Jamie closed her eyes briefly, sinking further into despair. She didn't even notice when Ben had left the room. Her thoughts were scattered, her mind drifting in and out of focus.

Though she wanted to leave the hospital, she was constantly watched, making it impossible. By afternoon, a nurse came in to change her dressing.

Jamie glanced up absentmindedly. "It's fine. I don't need it."

"This is under Dr. Lawson's direct orders," the nurse replied gently but firmly. "I can't afford to cut corners. Since you're still admitted, please cooperate."

Jamie lifted her gaze slightly, her tone subdued. "I'd like to get some fresh air."

"Of course, once we're done changing your dressing, I can take you outside. Just make sure not to strain your muscles," the nurse said patiently.

The weather was exceptionally pleasant that day. As she sat in the wheelchair outside, Jamie made several calls to Winnie. The phone was still off, as if Winnie had made up her mind to disappear completely from her world. The thought sent a chilling wave through Jamie. Nearby, a group of nurses walked by, chatting.

"Why hasn't Dr. Lawson shown up today?"

"No idea. Maybe he took the day off?"

"That's odd. He never takes days off, and he's been hovering around the patient rooms these past few days. This doesn't seem like him."

"True. Dr. Lawson is the heartthrob of the hospital. Miss him for a day, and it feels like something's missing!" one nurse teased.

Another laughed. "Can't deny it! Seeing a handsome face really makes work easier."

Their lighthearted banter drifted past Jamie, but something about their words caught her attention.

"When did Dr. Lawson disappear?" she asked the nurse assisting her.

"This morning, I think. He mentioned needing to step out, but he hasn't come back yet. Maybe something came up. He hasn't taken a break in ages, so I'm sure he deserves it," the nurse replied while pushing Jamie toward a shaded spot under a large tree. Jamie scanned the enclosed courtyard, noting the tall fence. In her injured state, escape seemed nearly impossible.

At the law firm, a knock on the door pulled Ben from his thoughts. "Come in," he said calmly.

The assistant entered briskly, nodding. "That man has been restrained and is being temporarily held under close watch. There's no chance of escape."

Ben responded with a cool acknowledgment. "Good work."

The assistant hesitated briefly. "About that man..."

"Release him after Jamie is discharged," Ben instructed, his sharp features set in a cold expression. "For now, he's just an eyesore."

Understanding the directive, the

assistant nodded. Just as he was about to leave, his phone buzzed. Answering it, his expression shifted dramatically. After a brief exchange, he turned back to Ben, his tone cautious.

"He seems to know it was your doing and insists on meeting with you."

Ben never gave such trivial matters much thought. Even if that man knew the truth, there was nothing he could do without evidence. "Keep him detained," Ben instructed, his tone indifferent.

His mind raced with the countless

events of late, all piling up and complicating an already tangled.

situation. The distance between him

and Jamie seemed insurmountable.

He narrowed his eyes and the assistant, perceptive of his boss's mood, wisely refrained from speaking further and quietly exited the office.

Left alone, Ben leaned back in his

chair, his fingers rhythmically

whir of conflicting emotions and

The abrupt ring of the phone cut through the silence, pulling him from his thoughts. He reached for his phone, his voice steady and guarded. "Hello. Who is this?"
