Blurred Lines 1: CHASE -
Chapter 9
-Chase
F*cking beautiful No one should look this stunning with swollen eyes and puffy cheeks.
"Thank you," she said, holding her cup of chamomile tea above her lap. She sat a hand stretched away from me on the couch I poured myself a glass of whiskey. My intuition told me I would need one for whatever story she was about to say. I was too stunned when I saw her in my office earlier to notice the sadness in her eyes. They were distant. I hated the loneliness that shadowed them.
"I have all night," I teased, draping one arm on the backrest and folding a leg on the couch so I was facing her.
Her little black dress rode dangerously high up her leg, revealing those cr*amy legs I had been thinking about during the entire meeting with Eros. In the club, Eros gave me Monica, her best dancer, but even Monica's perky a's didn't help ease these strange feelings I was having around Sofia.
Maybe I just missed my little Sunshine so much. That's the only reason,' I thought.
Sofia giggled, her puffy eyes crinkling. "It's silly, really. It's nothing important."
"I know you," I said, locking eyes with her as she peered in my direction. "You were never a crier, Sunshine. You're one of the boys, so spill."
Growing up with three brothers and surrounded by their best buddies, Sofia learned to be tough. Because if she wasn't, anyone who made her cry would get a visit from us the next day. The kind that makes them think a hundred times before looking at Sofia again. She learned to control her tears. She learned to fight back against the bullies on her own, just to save her brothers from doing it themselves.
Sofia sighed. "I broke up with my fiance."
"You were engaged?" Those words left a foul taste in my mouth. In my head, she was still my little Sunshine. Mine to protect. But looking at her now as she blinked back the tears clouding her eyes, I realized that this woman was not the fragile little girl I used to spend most of my time with.
"Yep. But not anymore."
"What happened?" My blood was already simmering at the idea of this man who made her cry.
"I found out he got another girl pregnant. That's why I'm here for this job. To get away from him, from everything."
I nearly crushed the glass I was holding. My molars grind. How could someone do that to her? I'm
not a saint. Miles away from being one. I am a player myself, but all the women I've been with know what they are getting into. No strings attached, and it has to be consensual.
"How long have you been together?" Honestly, I don't want to talk about that f*ck head anymore. He doesn't deserve Sofia, but she needs to get this out of her system. It's the only way she could deal with this, by facing it and by crying it out. "We've been together for two years and engaged for one."
I bit back the curse ready to dribble out of my mouth. Just a few words about her ex-fiance, and I would give everything just to teach him a lesson.
I didn't want to tell her I was sorry. Most people in my shoes would say that. Her fiance probably said that to her already, and she needed more than an apology.
"You know the worst part?" she continued. "When I found out everything, he gave me an ultimatum. Stay, or, he'd marry this other woman. I left, of course!" she laughed bitterly. "Now they are getting married in a month."
She placed the tea down on the coffee table, reached for the box of tissue, and dabbed her cheeks. "These tears just won't stop falling!" she groaned.
My heart breaks seeing Sofia like this. I wanted to reach for her, wipe her tears, and give her comfort, but that had never been us. She's too proud for those kinds of gestures. It would only make her feel lonelier than she already was. Not speaking to Sofia for ten years made me reconsider all my actions. I stood up, headed to the kitchen, and grabbed a pint of chocolate ice cream and a spoon.
Sofia was still dabbing her cheeks dry with a tissue when I returned. She stared at what I was holding, sniffing.
"God," she chuckled, shaking her head.
"What?" I plonked down beside her, a little closer than before.
She grabbed everything I was holding, scooping the sweet treat. She moaned. The sound sent tingles all over my body. My co*k stirred awake and dirty thoughts swirled in my head.
I clenched my fist. Why is it that every time I am with her, my mind can't seem to control my body's urge to have a taste of her? Now my mind is joining the discord with these indecent thoughts.
I watched her take another spoonful, fuil lips closing down on the silver spoon. She licked the back of it. I shifted in my seat, my c*ck coming alive like it had been caressed by her pink tongue. I bet she tastes sweeter than that ice cream.
Sofia glanced at me, green eyes alight playfully. "You know, I actually thought I was dreaming everything. The break-up, me here in Rio and you. This?" She raised the ice cream pint. "This is the evidence that I am not dreaming. You are really here, sitting beside me, listening to my sad love story."
"I could say the same." I sn"tched the pint and spoon from her
"Hey!" she protested, aiming to sn*tch the ice cream back. "I thought that was mine." She stuck out her lower lip
I gaze at her sideways. "It is." I stared at her, taking a huge spoonful of the ice cream. "What are you gonna do about it?"
She gnawed her lip, memories flooding her head. She remembered how we used to fight over her food, how I used to steal the food on her plate, whatever it is she was eating. When she's sad, Sofia tends to lean on stress eating, a habit that has been hard to break. She was a chubby kid and I thought of stealing her food to keep her from gaining more weight.
She slumped back on her seat, too lazy to steal her ice cream back.
"Don't pout, Sunshine... here," I offered her the ice cream. She accepted with a smile, the most genuine I had seen on her.
Sitting comfortably, she took another spoonful. "I remember us."
She scooted closer and leaned her head on my shoulder. What she said next left me speechless. "I missed you, Chase."
