Claiming My Wolf -
Chapter 16
~~Micah’s PoV~~
“Hey, baby.” Blair slides a hand up my back as the bell rings for the end of class. “My parents are out again for a while tonight. You want to come over?”
Normally I don’t have to think about that for a second, but today I hesitate for some reason. And then before I can answer, I receive a mind-link from the Alpha.
Micah, Logan would like to see you at the pack house.
That shocks me. Logan hasn’t invited me over in a really long time. He can’t mind-link me directly yet because he doesn’t have his wolf, so his dad must be passing the message on. I quickly reply.
Yes, sir. I’m on my way.
“They need me at the pack house,” I tell Blair now, liking how important it makes me sound. “I don’t know how long I’ll be, but I’ll call you later if I’m free.”
I already know I’m not going to call her, though I’m still not really sure why.
I grab my stuff from my locker and head over to the pack house. Normally as the Beta’s family, we’d have our own apartment within the house, but my dad wanted his own space so we live just a couple of houses away. I already think that when I’m Beta, I’ll move back into the pack house. This is where the most important people in the pack live, after all. It’s where I belong.
“Micah.” Logan’s voice calls out from down the hall as I start towards the Alpha’s office. He’s in the smaller room next door, the one that his dad gave him to use. His dad’s already treating him like the Alpha he’s going to be, unlike my dad who won’t even think about delegating anything to me yet.
“Hey,” I greet him as I follow him into the room. “What’s up?”
Although I try to sound cool, I’m actually really excited that he’s called me. We haven’t talked much over the last year, and though I know it’s nothing to do with me specifically, it still hurts. So that’s one good thing, and the other is that I’m guessing the reason he called is something to do with the attack, and I want to know what’s going on.
We sit down and Logan tells me about the stuff that’s going on in the other packs, the crazy, messed up mate matches.
“That’s f****d up,” I tell him when he tells me about the brother and sister being mates.
He almost smiles. It’s the closest I’ve seen him get to a smile in a long time. “Yeah, just a little bit. Nobody knows what it all means yet, but I thought you should know too.”
Pride fills my chest. Maybe my dad doesn’t value my opinion, but Logan does. I don’t know what’s made him come out of himself now and finally be interested in the rest of us again, but I couldn’t be happier that it’s happening.
There’s a knock at the door that connects Logan’s little office with the Alpha’s much bigger one.
“Yeah?” Logan calls out and the door opens. Ellis, the pack Gamma stands there. He looks a bit surprised to see me, but he addresses himself to both of us.
“Beta Aldric has just finished questioning the wolf we caught earlier. The Alpha wants you to join us.”
We both jump to our feet and follow him into the Alpha’s office. Alpha Layton gives me a polite nod as I walk in, but my dad doesn’t acknowledge me. He speaks directly to the Alpha, ignoring everyone else.
“He didn’t know much,” he sneers. “But I got everything out of him that he did know.”
I was sure he did. I could see traces of b***d on his hands if I looked close enough.
“Which was?” the Alpha asks.
“He was sent to kill the half-breed girl.”
My heart feels like it stops beating for a second. The guy came here to kill Sadie?
Logan stiffens next to me, but for a different reason, apparently. “She’s got a name, Beta. It’s Sadie Jennings.”
Logan knows her full name? I didn’t even know it. Why does he?
My dad isn’t impressed with the interruption. “Whatever her name is, she’s the reason he was here.” He turns back to the Alpha. “But he doesn’t know who wants her dead or why. He was hired to do it and it was all anonymous.”
Alpha Layton nods, but I can see the pain in his eyes. He must be thinking about what happened last year, the last time someone infiltrated our territory.
“We’ll have to look into this,” he says, looking around the room. “I don’t know enough about this girl to know why she’d be targeted, but obviously she’s a member of our pack now and will be offered our full protection.”
His eyes fall on me.
“Micah, I’d like you to provide personal security to her until we get to the bottom of this.”
Me? A bunch of different feelings rush through me at once. I’m honored that the Alpha would pick me for an important job like this. I’m a little bit nervous because I’ve never done anything like it before. And I’m kind of excited, I have to admit, at the idea of having to spend all my time with Sadie, but I’m confused about why I’m excited.
I really don’t know what to feel.
“I can do it,” Logan speaks up from beside me, and instantly my spirits fall. Does he think I can’t handle this?
Luckily, the Alpha takes my side. “You don’t have your wolf yet. Micah does. If she needs to be defended, he’s better able to do that.”
I know he doesn’t mean it as it sounds, but Logan’s face goes pale, and the Alpha instantly hears how it sounded too.
“Logan, I didn’t mean…”
Logan doesn’t wait for an apology. He storms out of the room, leaving the rest of us in awkward silence.
“f**k,” the Alpha swears under his breath. “I’ve got to go talk to him. Aldric, you can take the lead on finding out who hired this wolf and why. Micah, you’re responsible for Sadie.”
“Yes, sir,” my dad and I reply in unison and the Alpha hurries out of the room after his son, leaving the rest of us in awkward silence.
Gamma Ellis breaks the silence as he turns to me. “I can give you a briefing on providing personal security, things you should be aware of.”
I nod in agreement and glance over at my dad. For a second, I hope maybe he’ll say something, like he’s proud of me for getting this assignment, or he thinks the Alpha made a good choice. Any kind of acknowledgement. But he ignores me, turning to his own team to start making his own plans instead.
I grit my teeth as I turn back to the Gamma. I don’t know why I even bother sometimes. “Let’s go.”
