Chapter 274 We’re Not Enemies
"Yes," said Marshall, "why haven't you accepted my friend request?"
Katherine was almost amused. "Why should I? You deleted me, and now you're trying to friend me back. What the hell are you up to?"
Marshall exhaled, sounding resigned. "I was inconsiderate when I did that. I thought we'd have nothing to do with each other from then on, but..."
"Okay," said Katherine, interrupting him, "and we won't indeed have anything to do with each other, so there's no need for us to re-friend on a chatting app."
That was when Marshall realized how good Katherine was at verbal fights. She also seemed to know exactly the sort of attitude that would upset someone. With that nonchalant tone, her words really kind of stung him. No wonder Mrs. Grant would lose it just a few sentences into a quarrel with her.
Marshall turned quiet, and so did Katherine. Marshall used to be the patient one, but not anymore.
Marshall was the first to speak. "Katherine, we're not enemies."
Marshall couldn't see Katherine's face, so she made her tone as innocent as possible. "And I'm not treating you as an enemy, either."
Smiling faintly, she added, "I'm grateful for everything you've done for me, Marshall, but we really should stop contacting each other. I'm not treating you as my enemy; I simply want to treat you as a stranger." Marshall was lost for words. He had actually had the same thought as Katherine a long time ago, but the thing was that people could change their mind. As for when he changed his mind exactly, he couldn't tell, either.
But Katherine didn't want to hear about it. She knew that something was better left unsaid.
So instead she said, "If you don't have anything else to say, I'm going to hang up now."
And hang up she did, without giving Marshall any time to react.
Putting down her phone, Katherine let out a sigh of relief. She really felt lighter after getting all this out.
Dusk was approaching after he nap. Katherine felt hungry, but she didn't feel like moving. So she fetched her phone again, not to order takeout, but to call Kyle.
Kyle picked up immediately, "Hello, little Kathy."
"Hmm, I'm hungry," said Katherine, "can you come over and bring me some food?"
"Is that all you call me for?" grumbled Kyle, "to get food? Why don't you just get takeout?"
"Hey!" retorted Katherine, raising her voice, "do you realize that I'm kind of a celebrity now? And I need to decrease my exposure. So I'm appointing you as my agent. Now get your ass here quickly with the food!"
Kyle, who was particularly patient with Katherine, readily accepted the task. "I'm coming over right away. And you should stop yelling. You really startled me just now."
Katherine lay back down after hanging up.
Kyle didn't come over quickly, and when he finally showed up, he wasn't alone - he was accompanied by Hector, in fact.
As Kyle explained, he was in the vicinity of Bennett & Co. as Hector was getting off work, so he brought Hector along.
What a lame excuse. Bennett & Co. was decidedly not along Kyle's drive from his club to Katherine's place, so Kyle would have had to make quite a detour if he wanted to stop by Hector's office.
But Katherine didn't mind either way. Setting down what Kyle brought over on the table, she said, "Alright, let's eat! I'm starving."
Kyle preferred eating with a group, so he had brought a lot of food.
As Kyle went into the kitchen to get tableware, he asked Hector. "Do you know what happened to your half-siblings in the end?"
That reminded Katherine of the story Kyle had told her in the afternoon, which she had forgotten about due to starvation.
Hector shook his head. "I don't really know, and I didn't ask. But David came into the office before I got off work, but Patrick and Alexis didn't, so I'm assuming they were grounded at home." Snickering, Kyle commented, "If your old man decides to kick those two assholes out of the company because of this, he'll earn at least some of my respect."
Shaking his head again, Hector said, "I don't think he will."
Because Ariel Kingsey would be there to beg for forgiveness, and Kevin was most likely to grant it to them after some scolding.
And Kyle didn't mind. "But there will be one wrongdoing after another after another. There is going to be something that infuriates your old man so much he decides not to let it go."
Hector smiled slightly without speaking.
After a while, Katherine asked, "Do you guys think I should defend Marshall online to get the people off his back? You know, for the sake of our marriage that used to be?"
Which sounded to Kyle like a bad reason for wanting to help Marshall. Nevertheless, Kyle answered, "It's okay for you to help him clarify a few things. Marshall didn't do anything outrageous. What's being said about him is just media speculation."
"So what should I say?" asked Katherine, her lips pursed, "I don't want to say the wrong thing and get people hounding me."
"Maybe you should ask Rosalie," suggested Hector, "she'd know how to be thorough in a speech."
Kyle nodded instantly. "Hold on, let me call her about it."
And he took out his phone, dialed Rosalie Haverford's number, and put the phone on speaker.
Rosalie seemed to be occupied on her end, and voices of someone else could be heard.
Kyle was all nice and deferential towards her, as he said smilingly, "Hi Rosalie! Do you want have a minute? I got a question for you."
Rosalie was impatient. "Not now."
And then she hung up.
Embarrassed, Kyle looked up at Hector and Katherine as he laughed nervously. "Rosalie's busy. She's always busy all the time, so it was actually pretty rare that she should pick up."
Hector and Katherine exchanged a look and resumed attacking their food while Kyle put the phone away sheepishly.
They finished the meal in silence. After dinner, Kyle cleaned up the table as Katherine went to sit on the sofa.
Katherine turned on the TV as she said with a smirk, "I'll tell you what, I got into a physical fight with Frances today."
Kyle, who was fitting all the tableware into the dishwasher, rushed out of the kitchen instantly when he heard this. "Who did you fight? Did you win or lose? Who's Frances?"
Looking at Kyle, Katherine answered, "Frances Grant, you know, as in Marshall's mom."
Kyle and Hector were both shocked as they walked over to the sofa.
"What happened? Were you hurt?" asked Hector as he gave her a quick once-over.
Katherine waved her hand no. "I didn't get hurt other than losing some hair; Frances on the other hand was slapped and kicked."
Kyle hissed. "Well done, you!"
Sitting down on the sofa, he said secretively, "I've heard enough stories from her past to know that you don't want to mess with Mrs. Grant." Raising an eyebrow, Katherine asked, "What did you hear?"
Kyle paused to think before he spoke. "Allegedly, like Marshall, Mr. Grant had been engaged to someone other than Mrs. Grant in the very beginning. But then the fiancée changed her mind on the marriage because she fell for somebody else. So Mr. and Mrs. Grant were set up for a blind date, after which they got engaged."
Kyle smacked his lips before continuing, "But at some point during Marshall's teenage years, the fiancée from the past got divorced for whatever reason and realized how good she had it with Mr. Grant. So she threw herself at him knowing full well that he had a family."
Hector sat down next to Katherine, and he was so close to her that he could see her profile very clearly. Leaning into Katherine's side intuitively, Hector also listened with keen interest. Thus, from some particular angle, the way Katherine had her back against Hector could be interpreted as if she were nestling in his embrace.☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐
