Claiming My Wolf
Chapter 17

~~Sadie’s PoV~~

I walk into the kitchen at breakfast time the next day and immediately everyone stops talking. Nothing like making me feel like more of an outsider than I already do, I think.

“Good morning, Sadie,” my aunt says, standing up and going to the counter. “What would you like for breakfast?”

I’m not really hungry. But I didn’t eat supper last night and our lunch yesterday was interrupted by that crazy incident at the school, so I suppose I better eat something.

“Whatever you’ve got is fine,” I tell her. I don’t want her going to any extra trouble.

“Hey, Sadie,” Aaron greets me as I sit down, looking a little sheepish. “I hear you know all about us now?”

I guess it definitely wasn’t a dream. I didn’t really think it was, but this just confirms it.

“I know a little,” I reply. “I guess there’s probably more I still need to learn.”

Ava nods enthusiastically, her smile a little too bright. “Like I said, any questions you have, I’m your girl.”

My aunt sets a plate of eggs and toast down in front of me. “Are you sure you’re up to going to school today, Sadie? I can call in and tell them you need the day off.”

It’s tempting, but what’s the point? It’s not going to be any different tomorrow. My parents are still going to be gone and I’m still going to be living in a town of werewolves where I don’t understand anything that’s happening. I might as well just get used to it.

“It’s okay,” I say. “I can go.”

I eat my breakfast as Ava and Aaron talk about some of their assignments and then almost before I know it we’re pulling up outside the school the school again. I’m barely out of the car when my homeroom teacher Mr Latham appears in front of us. “Good morning Sadie, Ava. Can I speak to you both for a minute?”

Now what? Am I in trouble for cutting out of class yesterday? Maybe, but if that’s the case, why is Ava coming along?

We follow Mr Latham into the school and into my homeroom class room. It’s empty other than one other person.

Micah.

I narrow my eyes at him, expecting him to make some sarcastic comment like he always does when he sees me, but to my surprise, he just stands there calmly, not saying anything.

“Sit down, please,” Mr Latham says to all of us, closing and locking the door behind us. “Now, Sadie, I understand that you now know you’re living in a wolf pack.”

Word travels fast in this town, apparently. “I do.”

“You’ll be able to join your classmates in training soon,” he continues, and I don’t really know what he’s talking about but I nod anyway. “But for now, since things are still so new for you, the Alpha has requested that you have someone to look out for you while you’re at school. Just in case anything like yesterday happens again.”

I don’t know which part of that to focus on first. Why do I need someone to look out for me? Is what happened yesterday really that common?

Mr Latham nods towards Micah. “Since you’re in several of the same classes already, Micah has volunteered to provide that support for you.”

What?

Why would the one person who’s been more of a jerk to me than anyone offer to protect me now, unless he thinks he can somehow make my life more miserable? It feels like some kind of trap.

“Mr Latham,” Ava speaks up, sounding just as surprised as I am. “Can’t Aaron or I do it? We could switch some of our classes around…”

He cuts her off. “There’s no need. Mr Geary’s already trained and he’s already got experience with his wolf, and you won’t even get yours until this weekend. Besides, the Alpha’s already approved it.”

That shuts Ava up. Everyone sure seems to take this Alpha guy seriously.

“I’ll leave you to make the arrangements between yourselves,” Mr Latham continues. “I trust you can both work together as adults.”

He raises an eyebrow at Micah as he says that. He must have noticed that we don’t really get along.

Mr Latham leaves the room now and Ava turns to Micah. “If this is some sort of trick so you can harrass Sadie…”

“It’s not,” he promises, sounding more sincere than I’ve ever heard him before. “The Alpha’s given me a job and I will do it properly.”

That seems to convince Ava. Do I really just have to tell people the Alpha said something and they’ll all do whatever I say? That’s what it feels like right now.

Ava turns to me. “Do you want me to stay?”

I’m not sure what good that will do. She and Micah just tend to bicker about me like I’m not even there at times, so I tell her to go ahead and I’ll see her at lunch. She leaves the room too, leaving me and Micah alone together.

“So, you know we’re all werewolves,” he says, repeating what Mr Latham already asked me.

“It looks that way,” I answer, still not really willing to say the words out loud. It sounds so crazy.

“And you know what you are?” he continues, a little bit of his usual sneer coming back into his voice.

“The girl who’s going to kick your a*s if you don’t choose your next words very carefully?” I say to him as sweetly as I can.

His face darkens a little. “I guess you haven’t learned everything yet. That’s fine, I can explain it to you. We’ll have time, after all. For the next little while, Sadie, everytime you turn around, I’m going to be there.”

f**k. That’s just what I need.
