CEO Proposed to His Ex-wife 99 Times
Chapter 273 What’s Wrong with this Dude?

When he realized what Lucas was saying, Marshall's initial frown turned into ire.

Lucas, however, kept gazing at him with a relaxed smile.

Watching Marshall stop in his tracks, Clara was surprised. "What's wrong, Marshall?"

"Nothing," answered Marshall as he looked away from Lucas and walked towards the elevators with Clara by his side.

An elevator stopped as they were waiting, and out came a couple of employees who, after greeting the Grants, couldn't help sneering sarcastically upon seeing Clara. Clara clocked that, of course, but she had to let it slide without any reaction. The online chatters were much more distressing than these people's silent judgment, but she had no choice but to stomach all of them.

Marshall followed Mr. Grant as the older gentleman escorted the Hendersons to the front door of the building. Clara watched Marshall before she got into the car, but Marshall didn't reciprocate her gaze, looking across the street instead.

There were flashlights from across the street.

Marshall had spotted the paparazzi hiding inside a store the minute he walked out of the lobby, but he didn't mind getting his photographs taken since there was nothing sneaky going on. Besides, the paps were a very curious group of people, and they would disturb Katherine if they couldn't get a scoop from him and Clara.

Marshall didn't want them anywhere near Katherine. She was inexperienced and irritable, so a confrontation was highly likely if she got annoyed.

Sighing quietly, Marshall looked back at Clara, who pursed her lips and bit down on the words she had intended to say.

Mr. Grant and Marshall walked into the office building after the Hendersons drove away.

Mr. Grant spoke first. "Maybe talk to Katherine some other time. If it weren't for your mother's meddling, it could have been an easy negotiation."

But Katherine might get tired of anything that had to do with the Grants after the fight initiated by Mrs. Grant. It might be much harder to ask her for help now.

Marshall didn't speak until they were in the elevator. "I'll talk to Katherine later. She's actually quite a reasonable person."

"Yeah," agreed Mr. Grant, adding, "pay no attention to your mother just yet. She needs to be taken down a peg. We've been indulgent on her over the years, so much so that she's made no progress at all. I just don't know what she's thinking all day."

Marshall stared at the elevator screen, watching the number go up silently with a frown. He agreed with his father.

On the other hand, Katherine, lying in bed, was only stirred out of her foggy sleep by a call from Kyle.

Grabbing her phone, Katherine made sure it was from someone she knew before she picked up. "Kyle."

Presumably bored, Kyle asked, "You up? Where are you? Do you want to come over?"

"No," answered Katherine, turning to one side, "I'm at home, sleeping."

Kyle asked. "I thought so too. Well, wake up and let me tell you something interesting."

Blinking, Katherine asked, "Something interesting? What can be more interesting than what I'm going through right now?"

"But it's true! It's about the two Bennett."

Katherine paused before sitting up slowly. "Patrick and Alexis?"

"Right," replied Kyle, getting excited, "do you remember getting wounded at the Bennett residence? Well, your guy..."

And Kyle stopped abruptly, knowing he'd misspoken. Barking a hollow laugh, he said, "Your ex-husband Marshall, possibly wanting to avenge you, had someone look into Patrick and Alexis. Turns out that these two weasels wanted to have Bennett & Co. all to themselves, so they had a number of personal liaisons with the company's top management and showered them with bribes and such. They also made half a dozen private investments in the name of the company, which means they'll have all the money if they make a profit, and let the company take the hit if they don't. These damn ogres. Do you want to beat them to death or what?"

"And all of this comes from Marshall's guy?" asked Katherine.

"Yes," replied Kyle with a sigh. "I think he was angry with Alexis for hurting you that day and wanted revenge. But now with his own PR ordeal, he can't really do much on this front, so he handed all the evidence over to me. It actually doesn't matter either way, for I can utilize these bits of information just as easily. Now, I don't want to get you involved what with you getting all this media attention, so I'll simply deal with those two in the name of avenging Hex."

Katherine mused before asking, "But didn't the Bennetts already know what Patrick and Alexis were doing? They should, right?"

Because even if Kevin and Ariel didn't know about it, David Bennett should have detected something wrong long ago as the de facto leader of the company. He couldn't have failed to notice all these opportunistic wrongdoings by someone else.

Kyle huffed. "I think he already knows. But he's such a smart guy, actually, and doesn't want to challenge Ariel and her kids even though he's got nothing but contempt for her."

But Kyle didn't actually mind. "Well, I'll do David a solid and be the guy to expose Patrick and Alexis. I don't care, and I ain't afraid of anyone."

Katherine laughed. "You ain't afraid of Rosalie, either?"

Upon hearing that name, young Mr. Haverford, who had acted all dauntless the second before, went immediately quiet and motionless.

He was unafraid of anyone but Rosalie Haverford. As he was going up, his other three sisters doted on him, but not Rosalie. If Rosalie hit him, she really hit him, as if she was aiming for some involuntary manslaughter.

With Kyle silent, Katherine dropped the banter and asked, "What's the situation with the Bennetts?"

Coughing slightly, Kyle answered seriously, "I just talked to Hex, who's still in his office, but Patrick, Alexis, and David have all been summoned home - at Kevin's request, I think. But that guy's such a pacifist that I don't think he's going to hand out severe punishments to anyone."

"Well then," inquired Katherine, "didn't you guys plan all this out in vain?"

"Not exactly," Kyle remarked, "I've still got a few cards up my sleeve with those two weasels. If Kevin lets them off the hook this time, I'll expose something else. If they're forgiven the next time, I'll expose another. However tolerant Kevin Bennett is, he is bound to lose that good temperament of his when he keeps getting bad news."

"What a devious guy you are," joked Katherine.

As she spoke, the phone buzzed with a notification. Opening the chatting app, Katherine laughed.

It was Marshall sending her a friend request.

What was wrong with this dude? He deleted her from his friend list in the first place, and now he had the audacity to try to friend her back? Katherine ignored it and resumed talking about the Bennetts with Kyle. But before they could go on, she received another call - from Marshall.

Hesitant, Katherine stared at the phone for a good while before telling Kyle she was busy. Kyle complained and yelled as Katherine hung up on him. As she picked up Marshall's call, she sounded less impatient than before. "What's wrong?"☐☐☐☐☐☐☐
