It seemed like someone had upset Ben, leaving him in a sour mood, and now the assistant was left to smooth things over.

Jamie played along, cooperating seamlessly. Gradually, the conversation at their table became lively, with everyone shedding their initial stiffness.

Just as the atmosphere lightened, someone casually asked, "Jamie, have you ever thought about getting married?"

Ben's icy glare shot toward the speaker, sending a chill down their spine. The assistant's heart practically jumped out of his chest.

Thankfully, Jamie deflected the question effortlessly. "If I meet the right person, maybe. But for now, I haven't given it much thought."

The food soon arrived, shifting the focus.

Everyone ate and drank their fill before heading home. Many had one drink too many and were swaying unsteadily. The assistant took charge, making sure they were all sent home safely. Jamie, who had only sipped two glasses, was mostly fine, though her cheeks were flushed pink.

"Jamie, you'll be fine getting home on your own, right? If so, I'll head out." The assistant was carrying a drunken colleague on his back, who smacked him absentmindedly.

Jamie couldn't help but feel sorry for him and didn't want to make things harder. "Go ahead, I can get a cab myself."

"Alright then, I'll leave it to you."

The assistant hurried off. He wasn't remotely worried about Jamie's safety. With Ben watching over her, how could anything happen?

Once everyone else had left, it was just the two of them.

Ben grabbed Jamie's bag with ease, his movements natural and matter-of-fact. "I'll drive you home. Let's go."

Jamie instinctively reached for her bag but, seeing his unyielding demeanor, decided against arguing. It wasn't worth the trouble.

Seated in the backseat of the car, Jamie leaned back, the delayed effects of the alcohol starting to hit her. She felt light-headed and slightly dizzy.

Ben noticed the prolonged silence and glanced over. She was leaning on one side, her eyes closed, breathing evenly. She looked as though she had fallen asleep.

"Mr. Lucas, there's a bit of traffic ahead," the driver announced, not lowering his voice.

Ben's sharp glare cut through the air. "Keep your voice down. Take another route. Do I really need to teach you this?"

The driver instantly fell silent, not daring to say another word.

Jamie shifted slightly, her posture unstable as she dozed.

Ben adjusted her, gently laying her down so she could rest against him.

Looking down, he could see her long lashes and her lips, slightly parted, their soft red hue glistening faintly.

His gaze darkened as his fingers brushed lightly across her lips.

"Jamie."

She didn't respond.

He tried again, "Jamie."

She stirred slightly, turning to the other side.

Ben chuckled softly, his fingers lingering briefly before pulling back. "Forget it. I won't tease you."

Completely unaware, Jamie

remained in deep sleep, oblivious to the fact that moments earlier, she had narrowly escaped being kissed by someone taking advantage of her vulnerability.

Ben still hadn't mustered the resolve to visit his father in the hospital. His mind was occupied with something else entirely.

The law firm he was affiliated with

had received a complaint,

questioning his dual roles and calling to confirm whether he was working at the corporation

They followed up with a warning.

Jamie learned about it from the assistant.

"How is Ben handling it now?" she asked anxiously.

The assistant sighed, glancing toward the closed office door. "He doesn't want to see anyone. He took a call earlier and then left the office. No one knows where he went."

Realizing the assistant had no additional information, Jamie stopped pressing him.

But if not at the company, where could Ben be?

An idea struck her suddenly. After excusing herself, she quickly hailed a cab to the preschool.

It was still class time, so the grounds were quiet and empty.

From a distance, she immediately spotted a black car parked silently nearby.
