Lydia stopped in her tracks and turned to Quincy, disbelief flooding her eyes. She understood every word he said, but hearing them strung together like that felt utterly surreal. "So, you're telling me," she said slowly, "that your mother drugged you with that kind of drug?"

"Yes." Quincy nodded, though saying it out loud made him feel deeply humiliated.

Still, he had to tell her the truth. Regardless of whether they ended up divorcing or not, he couldn't let Lydia believe he was some heartless player messing around with other women's feelings.

"I can't believe you're telling me the truth. I... I..." Lydia's voice trembled, leaving her at a loss for words. Tears brimmed in her eyes until they spilled over, leaving a faint trail down her cheeks.

Her mind drifted to the child they had lost so suddenly. She had found it strange at the time. Everything had been fine, and her health had been good. But as soon as Mrs. Perez arrived to 'help,' things had taken a turn, and she had miscarried.

Part of her had suspected her mother-in-law, but another part had felt ashamed of even thinking it. After all, how could a grandmother possibly harm her own grandchild?

Hearing Quincy's words now, she couldn't help but feel foolish. Mrs. Perez was willing to go to any lengths to push them apart, even to the point of drugging her own son. If she was capable of that, what wouldn't she do? Evidence didn't even matter to her anymore. Lydia shook Quincy's hand off hers.

"Even if it was your mother who

drugged you what difference does it

make?" she said, her tone laced with bitterness. "I saw you two together, Quincy. You don't have to tell me nothing happened, because even if it didn't happen then, that doesn't

mean it won't happen someday."

"Lydia, do you not trust me?" Quincy's face twisted in anguish.

"It's not you I don't trust," she replied, shaking her head. "I don't trust your mother. My mom told me before we got married that love is between two people, but marriage involves two families. I didn't understand it then, but I do now."

"All that talk about true love conquering all, maybe it's good for teenagers to believe that. But at my age, I shouldn't be so naive," Lydia thought.

Mrs. Perez had made it clear she

didn't approve of Lydia, going so far

as to find countless ways to tear them apart, even when Lydia was pregnant. Instead of accepting her as a daughter-in-law for the sake of the baby, she had been determined todrive them both out of Quincy's life. How tragic.

Lydia didn't see herself as a bad person, so how did things end up like this? Looking back, the problem had been choosing the wrong person to love. Quincy's voice broke through her thoughts. "But Lydia, is it fair to judge me solely based on my mother's actions? Isn't that a little harsh?"

Lydia nodded. "You're right, it isn't

fair. But staying with you and putting

up with your mother's endless criticism wouldn't be fair to me

in

either. Let's just end things on good terms, Quincy. Like I said, I'll see you at the courthouse on Monday."

Eugene watched from nearby, relieved. He had worried that Quincy's words might sway Lydia back, but fortunately, she stood her ground.
