Claiming My Wolf
Chapter 57

~~Micah’s PoV~~

I’m unable to sit still as I wait in the back bedroom of the old house in the forest. I used to play here all the time when I was a kid, whenever I wanted to get away from my dad. Logan and I had come across the house one day when we were out exploring the forest together and he asked his dad about it. The Alpha told us it used to belong to one of the pack elders who became something of a hermit, who wanted to live alone but still remain on the pack land, but he had died a little while earlier and no one had used it since. He said Logan and I were welcome to use it if we wanted to.

We cleaned it all up and used it as our headquarters for all kinds of elaborate games we made up. Logan and I were inseparable for a long, long time, but we started to drift apart a little bit in high school. I started spending time with lots of different girls, and Logan wasn’t interested in casual flirting or hook-ups. We started to have different interests. And then, of course, there was the attack where the Luna and Kara were killed, and everything changed for Logan.

Looking around the room now, remembering all the times we had here, I think maybe I could have been a better friend to him during the last year. He pushed me away, yeah, but he was hurting, and I knew that. Maybe I should have fought harder. He let Sadie in, after all. Maybe he would have let me in too, if I had tried a little more and thought a little less about myself.

Or maybe it was really her he needed her all along.

Over the last few weeks, Sadie has brought us closer together again, more like how we used to be, but now she’s pulling us apart too, though not on purpose.

I know she makes me want to be better and I guess she does that for Logan too. But we can’t both have her. I’m not interested in sharing, and I’m sure Logan isn’t either. So sooner or later, she’s going to have to choose, and I can only hope that I’ve done enough that she’ll consider me.

I pace around the room like a caged animal, waiting for Sadie or the Goddess to call me back, until I realize there is something useful I could be doing instead, so I open my link to the pack and reach out to Logan.

‘Micah?’ He sounds relieved to hear me, but also out of breath, which is weird, since he’s not actually using his lungs to speak to me right now. ‘Are you safe? Where’s Sadie?’

‘We’re safe,’ I assure him. ‘She’s still with me and no one’s found us.’

‘Where are you?’ He sounds a bit distracted, and I can’t contain my curiosity.

‘What’s going on? Have you got my dad yet?’

‘Not exactly,’ he admits. ‘I’m working on it. Where are you?’

‘The old elder’s house in the woods.’

I almost hear his sigh of relief. ‘That’s perfect. Stay there, I’ll send a squad to stand guard.’

Stand guard? ‘So they’re still looking for her?’

‘Sorry, Micah, I have to go.’ He closes the link before I can get an answer.

s**t. It doesn’t sound like things are going very well. I wish I could go out and help, but I know it’s more important for now that I stay here and make sure Sadie’s protected.

And now that I know she might still be in danger, I can’t wait any longer. I open the door to the room and head back out to the living room. The Moon Goddess is sitting next to Sadie on the couch now, like they’re friends, just talking to her. They both look at me in surprise when I come in, and I feel like I’ve interrupted something.

“I’m sorry,” I apologize to them both. “I just wanted to make sure everything was okay, I’ve heard that the people looking for Sadie are still out there. I needed to see she was safe.”

The Goddess gets to her feet and Sadie quickly follows. “You should focus on helping your pack now,” she tells Sadie. “Once that’s finished, I will return and you can give me your answer then. Until then, you won’t feel a bond with anyone, whether they are fated for you or not.”

There is another flash of light and I close my eyes against it. When I open them again, the Goddess is gone. It’s just me and Sadie left in the room.

“What was all that about?” I ask curiously.

“It’s a long story,” Sadie says, looking conflicted. She gives her head a shake. “But Selene is right, we need to help the others now.”

“Selene?” She’s on a first name basis with the Moon Goddess now?

Sadie shrugs. “I guess. But listen, Micah, I’ve got my wolf now.”

She does? “So… you can recognize your mate?” I ask hesitantly. If that’s the case, it’s not me. I would have known it the second I walked in, and a lump fills my throat at the idea that I’ve missed my chance after all.

But Sadie shakes her head. “Not yet. Like I said, it’s a long story. But I’ve got other abilities now, apparently, and I need to use them to stop your father.”

That’s definitely my goal too. “So what do you want to do?” I ask her.

She looks at me with a new fire in her eyes. “I want to fight.”
