid to call, alright? I'll be there as soon as you need me." "Thank you, Martin," I whispered, returning the embrace before pulling away. "I'll make sure my father is okay. I swear it."

Martin generously drove me back to my house, watching worriedly as I left his car. I laid on the sofa, taking the time to think about everything that had happened to me in the past few days. Was I really about to give into William's demands?

In the end, I knew it was the right thing to do. I loved my father more than anything, and I was going to make sure that he was out of harm's way no matter what. If William was being truthful, I would only need to grit my teeth through his presence for a week.

It was a few anxious hours later that I heard a car pull up to my house. Knowing William's penchant for luxury, it had to be one of his chauffeurs. I leisurely packed a suitcase full of my clothes and I walked out with a dreary look. The driver of the pricey vehicle gave me an impatient look. "Mr. Anderson has sent me here to take you home."

I nearly laughed when he called William's villa my "home". I refused to even step foot in that house ever again. Didn't he know he already had a mistress there?

"William's villa is not my home," I snapped back, putting my suitcase in the back of the car.

"Oh, you're not going there," he replied, beginning to drive as soon as I slid into the back seat. "You're going to a luxury apartment."

I glared at the back of the seat, regret for my decision already bubbling up. It was cruel to refer to this strange place as my home, though I did find laughter at the idea of William needing to spend so much money just to cope with two women under his care. Did Sophia know that her true love couldn't forget his ex-wife?

Upon arriving at the magnificent-looking apartment building, William was standing out front, arrogance over his features. Why did he insist on waiting for me with such a smug expression? At this point, his inane antics were starting to bore me.

I refused to make eye contact as I brought my suitcase up to him. "Where is my father?" I asked coldly. I was done playing nice with William.

"He's safe in a private sanatorium," he told me with a false smile. "I arranged for a nurse to take care of him."

"When can I see him?" I demanded

"After a week." He rudely reached for my suitcase, but I ignored him and hauled it inside the apartment myself.

In the living area was a little old maid (because of course there was) who greeted me with a polite smile. "You must have had a long trip," she told me, handing me a water bottle. "Please, rehydrate."

"Thank you, ma'am," I murmured, taking a swig of the refreshing drink without thinking too much of it.

Stepping inside my extravagant new bedroom, I began putting away unhurriedly. As I was finishing up, I nearly stumbled when I stood up straight, feeling a little woozy. Even as I sat down on my bed, my head grew even fuzzier. Through blurring vision, I witnessed William casually enter the room.

"What did you do to my drink?" I demanded with slurring words. I tried to sit up straight, but gravity was winning out against my failing body.

"Just something to help you rest," William chuckled deviously, glancing outside the door." Laden, bring the doctor in."

My heart stopped when I heard more people approach the room? What were they trying to do? The doctor swiftly approached me and I tried to protest, but I barely had any strength to resist.
