CEO's Tears Over Pregnancy Test Discovery -
Chapter 1598
Jamie reluctantly suppressed her thoughts and focused on resolving immediate concerns. Her first priority was arranging a caregiver for Mrs. Lopez at the hospital. After ensuring Mrs. Lopez would be well cared for, she turned her attention to the police station. The instigator of the old district riot, Daniel Lopez, was still in custody, serving a one-month sentence.
Back at the company, Jamie sought out Ben.
Before he could say a word, she launched into her thoughts. "I believe Daniel is being manipulated by someone behind the scenes."
Daniel, the ringleader, had incited most of the others to cause trouble.
Ben raised an eyebrow but remained silent. It was obvious he shared the same suspicion. The sequence of events seemed far too deliberate.
The dissatisfaction of the holdouts, Mrs. Lopez's sudden illness, and the escalation of the conflict all felt perfectly orchestrated. It was as if everything was being guided by an unseen hand.
Jamie succinctly relayed what she had learned during her visit to the hospital and brought the conversation back to Daniel.
"We should check his recent transactions. If there's an unexplained inflow of funds, we'll have our answer."
"It's already been checked," Ben replied, frowning.
Jamie immediately sensed that the news wasn't good.
Sure enough, Ben handed over a neatly organized file. "This is everything we have on Daniel. His accounts were reviewed, and there's been no unusual activity."
Jamie skimmed the documents.
The report painted a clear picture. Daniel was an unemployed freeloader, living off his elderly mother. His bank accounts showed no salary deposits, only large, sporadic withdrawals, mostly losses from gambling. Jamie set the file down, disbelief etched across her face. "Mrs. Lopez supports him, and he doesn't even visit her when she's sick?"
In that moment, she understood.
It was clear why the nurse had been so angry. If it had been her, she would have been furious too.
It was impossible not to think of her own parents. What if they were treated this way?
Ben's voice interrupted her thoughts. "It only proves the person behind this is very cautious." A cold glint flickered in his eyes. Jamie paused, then offered a suggestion. "What if we approach it from a different angle?"
There were eight holdout families in the old district. While the number of households didn't seem significant, the total number of people added up to dozens.
The most challenging part was that forceful action wasn't an option.
"One of the families didn't get detained that day. I'll go check on them," she suggested.
"No," Ben said firmly, rejecting the idea without hesitation.
Jamie frowned, puzzled by his response. "It's the most practical approach. If we keep stalling, this project will drag on indefinitely."
She understood how eager Ben was to wrap up this project and step away from Lucas Corporation. She wanted to help in any way she could.
Ben's expression tightened, his
brows furrowing deeply. His face was pale, the lingering effects of his illness evident despite his efforts to appear unaffected.
Jamie's irritation dissolved instantly. Her tone softened. "Are you feeling alright?" "I'm fine. But you're not going, and that's final." His voice brooked no argument.
He closed his eyes, and his mind replayed the scene from that day. If he hadn't arrived in time, she would have been surrounded by those people, helpless and vulnerable.
How could he possibly let her take such a risk again?
When Jamie tried to push her case further, Ben firmly dismissed her, using the excuse that she didn't need to work today and should go home to rest.
Of course, she had no intention of simply going back.
