Chapter 0074

Caroline's POV:

"What is this?" I whispered into the dimly lit empty room. My eyes strained to make out the fine details of the old photo, but frustratingly, the marker was only getting in the way. One thing was for certain, though: the two people in the photo were most certainly Thomas West and Sara Anderson.

It dawned on me then that the issues that plagued William and I were far deeper than I'd originally suspected. Was Sophia just a catalyst? Perhaps there laid a far greater secret behind William's inexplicable hatred for my father.

My dad never once mentioned William's mother to me, though. If they were good friends, surely he would have brought her up more than a few times, right? Yet whenever I saw these two supposed friends together, they were only ever proper (even a bit stuffy) with one another. By all means, they appeared to be perfectly professional business partners.

Mrs. Anderson had always been a pleasant fixture in my life ever since she and my father joined together in their business ventures. Our families were so close we practically melded

into one big family. Was that all a lie? Or was there something more to it?

"There has to be something here," I murmured to myself, coming back to the laptop and quickly searching Sara's name alongside Thomas. Unfortunately, it provided no clues, leaving me in the dark.

I then threw open drawers and rummaged through shelves for more context, but nothing substantial made itself known. Anger boiled within me at the mystery of it all. What could this picture mean?

A cry of frustration nearly tore its way past my throat as I struggled not to throw away the strange photo in my anger. I froze like a statue, however, when something shuffled nearby. My temper immediately cooled and I slapped a hand over my mouth at the sound of a footstep nearby.

"Caroline?" I heard William call out. Was he searching for me? He couldn't find me in his study! It would break all the trust he had in me in an instant. I rushed to close the laptop and shut all the drawers and cabinets as quickly as possible, praying that he wouldn't come in on a whim to find me.

The door handle wobbled, and with little time to spare, I hid myself inside one of the empty cabinets. I heard the door creak open, and through a crack in the cabinet door, I observed the light from the hallway flood in. A couple heavy footsteps sounded dangerously close to the cabinet I was hidden in. So close was he that I could hear his deep breaths.

My heart pounded like a drum in my chest and I kept a hand clamped down over my mouth in fear that he would hear me breathe. The photo of our parents was kept close to my chest, as though it were something precious to me.

What would happen if he found me with it? Surely he would explode in a fit of rage. From the prominent X over the photo, it was clear William held a large amount of disdain for the image.

After a moment of deafening quiet, William spoke under his breath, "She must've just gone to the bathroom." To my utter relief, William turned and left the room, his heavy footsteps fading away as the door closed with a click.

I patiently waited until the footsteps were gone entirely before crawling out from the cabinet, gasping in a lungful of air. I got up on shaking legs, giving one last cursory glance around the room in search of clues. None were to be found, and so I was stuck with this mysterious photo. I closely examined the joyous smile on Sara Anderson's face, and with that, memories were sparked in my mind.

I vividly recalled my and William's wedding day. It was one of the best days of my life and so many tears were shed on my end, but when my memories turned to Sara, I clearly

remembered the absence of a smile on her face. Joy evaded her that day, and the question of why had worried me endlessly.

Memories of her most recent birthday party also returned to haunt me. She had greeted me so politely, and yet she hardly seemed phased by the presence of Sophia and her lovechild with William.

The usual calm attitude and elegance she displayed that day dispelled all doubts in my mind. Where I had once thought she was just trying to be decent in the presence of a clearly uncomfortable situation, I now knew she had tacitly supported William's despicable deeds. A sudden startling thought struck me just then. My father and Sara had seemingly been so close that I couldn't help the terrible speculation that settled in my heart. Was it possible that my father and Sara had something... more?

""Mr. William!"

My thoughts were shattered by the anxious cries of the nanny.

"Mr. William, come quick! George is having an allergic reaction!"

My heart sank to the pit of my stomach. Was George in danger? With worry pumping through my veins, I put the photo back and snuck out of the study to follow the nanny's shrieks.
