Chapter 0048

Caroline's POV:

When I jumped, I knew at that moment that I truly wanted to die. The world was just too horrible. It wasn't fair to my father because he needed me now more than ever, but I couldn't live my life full of shame and void of my dignity.

There was a terrifying chance that I might survive and live with a disability for the rest of my life, but it made no difference to me. I was a cancer patient, after all, so I was doomed from the

start.

The tragic splat of my body hitting the ground never came. In fact, I wasn't falling at all. My wrist was held in a death grip as I dangled five stories above the rain-spattered ground.

Looking up in confusion, I saw William's face at the window, grasping my wrist with a pained expression. Why was he trying to save me? Why did he look so terrified at the thought of my death? Isn't that what he wanted: for me to die?

"Hold on," he rasped in a scared voice, struggling to pull me back into his arms. "I'll pull you up!" The rain was rapidly loosening his grip, he didn't let up, using all of his strength to hang onto my limp body.

The rain felt cold against my skin, just like how I felt in my soul. I was completely apathetic, not caring if he succeeded or not. If I slipped through his grip and fell five stories, at least I would finally have my peace.

William's hands trembled from the immense strain, but he shockingly didn't give up his efforts. With the very last of his strength, he shouted out and yanked me through the open frame. His legs gave out and he fell onto his back with a pained yell. The momentum caused me to stumble forward and land on top of him, where we were face to face.

In an instant, William's face flitted through several different emotions. First there was immense relief, then lingering confusion, and then he was hit with rage.

"You crazy bat," he snapped, sitting up and grabbing my sore wrist. "Are you insane?"

Now out of the freezing rain and away from the daunting window, I found myself returning to reason. Without warning, I leapt up and turned away from him so I didn't have to see his face. I could hear little George start to whine on the bed, restless from the commotion. "Why did you save me?" I demanded. "You're always thinking about how much of a pest.I am to your and Sophia's happy life. Why didn't you just let me die?"

"I didn't want you to die!" William roared, causing his baby to start wailing on the bed. He sighed and gingerly took George into his arms, rocking him back and forth. "I never wanted you to die!"

I snorted with a mixture of amusement and disbelief. "Yeah? That's not what you said back at the jewelry store, remember?" I snapped.

William struggled to respond to that, but his efforts fell flat. He just rocked his baby into a docile state, watching me with a clenched jaw. "I didn't mean it like that," he said at last, but I didn't believe him for even a second,

We were surprised by a sudden knock at the door. In unison, William and I both yelled " what?", causing the person behind the door to jump in surprise.

"Mr. Anderson," the maid called through the door, "Mr. Laden just sent some documents that he wanted you to see as soon as possible.

William's eyes widened with elation and he put down his baby once more. "That must be the report! Give it to me!"

I was stunned, knowing they were talking about the medical reports from when they invasively took my blood. The thought of my secret finally being exposed made me sick, and I leapt to get to it first.

William was much faster than me, though, and swiftly snatched the papers out of the maid's hand. As his eyes carefully scanned the pages, I was scared to know just how he would feel. Would he be angry? Sad? Overjoyed? With William it was always a mystery.

A look of annoyance and frustration suddenly crossed over his face and he furiously threw the papers on the ground in front of me. "Are you serious?" he growled. "You've been playing games with me this entire time, haven't you?"

Confusion mounted inside of me as I struggled to understand. What was wrong? I grabbed the papers and diligently read the details, and to my great surprise, my diagnosis was gastroenteritis with no other diseases. Shocked, I rapidly skimmed over the summary several times, but the stunning diagnosis remained the same. Had someone tampered with the results?
