First Love Of The Alpha -
Chapter 48
Maureens POV
When I felt Landyn put his arm around me, I knew it was just out of pity. I’m sure everyone noticed how heartbroken I was to see Silas with another woman.
How cruel and heartless could he be to flaunt the blonde twit knowing I was here. He didn’t even try to be respectful towards me and didn’t even try to hide his hands from roaming her backside.
How could he not see what my uncle did was not my fault. I couldn’t have predicted him working with rogues and them murdering our mothers, and it wasn’t my fault that my dad and his mom had an affair.
His dad didn’t seem to hold any of it against me, so why was he?
I lost everything that day, including my dignity. He rejected me in front of the whole coven. My whole family used to be respected, and now i was the only member left, and I became a joke or a traitor as some of the females witches would say. They had all hoped to end up with Silas. Looks like one of them got their wish.
Landyns arm was warm and soothing. It gave me a sense of security, and I could feel that he would protect anyone who needed it.
I looked over at Silas, who almost looked pained and honestly pissed from seeing me.
He had no right to be so mad. He claimed to love me once. But how easily he rejected me over something i had no control over made me question if he ever did.
I, however, was over the moon in love with him. I would have done anything to protect the bond we shared. Truth is, I was struggling getting over him and letting everything go. I wanted justice, but most of all, I wanted revenge for what was taken from me.
Landyn mentioned he needed to call his pack. I stepped aside to give him his privacy and went to talk to Marvin.
He opened his arms to me and gave me a warm embrace. As I was hugging him, I saw a very annoyed Silas, and his twit seemed jealous.
Marvin took my face into his hands. “I’m so happy you’re home, Maureen. You never had to leave. I never blamed you for any of this. “
Tears started to form in my eyes, and Marvin saw my eyes drift towards Silas and the blonde.
“Don’t worry about him. I made it clear to him that I didn’t support his choice in rejecting you. Don’t let Olivia get to you. She’s not the brightest witch.”
“Thank you, I’m sorry. About everything. “
“There’s nothing to be sorry about. Come home for good whenever you’re ready.”
“I’m not so sure if that’s a good idea. When Silas takes over, he won’t want me here. I’m sure he will banish me. It’s just better if I stay away.”
“Well, he’s making stupid decisions. He won’t be taking anything over till I see fit. You can count on that.”
“I’m really okay.”
“I see that. Befriending wolves, or is there something more there?” He gave me a slight smirk and headed inside.
I saw Landyn, Conner, and Louise approach me, and we headed inside together. Silas was just staring at me. Olivia just kept looking back and forth between us and was clearly jealous. She shouldn’t be, though he ended things. He got exactly what he wanted.
As soon as we stepped inside, all three of their mouths fell opened and Landyn yelled, “Holy shit.”
I laughed louder than what I probably should have. “Not what you were expecting?”
“Landyn shook his head. “Uh, no. Why does the outside look like a large pack house but the inside like a medieval castle?”
“That’s because it is. We use a spell to make the outside look more plain and not stand out. A castle would draw out too much attention.”
Louise was mesmerized. “The walls are out of stone and everything, and oh my gosh, the staircases. Is there a tower?” She seemed way too excited.
Conner sighed. “We’re not going to pretend you’re a princess.”
Me and Landyn both laughed. Their relationship was quite amusing.
I was pretty much caught up to speed with everything that happened in their pack from Louise over the last few days. I felt bad for all of them. I just hope I can help take there, luna, and the Rogue King down.
“If you guys are hungry, we can head over the dining hall?”
Conner chuckled. “Are you seriously asking three wolves who haven’t eaten in like eight hours if we’re hungry?”
“Okay, good point. I’m just warning you that everyone is probably going to stare.”
Conner wiggled his eyebrows. “Don’t worry, me and my hunky body are used to it.”
I rolled my eyes. “Yep, big headed. Like I thought.”
Landyn snorted. “See buddy your not that hard to figure out.”
Conner huffed. “Let’s just go eat.”
As soon as we hit the dining hall, I noticed Silas and Olivia walking to the head table. It sat a little higher than the rest of the tables, and it was long and rectangle instead of round like the others. It was only for the coven leaders and their families.
I watched Olivia sit in the seat that once belonged to me. Before I even I found out that I was Silas beloved my family belonged up there. My dad was his second in command.I stared at the empty chairs that once held my parents and brother.
I felt Landyn put his arm around my shoulders. “You okay?”
I shook the feelings aside and looked up to him and his big grey eyes. “Yeah, just being back here brought up some stuff.”
When I looked back over, a man I didn’t recognize sat in my father’s chair that must be Marvin’s new second in command.
Landyn squeezed my shoulder slightly. “Hey, let’s just go have a seat.”
He led me to an empty table. His arm never left my shoulders. I could feel eyes burning in the back of my head. I turned around to take a small glance to see Silas glaring at me. I just turned back around and squeezed Landyns hand that was on my shoulder.
We all sat down, and Conner looked at me confused. “Where’s the buffet line start.”
I giggled we don’t do that here. Before I could have time to explain, food appeared in the middle of the table. Conner got startled and jumped back, making his chair fall backward to the ground.
I couldn’t contain my laughter. “Oh my gosh, that was priceless. You should have seen your face. “
Conner stuck his tongue at me and picked up his chair from the ground, and sat back down. “Any more surprises I should worry about?”
“No, least not right now.”
Landyn had his hand covering his mouth, trying to cover the grin he had on his face. I could tell he was enjoying seeing Conner go through a little torment.
I watched Landyn fill his plate with ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and four dinner rolls. “Can you seriously eat all that?”
He nodded. “Oh yeah, I probably will need more. Will there be dessert?”
“I guess I shouldn’t be all that surprised. You are huge compared to all the men here.”
Conner wiggled his eyebrows. Yeah, he is.”
Landyn was glaring at Conner, while Conner was just smirking back at him.
I looked at Louise. “Are they always like this?”
“Oh, you just wait and see. I asked the same question when I started to hang out with them. They are a bunch of goofballs, but they have eachothers backs, and they are the most forgiving people I have ever met. I would be lost without this group of people. Honestly, I was till recently. “
Landyn smiled at her. “I’m happy to hear you say that.”
Louise blushed slightly, not expecting the boys to be listening .
I watched their faces in amusement, the dinner course disappeared, and the desserts took its place.
Conners eyes got big with excitment. He really is like a big kid. I think he took a little bit of everything. “Won’t you get a stomach ache?”
“No, we can pretty much eat whatever we want.”
I shook my head. “Must be nice.”
Landyn just settled on a large piece of pumpkin pie. “Don’t let him fool you. We all don’t eat to that extent.
He started to pile his pie with whipped cream to the point where you couldn’t see it anymore.
I started to giggle. He looked at me confused. “What’s so funny?”
“Nothing, that’s just how I like my pumpkin pie, piled high with whipped cream, and everyone thinks I’m ridiculous. It’s nice to see someone else do the same thing.”
He shocked me by pushing his plate towards me, so it was between us and handed me another fork. “I took the last piece of pie. I’m okay with sharing. I get the same reaction at the pack, too. We will just have to stick together. “
Wait, is he flirting with me? I wasn’t sure what to do, so I just took the fork and stabbed a bite out of his pie. “It’s perfect.”
I looked up to see the staring daggers of Silas again and put my head instantly down.
Landyn scooted his chair even closer to me and put his arm around me so it was resting on the chair. “Don’t let him see you like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like you still care. Makes men like that feel like they are winning. He wants to see you hurting, to see you still wanting him, to see that he still has power over you. “
He was freakishly close to my face. He rubbed his fingers down my cheek, which made me nervously gulp.
Landyns POV
I saw the agony Maureens ex was causing her. I’m sure the evil stares the bimbo was giving her right along with Silas wasn’t helping.
I did something completely unlike myself and scooted my chair closer to her. I placed my arm around her and rubbed my fingers up and down her arm.
She lightly bit her l*p. I couldn’t help the smile that crossed my face. I looked over at Louise and Conner, and they were grinning from ear to ear. They were enjoying watching this play out.
I brought my attention back to Maureen, and I couldn’t help but admire her beauty. Sure, I wasn’t a Virgin. But I’ve never dated or made any sort of commitment. I never wanted to get attached to someone who wasn’t my fated mate. I’ve been praying to the moon goddess that I’m one of the lucky ones.
When I mentioned to Maureen about not showing that she cares, she seemed slightly startled. Her heart rate picked up, and her breathing was heavy.
I thought at first it was because of what I said. I hadn’t realized how close I was to her face. It’s like I couldn’t control myself. I traced my fingers down her cheek. She gulped loudly, which made a grin cross my face.
She started to stutter. “I um, I, I should show you guys your guest rooms.” She cleared her throat and shot up to put some distance between us.”
She would get along with Lily really well. They both do the nervous stutter thing. It was adorable on both of them.
We followed suit and stood up to follow Maureen out. We passed Silas’s table, and he looked livid. I was beyond pleased with that.
This time, it wasn’t just Maureen getting an evil glare. He shot one right at me, and I winked at him. Let him be jealous. I don’t think Maureen caught that he was.
I looked at Olivia, and she gave me a small wave and a flirtatious smile. Silas noticed the interaction she was giving me and got even more pissed and red in the face.
Conner linked me. “Not like you causing problems and at fricken witches coven. Really Landyn?”
“You cause problems everywhere. You owe me one.”
“Fine, fine, we’re not done talking about this.”
She stepped out and talked to a witch carrying a basket of cleaning supplies. Maureens eyes shot up, with a surprised expression, but nodded, clearly looking upset.
“This way.”
She took us across the castle and up one set of stairs. “I hope this is okay?” She pointed to two sets of doors.
“This seems fine.”
“It really isn’t. Silas put us with the low-level witches and only gave us two rooms. I’m not even allowed to sleep in my old room. I’m guessing because it’s next to his current room. So, really, this is a big slap in the face. “
Conner started to pout. “Does that mean I can’t sleep with Louise?”
Louise slapped his shoulder. “It’s fine, Landyn can snuggle you tonight. Gives me a nice break.”
I snorted but tried to cover it up with a cough. “Is there a couch in one of these rooms?”
Maureen nodded. “Yeah, in both.”
“Well, if you’re okay, I can just sleep on the couch, and you can have the bed. That way, we don’t have to listen to whiney butt over there. But only if you’re comfortable with that. Besides, it might make your dumb a*s ex jealous if he got word of this.”
Maureen scrunched her eyebrows but gave a big smile. “Um, yeah, that should be fine.”
Conner linked me. “What are you doing, man? This is so unlike you. You never talk this much and certainly dont openly flirt with anyone.”
“I’m not sure I just feel this pull to protect her. I can’t explain it. It’s not the mate bound, though.”
“Hmm, maybe you actually like a girl for once.”
“Shut up.”
I held the door open to the first room and gestured for Maureen to go in first. I followed behind her.
The room was average. They have the same stone walls. It had a fireplace at least and a canopy bed, and an antique looking couch that looked really uncomfortable and small.
Maureen looked at the couch and then up and down at me. She covered her mouth with her hand, trying to cover her smile. “I’ll take the couch that will not even fit half of you.”
I chuckled. “I can make a bed on the floor.”
“Oh gosh, don’t be ridiculous. I’m small. I’ll fit on the couch just fine.”
“Well, you did us a huge favor coming back here and dealing with all of this to help us. You least should have the bed.”
She put her hand on my shoulder. “I’m not exactly doing this for free, and you know that. You know what i want. I will be the one to kill him. So yes, I’ll be taking the couch.”
“I never promised that. Im pretty sure i said there was a line.”
“I know you did. But I plan on cutting in line.”
“How do you plan doing that?”
She looked at me awkwardly. I figured it out. I didn’t even need her to say anything. “Soon as you get eyes on him, you’re going to teleport and take the kill?”
“Maureen, if someone else has the opportunity to do it, they will kill him. It could be too dangerous to capture him and wait for you. That’s why I never agreed.”
“Isn’t Ben the future alpha? Doesn’t he make those decisions?”
“Yes, but I’m also his beta and his brother, and these circumstances are a little different. Alpha Roger doesn’t know about any of this. Didn’t Louise tell you?”
“She didn’t tell me everything, obviously. I didn’t realize you two were brothers. He won’t go against your word then.”
She sat down on the couch and pulled her knees to her chest. She looked torn. “I need this, Landyn. I dont know how to move on. I’ve had it set in my head that if I kill him, I could let it go.”
I sighed. “I don’t think killing him is going to take the pain away. I don’t think his death at all will help. You’ll move on and let go when you’re ready.”
“I just miss my mom, my dad, my brother, just my whole life. Silas was my best friend before I found out he was my beloved. We grew up together. I had always hoped it would end up being him, and when it was, I couldn’t have been happier. I felt like my life was complete. But now I’ve never felt so alone.I lost everything because of the rogue king and my uncle, and I don’t know how to cope with that. I doubt he left my uncle alive. So i thought i could least end him, you know?”
I sat down on the couch next to her and wrapped my arm around her. She leaned into me.
“When my dad took his own life, I dont even think i was a thought. Why would he leave his only daughter alone after just losing her mother and brother not long before that. I know he was hurting he lost her and his lover. I generally think he loved them both deeply. But he had to know what this would do to me. He was there when I was rejected. He knew I was crumbling. We could have been there for each other. I tried to be.”
“Maureen, I think he loved you. Some people just can’t get past their own grief, and the pain had to have been too much. That doesn’t mean he loved you any less. I’m sure to him it seemed like it was the only choice.”
“Thanks for this. I’ve never really talked about it before.”
“You’ve been dealing with all of this on your own?”
“After my dad killed himself, I applied to college. I may have used a little magic to get accepted sooner, and I left, and I haven’t been back here since.”
I started to rub her back. She tensed up at first but began to relax.
“I thought getting away from here, from the memories and from Silas I would be able to move on a little easier. At first, the classes were a good distraction, and then they weren’t. I begin to isolate myself. My grades actually started to drop when the dean suggested I join some groups. I agreed to be a college tour guide. That’s actually how I met Louise. We clicked, and I felt alive for the first time. Like it was meant to be. Im even weirdly comfortable with you, and we just met. I really dont usually open up this easily.”
“I’m sorry you had to go through all that. We all have our demons that haunt us. But I’m really glad I met you, and thanks for helping even if you did have your own agenda. We would have never met if it wasn’t for that. I think we’re going to be great friends.”
She smiled brightly. “I think so, too.”
“So how much do you want to piss off Silas at breakfast tomorrow?”
She slapped my arm. “We don’t need to do that. I think today got to him enough. He looked so pissed off that I was here.”
I chuckled. “I mean, yeah, he was pissed but i think he was more jealous than he was pissed.”
“Why would he be jealous?”
“Oh, you know, maybe because you had a hunky wolf next to you.”
“Oh my gosh, you sound like Conner.”
“Hey, you are the one that started the whole hunky wolf thing.”
She scowled at me. “Okay, fair enough. But im actually ready for bed, if that’s okay? I know it’s still early. “
“No, that’s fine. I just wish I had grabbed my bag out of Jeep.”
“I’ll go grab it. I need mine too.”
She snapped her fingers and vanished into the air, and about two minutes later, she returned with our bags.”
“Woah, that was so fricken cool. Thanks.”
She nodded and headed to the bathroom. She came out in black leggings and hooded sweatshirt. “It gets really cold here.”
“I can start a fire.”
She snapped her fingers again, and a fire was lit. “I got it. I just wasn’t sure if you would get too hot.”
“I’ll be fine. I usually just sleep in shorts if that’s okay?”
“Yeah, that’s fine. I’ve already seen you without one, so we’re good.”
I headed to the bathroom, and when I came out, she was snuggled into the couch with a blanket. I looked up to the TV, and she had put Harry Potter on. “Seriously? Harry Potter?” I couldn’t even contain my laugher.
She looked at me confused. “What’s so funny?”
“Oh, nothing. So, any truth to any of these spells in these movies?”
She patted the seat next to her. “Maybe you’ll have to sit and watch, and I can point out the ones that are and the ones that are full of shit.”
I chuckled. “Okay, fine. But I thought you were tired? “
“I am, but I always watch a movie before bed it helps me sleep.”
She lifted up her blanket for me to sit down, and she covered me up and turned her attention back to the TV and pressed play.
