Chapter 8

Matthew's face froze, but he said nothing.

Soon, the curtain of the fitting room was pulled back.

Charlotte emerged, wearing a magnificent wedding gown, looking like a princess from a fairytale.

Matthew immediately stood up, his eyes lighting up like never before. "Charlotte, you are the most beautiful bride I've ever seen." Daphne's face turned pale, as if she had suddenly been hit by a wave of icy cold.

Matthew dared to say something like that right in front of her.

What did he take her for?

Charlotte noticed and flashed a bright smile, taking Matthew's arm and pretending to be shy. "Oh my, Daphne is still here."

Only then did Matthew seem to remember Daphne behind him.

His expression turned awkward as he tried to explain, "Daphne, that's not what I meant..."

Daphne's heart had already gone cold. She didn't want to hear any more explanations and cut him off.

"Mr. Roberts, is there anything else? If not, I'll be leaving."

Charlotte watched with a smug look but feigned concern.

"Daphne, you can go ahead. Matthew and I need to pick out jewelry next."

Daphne didn't look back at them, turning to leave immediately.

Charlotte, seeing her leave, deliberately raised her voice as if boasting. "Oh, by the way, tomorrow night is my wedding with Matthew. You must come!" Daphne's steps faltered, a sharp pain shooting through her chest.

The next moment, she quickened her pace, fleeing from this suffocating place.

The large villa was filled with the festive atmosphere of an upcoming celebration.

Everywhere, elaborate decorations were prepared for the grand wedding.

Daphne thought coming back would be an escape, but it only suffocated her further.

She turned away and went upstairs, her eyes catching the coffee table where several styles of wedding invitations were laid out.

Couples kissing, couples embracing, couples standing side by side...

The care put into every detail was far beyond what Matthew had claimed-a simple wedding to fulfill Charlotte's wish.

Matthew intended to invite guests and show all of New York how much he cared for Charlotte.

A wave of bitterness washed over Daphne, and the bright red of the invitations burned her eyes.

She tried to suppress her feelings, convincing herself that if she didn't look, if she didn't think about it, it wouldn't hurt.

But when she returned to her room, she saw Emma carrying out her bedding.

Their eyes met, and Emma sighed sympathetically.

"Ms. Ms. Walker, Mr. Roberts asked that you move out of the master bedroom as soon as possible. It's being prepared as the bridal suite for Charlotte." It's okay to accommodate her, but it's okay to betray me?

Daphne's heart was a mess.

She turned abruptly and headed for the guest room, closing the door behind her, yet tears still streamed down her face.

As dusk approached, the sound of a car engine came from outside.

Moments later, voices full of excitement and joy echoed from downstairs: "Congratulations, young master and madam, welcome home."

In the darkness, Daphne leaned against the wall, hearing the intimate whispers from the room next door.

"Matthew, tomorrow I'll finally become your bride."

"Sleep, Charlotte. Tomorrow, you'll be my most beautiful bride."

The man's gentle voice coaxed her to sleep, while Daphne remained awake all night.

She kept reminding herself:]

Only 24 hours left.

After tonight, she and Matthew would be strangers, with no ties between them.

He would walk his bright path, and she would cross her narrow bridge alone.

When dawn broke, Matthew had already left early to prepare the venue at the hotel, and Charlotte had been taken there to get ready.

Daphne looked at the reminder on her phone-only 8 hours left.

She got up, went downstairs, and told Emma, "Please throw away all my belongings. Leave nothing behind."

Removing herself completely from his world was Daphne's greatest wedding gift to Matthew.
