Wilfred's gaze turned meaningful. "This friend of yours, he wouldn't happen to be named Ben Lucas and work as a lawyer, would he?" Jamie averted her eyes, feeling caught.

It was awkward to have him guess correctly, but thankfully, Wilfred didn't press further. He simply gave her the advice she needed and added a warning. "Tell Ben to tone down his workaholic tendencies. If he keeps pushing like this, even the best doctors won't be able to save him." After parting ways with Wilfred, Jamie headed to the hospital room.

The patient, Mrs. Lopez, was sixty-five years old.

At her age, suffering from heart disease was highly dangerous. One wrong move could lead to a heart attack, which was why Lucas Corporation had gone to great lengths to ensure her care. They had arranged for the best room and covered her medical expenses. Given these efforts, Jamie couldn't help but feel that the man causing such chaos earlier was unbelievably ungrateful.

"I'm here to see Mrs. Lopez. Has her family come to visit her recently?" Jamie asked the nurse she encountered.

The nurse paused, then assumed Jamie was a caretaker hired by the family. "Oh, you must be the caregiver they finally hired. If that's the case, please contact her family. It's been far too long since they've come by. No matter the situation, it's their mother. Leaving her like this is inexcusable."

Jamie quickly corrected her. "I'm not a caregiver. I'm here to check on her behalf as part of my work."

The nurse looked embarrassed. "Sorry about the mix-up. I assumed you were family."

Jamie picked up on the nurse's tone and probed further. "You mentioned her family hasn't been around much. But from what I've heard, her son seems quite concerned about her condition."

The nurse scoffed, visibly annoyed. "Concerned? If he cared, he wouldn't have stayed away for so long after admitting her. That man's nothing but an ungrateful brat."

As Jamie continued the conversation, she learned some unsettling truths.

The son, who had publicly and loudly demanded justice for his mother, had only visited her once, on the day she was admitted. Since then, he hadn't returned.

Mrs. Lopez, unable to get out of bed and often in a semi-conscious state, had no one to look after her. The nurses occasionally stepped in to help, but they were already overworked and couldn't do much.

"He was supposed to arrange for a caregiver weeks ago," the nurse explained, exasperated. "I thought Mrs. Lopez might finally get proper care. But no one ever showed up."

"What about Mrs. Lopez herself?" Jamie asked softly.

The nurse sighed, glancing at the room with a tinge of pity. "The poor woman's mind isn't as sharp anymore. She spends most of her days muttering her son's name. It's heartbreaking." en FindNovel

Jamie's chest tightened at the image.

After the nurse left, she stepped into the room.

As described, Mrs. Lopez lay frail on the bed, murmuring her son's name over and over, her voice a whisper of longing and pain.

Jamie clenched her fists, anger bubbling beneath her skin.

This was no different from

abandoning an elderly parent. The man who had yelled and threatened in the old district, claiming to fight for his mother's justice, had left her here to wither alone.

Fuming, Jamie stormed out of the room and ran into the assistant.

"Miss Lewis, are you alright? You don't look so good," he asked, concerned. "I'm fine," she replied curtly. "I've just finished visiting Mrs. Lopez." The assistant sighed. "I spoke to the hospital staff as well." "And?" Jamie pressed, her tone hard.

"The situation isn't looking good," he admitted. "Mrs. Lopez is too old and frail for a heart bypass. The surgery would be high-risk, and the doctors are hesitant to proceed."

His frustration was palpable. This project had already faced numerous delays and challenges, but this latest development could be catastrophic.

"If something happens to Mrs. Lopez mid-project," he continued, "the media will tear us apart. I can already see the headlines."

Jamie's expression shifted, her eyes gleaming with thought.
