Chapter 28

Bethany

I wake up and I’m instantly filled with excitement, today me and Liam are going to build the memorial, yes, I know it may sound strange for me to be excited about it but I can’t wait to have somewhere to go where I can talk to my family, somewhere that will feel like they are there with me. It’s 6.30 am and Bella is still sleeping, she slept through the night so hopefully, she is feeling better today.

I grab a quick shower while she’s still sleeping, I make quick work of washing and drying up before heading into my closet, I’ve got training after breakfast so I put on some black shorts and a matching black tank top, throw on my white converses, put 2 French braids in my hair and put a dap of l*p balm on.

The minute I’m finished Bella wakes up and thank the moon goddess she’s full of smiles this morning, checking her head she’s a lot cooler than yesterday to which relaxes the last of my worries. Wolves don’t get sick so I still don’t understand what happened with her, maybe pups can get sick because they’re so small? I make a mental note to ask the doc about it then I get my little petal ready to start the day.

“You awake Bethany?” I feel a link coming through from Brooke and I’m instantly wearing a cheesy grin as I remember I can mind link now.

“Morning Brooke, yes I’m awake and we’re both ready for breakfast.”

“How’s Bella this morning?” I go on to tell her how she’s doing before she lets me know she’ll be ready in 5 minutes and closes the link, I need to ask her to teach me how to do that part.

Within 10 minutes we’re all downstairs and find Calvin and Liam’s parents in the kitchen but not Liam, Ashley, or Jack.

“I wonder where the guys are?” Brooke quickly asks.

“They are usually the first ones down here!” comes Cal’s wary voice. I’m just about to speak when we hear a g***n coming from the doorway, we look over to see Jack walking in pulling a tired-looking Ashley behind him.

“Someone is paying for last night I see!” Cal’s quick to tease Ashley while Brooke and I instantly start laughing.

“You’re all a bunch of bitches, I’m slowly dying and you’re all having way too much fun with it!” He attempts to look grumpy but he’s failing miserably.

“Wait a second, I didn’t think werewolves could get hangovers?” I ask no one in particular.

“It’s the same as werewolves getting drunk really, it takes a hell of a lot for us to get drunk and a hell of a lot for us to get a hangover!” Cal quickly answers his amusement still gleaming across his face.

“It’s ok for you guys, I’m the poor bastard that had to deal with his drunk a*s last night and then pull his a*s out of bed this morning!” Jack rolls his eyes while Brooke and I are still in fits of giggles.

“You got a striptease out of it so why are you complaining?” Ashley’s gruff voice sounds as rough as he looks.

“No no darling, that was the closet.” Jack quickly replies.

“Oh yeah that’s right, however, you did get a lap dance off my fine a*s so you still won!” His cheesy grin is hilarious.

“No no sweetheart that was the sofa!” By this point, both Brooke and I are crying with tears.

“What about-“

“The dressing table.”

“And the-“

“The bed!” Oh, my dear god I can’t take anymore, my sides feel like they are splitting from laughing so hard and the whole table is right there with me.

“So, what exactly did you get off me last night?” Ashley looks seriously confused by this point.

“Well, you called me a hoe, snored in my face all night, hogged the blanket, and then used a few choice words instead of my name when I pulled your a*s out of bed this morning!”

“Shit…you still love me though, yes?” Ashley pulls out the puppy dog eyes while I try and concentrate on slowing down my laughing before I stop breathing.

“I do my darling I do!” They share a sweet k**s and finally we’re all able to stop laughing, God I love these guys!

“Where’s Liam?” Jack suddenly realizes he’s not here and I’m starting to get a strange feeling in my stomach. Calvin links him and he’s got a weird look on his face as he tells us that Liam will be down now and he has a surprise for everyone to see, what is he up to?

We chat among ourselves mostly about last night and Ashley’s drunken behaviour and within 15 minutes I see Liam walking towards the door with a beaming smile across his face god, he’s handsome!

“Good morning, guys.” We all look towards him and it’s clear to see his seriously excited about something.

“Guys… I’d like you to meet my mate!” YOU f*****g WHAT?

“Come here, sweetheart!” He holds his hand out and in walks a girl, she quickly curls into his side looking proud as punch and all I can think about is how he calls me sweetheart and how much I want to knock her the f**k out!

I blink and rub my eyes to make sure I’m seeing this right but there’s no denying it, it’s her, she’s his mate, Sarah’s his mate! Teenage crush or not I feel like my heart is breaking as I put on a smile while they make their way to our table.

Breakfast drags by painfully and I’ve honestly lost my appetite but I can’t show it, I can’t let anyone see how I’m feeling so instead I force down my food and keep my attention on Bella as she enjoys her pancakes and cut up watermelon.

I soon notice that everyone around the table seems really tense and I suddenly realize how weird that is, I know why I’m being off but why them? They are all coming across as happy for Liam and chatting away with him and Sarah but it seems forced, surely, they should be happy for him, but yet I get a strange feeling there’s something more going on here and I intend on finding out what it is.

“Calvin, can you cover my training class today please?” Liam asks as soon as we’ve all finished eating, Calvin agrees but again he seems tense.

“Liam, what time do you want me to meet you to do the memorial?” I’m still excited to get it done regardless of what’s going on.

“Oh, sorry Bethany, I won’t be able to do that today, I’m helping Sarah move her stuff onto my floor, can we reschedule for another day?” What the…this doesn’t sound like the Liam I know; he’s speaking to me in his formal Beta tone and I don’t like it. Liam is always there for me and he always keeps any plans he makes with me but what can I do? NOTHING!

“Of course, Liam, it’s no problem!” I force another smile his way but inside I feel like I’m being torn apart! I make my excuses about needing to get Bella to variety before I quickly leave the kitchen as fast as I can, well it wasn’t a lie but she didn’t need to be there this early.

Nonetheless, I drop Bella off with variety, link Brooke, and tell her I’m heading out for a walk and run from the packhouse as quickly as I can, I need to get away from this place before I lose my s**t and everyone starts asking questions.

Alpha Calvin

I’m sat at the Alpha table with everyone aside from Liam, Sarah, and Beth. Liam and Sarah disappeared to move her stuff and Beth took Bella to variety before she linked Brooke to tell her she was going for a walk. I make a mental note to check in with her soon and focus back on the people in front of me.

“What the f**k is going on?” Jack is the first one to break the silence.

“Before we start discussing this, let’s go to my office, too many ears about!” No one else needs to know about Liam and Bethany. We quickly head up to my floor, I take a seat in my chair behind my desk.

Brooke goes to sit next to me but I quickly pull her into my lap while Jack takes a seat in front of my desk and Ashley crawls into his lap still feeling sorry for himself with his hangover. Both Liam’s and my parents have also joined us, they know about Beth and Liam and have been huge helps so they deserve to be in on what’s going on.

“Please tell me someone knows what’s going on?” Jack’s straight back to the conversation within seconds.

“I’ll be f****d if I know!” I manage to grunt out

“I don’t understand any of this but these tiny t***s that keep banging inside my head are not helping one bit! We all laugh his way, honestly, he is the only person that could make us laugh in this situation.

“Baby, why don’t you go and take a nap and then I’ll update you later?” Jack cooes his way.

“I want to but I can’t, I won’t be able to nap with all this going on, I can’t!”

“Well Beth’s gone for a walk, why don’t you try and catch up with her? None of us knows how she’s feeling right now and she trusts in you, maybe she’ll talk to you!” As usual, Brooke is thinking of everyone else’s feelings. He agrees and after giving Jack a very happy k**s he drags his a*s out of the room and off to find Bethany.

“So, guys any ideas here? because I’m at a loss!” Jack leans forwards resting his elbows on his knees while he rubs his face and Brooke just stares at the wall.

“There’s got to be something strange going on here, I know she said that her first mate rejected her last night so that’s how they found out but that doesn’t make sense because Liam already knows Bethany is his first mate so even if the bond was severed between Sarah and her first mate whoever he may be, she still wouldn’t sense Liam as her second change mate because his wolf is already linked to Bethany’s wolf!” Jack has finally got his Gamma head-on and I’m grateful for it because I’m at a f*****g loss!

“s**t Jack your right! and did you guys see how he looked at Beth at breakfast, it was the same look he gives us not her, and on top of that he never calls her Bethany unless she’s in trouble and he always sneaks looks at her when he thinks no one’s looking but today…today was as if he barely knew her!”

“And more than anything he’s let her down today with building the memorial without a care in the world and we all know he hates even the idea of letting anyone down but with Bethany, f**k he’d cut his own arm off before he’d let her down and yet today, he just brushed it aside!” Jack’s anger is starting to rise and I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t being met with my own.

“Something is going on here and I intend on finding out exactly what it is!” I growl out. Both sets of parents stand up at the same time looking heartbroken and it doesn’t help calm the anger that’s taking hold of my body.

“If you find out anything or need any help, please let us know!” My parents send me a sad look as they leave the office.

“Brooke, I don’t know what’s going on but something isn’t right, Liam wouldn’t ever behave like this, he already loves Bethany as his mate, there’s no way he would willingly hurt her like this!”

“I know that Mary, don’t doubt that for a second, there’s an explanation to all of this and we will find out what it is, this doesn’t change how I feel about Liam being Bethany’s mate!” She sends them both a gentle assuring smile before they bid their goodbyes and leave the room

“Jack, you have a class to train now, right?”

“Yup!”

“Ok you go and do that and me and Brooke will try and find Liam, see if we can talk to him and try to make some sense of this, I’ll link you later and update you and Ashley!” He agrees before heading out to the training grounds while Brooke and I quickly leave my office and head for the Beta floor. What the f**k has happened to you brother?
