AMERY'S POV
"Run faster Emelda! Don't look back or else you'll be caught!" I heard the sound of heavy breathing followed by continuous galloping and shaking movements. She was running but why? I saw a little girl peeking out from the blankets that she was held in and looked around to see a fire burning through the trees and bushes in flames. It was a horrendous sight to behold.
The reflection of light from the fire flashed through my eyes and the next thing I knew, I saw myself almost being crushed by a tree but then I realized that it just fell right through me. What sort of sorcery Is this? Where am I exactly?
"The border..." I heard the subtle whisper of an estranged woman followed by tiny hiccups and snivels. "Where is it? Where is the border?" She asked no one in particular as she searched trying to find something that seemed lost. I crunched my face in worry. Too many questions were running through my mind at that particular moment. Who is she? Why is she running? Why does she look scared? Who is that baby in her arms and why does she look oddly familiar?
I followed her closely. She couldn't see me and I don't know why. The man who shouted earlier whom I presumed to be her husband had gone back to ward off whatever was chasing them leaving her to navigate the woods on her own. My eyes trailed down her sleeves and I noticed a strange mark engraved there. I'm sure I've seen it before but where?
"Stop!" Someone yelled from afar and we both turned towards the direction of the sound at the same time only to see some armed men approaching. They were wielding weapons that I had never seen before and the look on their faces told me that they meant business.
"Stay away from me." She breathed, clutching onto her baby tightly as though her life depended on it. Her eyes were blazing in fury and I could see the fear and anger registered in them.
"We have no use for you woman." One of the men growled. The angry lines on his face show. "Hand that child over to us, now!"
"You'll have to kill me first before you get to her." She shot back. I swallowed on her behalf. As much as I applauded her bravery, I still couldn't shake off the feeling of dread that rose inside me. These men were armed for crying out loud and she was not going to win against them no matter how much she tried. It's a lost cause, a lost battle.
"The alpha king wants her." He stated coldly. "That baby shouldn't even be born in the first place so hand her over now that I'm being nice about it."
She snickered. Her lips stretched into a callous smile. "Go back and tell your alpha king that he will not have my baby and over my dead body will I let him get to her. Ondina will not be sacrificed to pacify any curse. My daughter is innocent." She expressed with bravery but I could still see the tears glistening in her eyes.
Why do I feel sad just looking at her? The baby smiled through the blanket and I caught a glimpse of her face. She looks so pretty and innocent. What exactly could this baby have done that they want her killed?
"Grab her!" The head of the gang ordered and the rest of the troops behind him lounged forward but before they could get to her, she stomped her feet on the ground, separating herself from the rest of the forest. A portal appeared in an instant and she jumped through.
My jaw dropped to the ground as I looked around bewildered by what had just happened. The rest of the men cussed angrily amongst themselves and dispersed slowly. I wondered why they didn't go through. I made my way towards the portal and glided my hands through the beam. It felt different. Magical, strange but exhilarating.
I tried to shift back but before I could, I spotted that wolf from my vision running towards me and she pushed me in almost immediately. I appeared in a strange place and I saw that woman close to the garbage area.
"You have to be strong my child." She whispered as she tucked the baby into a small package lying around the place. "Your father and I..." She paused, her eyes tearing up when she couldn't hold In her tears. "We love you so much but we can't be close to you anymore else, they'll find you and come to kill you."
The little girl giggled, throwing her hands in the air in all directions.
"Ondina" She called out in a serious tone. "You are powerful and as long as you know that, they cannot harm you. So don't be scared of anyone and try to be brave." She rambled on. I tried to touch her but found it incredibly hard to do.
"I love you." She placed a kiss on the baby's forehead and with tears in her eyes, she slowly disappeared into the darkness until she was long gone. Just then, the baby started to cry loudly. I tried calling her back but I couldn't.
Just as I tried to touch the package to calm the baby down, I felt something push me back. It started slow and before I knew it, I heard something or rather someone whispering my name. I plunged into the darkness and slowly began to open my eyes to embrace my environment.
I tried to move but my entire body protested. Where am I? How did I end up here? I looked around to see nothing but pitch-black darkness. I huddled at the far end of the cold cage when I realized that I had been injured. My entire body aching massively. The wounds inflicted on me stung as though my body had been bitten terribly by a group of ants. That's when it hit me that I had passed out and everything I saw was a trance. I bit down hard at my lips to reel in the pain and suppress the heat that burned up my insides.
Taking deep breaths, I tried to find my footing but failed miserably as I crashed down to the cold, hard surface. I pushed out my damp and sticky hair that had glued to the side of my face and tucked it behind my ears. I felt the sweat break out of my skin as my entire body trembled and shook continuously.
"Help!" I heard a tiny voice whisper into the darkness. That's when it hit me that the tiny voice belonged to no one else but me. What happened? The last thing I remembered was passing out In the woods so how did I get all these bruises? Who brought me here? "Help!" I called out again. "Is anyone out there?"
"There's no one out there sweetie." Someone answered from the darkness. "And no one's coming for you, I can assure you that much." She added. Her words were followed by loud footsteps and that's when she emerged from the darkness with a fire torch in her hands.
I brought my face up to see none other than Madeline, Levi's supposed girlfriend staring down at me. Did he send her to kidnap and bring me here? Is that what this is about? Was that his plan? To have her kill me and leave me out here to die all alone without any trace. "Why am I here?!" I yelled out at her. My voice was a little hoarse and worn out. "Why did you bring me out here? Let me go or I swear that I'll make you pay for this?"
"Tsk, tsk, tsk!" She tsked loudly, shaking her head in the process. "And how exactly do you intend on making me pay? You're tied up in there and I'm standing out here with all the materials to end your life." She squatted down after placing the torch in a place to illuminate the entire cave. "Besides, you've got it all wrong sweetheart. I'm the one here to make you pay and not the other way around." Her lips stretched into a cynical smile. "Levi will get you for this." I threatened weakly. My whole body failed to help me.
She laughed. A sinister laugh that threw me off. "Levi? Do you really believe that the same person who connived with me to kill you is going to come and rescue you? Are you that naive or just plain dumb?"
"Didn't he tell you?" She asked suddenly but when she realized that I didn't have a clue as to what she was talking about, she faked a shocked gasp. "He didn't, did he? I can't believe that you're still in the dark about this. Levi wants you dead Amery. It's destiny and fate that has signed it. You cannot be alive and that's why I'm here to do what he couldn't do. To finish you off myself."
Destiny? Fate? What exactly was she talking about? My brain was too distraught to process any thoughts at the moment.
"He...h-he will f-find me." I stuttered. My breath coming in pants.
"You are bathed in one gallon of wolf's bane Amery." She informed me. "Do you know what that stuff does to you? It blocks your scent and alters any connection between you and anyone. They cannot find you no matter how they try and this night, I'll make sure that they don't find you for eternity." She smirked. "You can call and cry all you want Amery but it's only a matter of time before you're gone for good." She whispered coldly and hit me hard across the face, knocking me out for the second time.
