Jamie's expression shifted almost imperceptibly as she asked, "Charlie, do you like that Uncle Ben a lot?"

"I do! He brings me lots of stuff, and I like that grandma too."

"I see."

Jamie looked at Charlie who was oblivious to the truth that the "Uncle Ben" he adored was actually the father he had always longed for. Her chest tightened with an uncomfortable heaviness.

For a moment, doubt crept in. Had she made the right choice back then, hiding the truth and keeping Ben and the Lucas family in the dark?

Maybe if she hadn't, Charlie wouldn't have grown up without a father in his life.

Charlie suddenly stopped, his face lighting up with joy as he spotted someone. Letting go of her hand, he ran ahead.

"Uncle Ben!" he shouted, launching himself into Ben's arms.

Ben crouched down to scoop him up. The usually reserved man, known for his detached demeanor, softened visibly in Charlie's presence, even smiling.

"I haven't visited in a couple of days. Were you good?"

"I was! And Mom's taking me out to play today. Uncle Ben, can you come too?"

Charlie's eager eyes turned to Jamie, who snapped out of her daze. She reached over and pinched Charlie's chubby cheek, her tone playful. "You little rascal, you forget all about me the moment you see your Uncle Ben." ""No, I didn't!" Charlie giggled, grabbing her hand.

Jamie's gaze softened as she smiled at him.

Ben watched the exchange quietly for a moment before turning to Jamie. "Let's get going. It's getting late."

Jamie carried Charlie into the car. Since he insisted on sitting next to her, she didn't take the passenger seat.

Ben had arranged for a driver and sat with them in the back, with Charlie in the middle.

The physical barrier between them offered Jamie some relief. She had grown even more resistant to Ben after Winnie's death.

What used to be a simple preference

for independence had evolved into a firm resolve to sever any ties with him. In her mind, Ben belonged to

her late sister now, and she refused to step into that space.

Ben noticed her distant demeanor, his gaze darkening. Even as he held Charlie's hand, his mind seemed elsewhere.

Fifteen minutes later, the car pulled up to the amusement park.

The usual bustling crowds were absent, replaced by a tranquil silence. Only a few staff members stood at the entrance, waiting for them. With the park rented out entirely, there was no need for tickets. Ben simply had his face scanned, and they were in.

One of the staff handed Charlie a cotton candy shaped like a bunny.

"Wow! It's so big!" Charlie exclaimed in awe.

Jamie glanced at the oversized treat and had to admit it was impressive.

Holding the cotton candy in one hand and Jamie's hand in the other, Charlie bounced happily into the park.

Every ride and attraction was operational, with staff stationed nearby to ensure safety.

For a child with congenital heart disease, this was Charlie's first time at an amusement park. His excitement and curiosity were evident as he darted around taking everything in.

He stopped near a roller coaster and pointed at it. "Mom, is that a roller coaster? I've seen it on TV!"

Jamie's heart ached at his enthusiasm. "Yes, it is, but you can't ride it just yet. How about the carousel instead? It's fun too."

Although Charlie's condition had stabilized, roller coasters and other high-intensity rides were still out of the question.

Charlie looked disappointed but nodded obediently. "I won't ride it. I was just asking."

Then he ran off to explore another area.

With Charlie brimming with energy, Jamie couldn't follow him everywhere: Instead, she kept him within her line of sight, reminding him not to touch anything he shouldn't. For now, that would have to be enough.
