Chapter 0064
William's POV:
I urgently arranged a team of SWAT to rescue Caroline. The fear of losing her was overwhelming. Thankfully, I wasn't too late.
When I successfully found Caroline, she looked so broken and damaged. I had never seen Caroline like that, beaten and tied up, and it was like something in me had broken. This woman meant nothing to me, and yet I felt so utterly distraught just seeing her so hurt. I care for Caroline, I realized, my eyes widening. I care for her deeply.
This care hadn't always beat in my chest, though. There was a time when I swore to hold nothing but contempt toward her in my heart.
I had always managed to convince myself that I hated Caroline and her father with a passion. I swore to myself that I wouldn't garner any affection towards Caroline. There were dangers to letting myself get attached. Above all, the target of my revenge was her wretched father.
However, I was enraged just seeing her suffering so greatly, and I promised that her attacker would feel the same pain she did, tenfold.
But perhaps I was the one who hurt her most. Our seemingly harmonious life had been shattered since that fateful day the day Sophia came back and we met on that dreary afternoon.
We went out for a few drinks, bonding and catching up with one another's crazy lives. Even though I had sworn myself to Caroline at the time, I couldn't deny that Sophia was just as gorgeous as when I'd last seen her. Eventually, it was time to approach the elephant in the room, and so I carefully asked her why she had left.
"I have my reasons," she said simply, but she never went any further than that.
"There must be more than that," I insisted, trying to wring the truth from her.
Tears pricked her eyes and her delicate bottom lip quivered. "William, I don't want to talk about it! I've been suffering greatly since I left. I struggle to keep a job, I can barely pay for my apartment, and I've lost all hope in my dream of photography."
She sniffled, giving me a sorrowful look. "And the worst of all? I still love you."
Sympathy rang in my heart and I could barely keep the same words from leaving my mouth.
"Listen, Sophia... I'm married," I calmly interrupted, my expression twisted with remorse. We can't be together."
"That's okay," she said in return, her eyes hopeful. "I'm willing to wait for you.'
((
Had I been in my right mind, I would have rejected her. It wasn't fair to her to have to endlessly wait on a married man, and while I had my contempt for Caroline, actually hurting Chapter 0064
my
wife was a step too far. Her manipulative father was my real target, after all. Being cheated on was awful, and I didn't want to do things like that to her.
Blame it on cowardice, but I never ended up refusing Sophia's advances. I was too overcome with the guilt I felt towards her and her unfortunate situation.
Then, one fateful day, as we were going out for drinks again, Sophia had drunk way past her limits. We got into a casual conversation about her life, and that's when she started sobbing uncontrollably. "I'm so unhappy, William!" she cried, openly sobbing into her hands. "The memories haunt me every day!"
In her drunken state, she never specified what she meant, but I logically assumed she was talking about the cruel acts of Caroline's father.
I lent an ear as I drove her home, pangs of sympathy running through me as I listened to her plight, All I could do was tell her I was there for her, but she barely responded to my words of comfort.
Upon arriving at her home, she turned to me with a hopeful smile and said, "Come inside with me, William. Please?"
Refusal tugged at my lips since Caroline was lovingly waiting for me at home, but when Sophia began to sob again, I relented.
I'll only be here until she's stable enough to get some rest, I thought, but I was only lying to myself.
That's when events truly spiraled out of control. She forced a kiss onto me, and that was when I lost my mind. We made love and I, ashamedly, cheated on my wife. When I groggily woke up the next morning with Sophia sleeping beside me, I felt nothing but remorse. Afterwards, I endeavored to avoid Sophia with every fiber of my being, but she was a clever woman. She always seemed to mysteriously appear in places I frequented often, and there wasn't a week that would go by where I wouldn't see her at least once.
Then she gave me the news that forever changed my fate from that moment onwards. Those two little words, "I'm pregnant", were like an anvil in my stomach.
Unable to escape my love for her, Sophia and I started a secret relationship for about half a year, until the day she gave me an ultimatum.
"Me or Caroline?" she demanded. "Who do you choose? You can't have us both."
