Her Revenge Contract -
Chapter 85
Katherine's
POV
"False accounts?" I gasped out, surprised, "What does that mean?"
I knew there were problems with the accounts from the day I started my investigation, and John blocked my access to most of the accounts.
Then my suspension grew even more when John showed a worried expression when I applied for separate accounts.
Sophia could sense there was something wrong, and she immediately turned serious as she scanned through the reports.
"Why do you think John is acting so weirdly?" Sophia asked.
When I didn't say anything, she continued with her thoughts.
"When they are in too deep, they get stuck in that cycle. They will play dirty to ensure no one will find out what they have done."
Sophia turned around and looked at me, her face hard and cold.
"There is something hidden behind these accounts," she continued, pressing her fingers on the papers. "Under these financial accounts, it might mean that the company might be in deeper trouble than it seems. If you do find something, I can only tell you: don't wait too long. You will not be able to get out alive if they find out what you know."
"I understand," I said. "I will be careful. Thank you for your concern."
I was already prepared for whatever was to come.
Sophia was clear about the financial accounts being false, and that was the evidence I was looking for.
Later that night, I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling.
My thoughts were replaying the torture I had endured after my parents' deaths.
I could still hear the lashes connecting to my back and the wolfsbane burning down my veins. I was afraid of falling asleep.
I tightened the quilt around my body, and my fingers did not dare to let go as various images kept on playing in my mind.
My mind went into overdrive, and I could still feel myself falling into the icy water below.
I felt helpless, swallowing mouthfuls of water, and my lungs tightened as I felt myself drowning. The hopeless feeling that my whole body was surrounded by water that gradually swallowed me alive, slowly killing me, made me gasp for air.
How I wished that someone would appear and pull me out. The images changed, and my parents' faces vanished before my eyes into the darkness, and John's family was now chasing after me with silver weapons.
"Kate," Xavier's husky voice, was like a sweet melody in my ears. "Don't be afraid; I am here."
It was like he became the light in my darkness, and he stood in the center of the darkness and stretched his hand toward me.
"I will protect you; don't be afraid; just take my hand."
My eyes flew open, and I realized that I had fallen asleep; everything was just a dream. My gaze moved around the room and ended up on Xavier, lying next to me and holding on to me.
"When did you come back?" I asked and pushed Xavier away, feeling embarrassed.
"I just came back," he answered. "Julia said that you weren't feeling well after Sophia left, so I came over to see if you were okay."
My gaze fell on Xavier's slightly open shirt, revealing half of her strong chest, and I got up, crossing my arms around my chest.
"Did you have a nightmare?" Xavier asked, and I nodded my head.
"I'll tell Sophia not to tell you horror stories before you go to bed again," he teased.
If only Xavier knew that my head was spinning in all directions and that it was the reason for my nightmare. In the beginning, I was completely confident that I could completely take down John, but now it seemed that I didn't know whether I had the ability or not. Xavier looked at me a bit worriedly, took my hand, and pulled me closer. I lost my balance and landed on his rock-hard chest, and Xavier's arms snaked around me, holding me tightly.
I internally sighed. Xavier was soothing the worry right out of me.
"Have you found out where the problem was with the financials?" Xavier asked as his hand brushed over my hair.
I nodded and told Xavier everything I had found.
"Did you expect that there was something wrong with the accounts?" I asked Xavier, "Is that the reason why you requested that I open separate accounting books for the two projects?" Xavier lazily moved and pulled me closer.
"It was you who found out that the financial statements were wrong. I just reminded you to open another set of books to keep full control over them so that John didn't have any financial control over them."
Looking at Xavier's face, I could see how much he cared for me, and my feelings for him grew stronger and stronger by the day.
We snuggled for a while until I could hear soft snoring sounds coming from Xavier. I carefully moved Xavier's arm away from me, released myself, got up, and gently pulled the quilt over him.
"Good night," I whispered, smiling, turning around, and walking out of the room.
I headed to Xavier's study and pulled the reports closer. Errors in financial reporting made me nervous, and I needed to find a way to expose John.
John arrived at the company early the next morning, yet he didn't attend any meetings he was scheduled to attend.
"Sarah," I called, "please take these documents to Mr. King's office. I am still confused about yesterday's financial meeting. You can take the video of yesterday's meeting with the documents and let the chairperson watch it if he needs clarity." I said, handing the documents to her.
Sarah looked at the pile of reports. Only a few of them had traces of flipping. The others were still intact.
"Ms. Kate," Sarah gasped. "You really didn't look through it at all?" Sarah asked, worried.
I pretended to be bored and immediately waved my hand for Sarah to leave.
"After reading through the report, I still don't understand the information. Please go and return it to Mr. King's office. Don't keep him waiting for it."
Sarah nodded, hugged the file, and walked out.
I watched Sarah walk toward the elevator and quickly made my way to her PC. I knew that now that John was back, he would be bold enough to email her. I quickly opened her mailbox, and as suspected, a message from John popped up on the screen, and I clicked and read it.
"Keep an eye on Kate in the morning. Don't let her come to my office."
