Don’t Fall for the Billionaire Lover -
Chapter 692
He moved left, and Chloe mirrored him. He went right, and she followed suit. Finally cornered, Pax spoke up, "Chloe..."
"Pax, look at me," Chloe insisted, her voice firm. She could see it too-Pax wasn't himself. The light in his eyes was gone, replaced by a distant, shrunken look. His usual brightness had vanished.
He hesitated, then lifted his gaze to meet hers. Just like that, a sharp pain pierced Chloe's heart. Pax's eyes were dark, empty of any light. It was still his face, but he seemed hollow, like all his energy had been drained away.
"Pax, how have you been lately?" Chloe asked, her voice tinged with worry. She already knew the answer. He wouldn't look so lifeless if things were going well.
Pax's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "I didn't want to come today, but I knew you'd be here, Chloe. I just wanted to see you. I won't be a bother."
He had planned to just take a quick look and leave. But after one glance, he longed for more.
Chloe's voice softened, "You don't need to avoid me. We're family now, right?"
Pax paused, then lowered his head again. "Yes, Aunt Chloe," he said quietly. "I haven't had the chance to congratulate you and Uncle yet." Chloe gave a gentle smile. "No need for formality. You know I've always thought of you like a little brother."
"So, what have you been up to lately?" she asked.
So much had happened recently. Pax had seemed to disappear completely. Chloe had assumed Claire might have sent him abroad again.
"I joined the company," Pax replied. "I'm now the manager of the International Department."
Chloe was taken aback. Pax had always been adamant about not joining the family business, insisting he'd never work at Sartori Corporation.
"That's great," Chloe said, smiling. "Honestly, it doesn't matter what you do, as long as you're happy. Don't pressure yourself. Whatever our relationship with your mom is, it has nothing to do with you. You need to live your life, find your passions and dreams."
Pax's fingers tightened and then slowly relaxed. He finally managed a smile. "I understand, Chloe. No matter what, I'll always be there for you." Meanwhile, Connor had just stepped away when he got a call. Diana's voice was on the line. "Uncle Connor, I'm on the rooftop. I need to see you. Just you, or I'll jump."
The call ended abruptly. Connor frowned but headed to the rooftop alone.
The rooftop of Sartori Corporation was expansive, a place few visited. Unbeknownst to most, it offered the most stunning views of the city. Connor had spent much of his
childhood up here. At ten, d net
his
darkest days, he had often thought about jumping. But then he met
Chloe, and everything changed.
He continued visiting afterward, but with a new outlook. His heart now held hope, expectations, and reasons to live. Above this abyss, he discovered, lay the most breathtaking view.
As he thought back, Connor's
emotions swirled. He climbed the last step and opened the rooftop door. Not far away, he saw Diana's wheelchair parked right where he had once stood, contemplating the leap so many times before.
