Claiming My Wolf
Chapter 65

~~Logan’s PoV~~

My dad gives all of the senior class the next week off school. Most of us were involved in the fighting, and some people are still in the hospital. I spend a lot of time with my dad and Micah, his new Beta. We have to root out everyone that was working with Beta Aldric. It’s unpleasant work, especially learning just how many of our pack have betrayed us. I can see how much it bothers my dad. But there’s a new peace in his eyes too, knowing that the person responsible for my mom and Kara’s death has finally been caught, and I feel lighter too.

Although a lot of that could also be because of my new mate.

I see Sadie as much as I can, but she’s at the hospital with Ava a lot, and Micah is too. He told me the morning after the fight that they’re mates.

“I never would have guessed,” I admit.

He shrugs. “Me neither, but it feels right.”

I know what that feels like, which reminds me of the other thing I wanted to talk to him about. “I never knew you had any kind of feelings for Sadie.” We haven’t talked about this yet, but I figure it’s better to clear the air.

“I didn’t know you did either,” he says.

I nod. That’s what I thought. “Is this going to make things weird with us?”

I’m relieved when he shakes his head. “No. To be honest, I thought it would. When she told me you guys were mates, I didn’t see how we could move forward from that. But then I felt Ava’s fear when she woke up, and I just knew. She needs me, and I don’t know if I could have been the man she needs if I hadn’t gone through everything with Sadie. I guess it was all meant to happen just the way it did. Who the f*ck can say?”

I laugh. “That was almost poetic, right up until the end.”

He laughs too. “Yeah, well, I can’t totally change, right? Then it wouldn’t be me anymore.”

“I think you’ve changed just the right amount,” I tell him. “Thank you for everything you did. Sadie wouldn’t be here without you.”

He shrugs like it’s no big deal, but I can see in his eyes that he appreciates the thanks anyway.

Now it’s Wednesday and it’s Sadie’s birthday. My dad insisted that she have a big party. He says it will be good for the pack to have something to celebrate. He’s one of only a few people who know that she’s my mate. We don’t want to have to explain to everyone why she got her wolf early or that she’s the vessel. The fewer people that know about that, the better. All my dad has shared with the pack is that Beta Aldric was a traitor, we defeated him and the mate bonds have been restored.

Sadie has told me everything though. She told me about how the Moon Goddess came to her and about the choice she was given. At first I was a little hurt that she didn’t choose me when she had the chance, but when she explained to me why she didn’t, that she didn’t want me to ever feel that she had tricked me into anything, I could understand her reasoning. I promised her once again that I really was going to choose her no matter what, but that knowing she was always meant for me really does make everything better.

So I have a gift for her for her party tonight, and then I have plans for us later. I can’t wait to acknowledge her as my mate in front of everyone, and then make it fully official later.

Everyone’s gathered again on the back lawn of the pack house, just like they were for my birthday last week. We even re-used a lot of the same decorations. I know Sadie won’t mind. She’s not the kind of person to get bothered about things like that.

I’m wearing a suit. I know Sadie will be dressed up and I want us to look good together. It’s the first time I’m seeing a lot of the pack since everything that happened on Friday, and they all thank me for taking the lead while my dad was injured and keeping the pack safe. I tell them it’s what I had to do, but I appreciate their support anyway.

Then Micah and Ava came in, and everyone turns to look at them. Ava’s wearing a pretty white flowy dress that covers her legs completely as she sits in her wheelchair. Micah stands proudly beside her, but a little defensively too, as if he’s daring anyone to look at her the wrong way.

I go over and say hi to them both. I’ve been to visit Ava in the hospital a few times, and I still feel guilty about her injuries even though she told me she doesn’t blame me. We lost three wolves that night, and there are a few seriously injured still, like Ava, and I can’t help but feel responsible. They were all under my command, after all. My dad promises it will get easier over time, and I have to trust he’s right. Right now it still feels like crap.

“Somebody dressed up,” Ava teases me as I lean down to k**s her cheek. She’s one of the few who already knows about Sadie being my mate.

“I couldn’t let her totally outshine me,” I reply. “Like you and Micah. No one would believe he’s worthy of you.”

“Thanks, Logan,” Micah says sarcastically, and we all laugh. I feel like this is a small glimpse into our future, me and my Beta, our mates, living here in the pack house, running the pack. If this is what it’ll be like, I think it’s going to be pretty great.

Then there’s a hushed gasp through the crowd and I know before I even turn that Sadie’s arrived. I can smell her sweet scent and feel her nearness on my skin.

And when I turn and see her, the whole rest of the world just fades away. She’s wearing a pale violet dress, her dark hair half pulled back just like it was the day we met in the cafeteria, and I can’t help sending up a silent thank you to the Moon Goddess, who I’m certain is watching us tonight.

Thank you for making her mine.
