Chapter 58

Calvin

“Cal, Cal wake up!”

“CAL WAKE UP!” I start stirring from my sleep to Brooke’s voice, it usually takes me a few minutes to wake up when Brooke wakes me, her voice is so soothing to my ears that it’s too easy for me to fall back to sleep but that doesn’t happen this time, my brain quickly registers the panic in her voice and I’m instantly awake and alert.

“Brooke baby what’s wrong?” She goes to speak but instead curls into herself and screens out in pain. I immediately sit up and get beside her, I can feel her emotions, feel how scared she is and I’m pretty sure she’s in labour.

“The baby, I think he’s coming, it’s too soon Cal, two weeks too soon!” She’s breathing harsh and panicking and honestly so am I not that I let her see it, I use everything I have to calm down my body so she doesn’t feel my panic and start gently rubbing her back as she cries out through another contraction.

“Doc, your Luna is in labour, get everything prepared we will be with you shortly!” He quickly links me back excitement ringing out from every word he speaks and I can’t help but smile, that is until Brooke cries out again.

“Cal something doesn’t feel right!” Brooke yells out, I don’t know a lot about the labour process, should properly have read up on it more but from what I do know things don’t seem right, these contractions are coming in seriously fast, she doesn’t seem to be getting a break and I’m pretty sure they shouldn’t be this close or this painful yet.

“Everything’s going to be ok baby, doc is getting ready for us!”

“What’s wrong?” I spin around to find Beth standing by the doorway, Brooke’s screams must have woken her up.

“Brookes in labour sweetheart, everything’s ok don’t worry, can you go check on Bella for me please?” She hesitantly leaves the room while I run to the closet, throw on some clothes quickly and grab a pair of my joggers for Brooke, she’s only wearing one of my t-shirts and panties.

Beth soon returns and it’s clear to see she’s panicking, I don’t blame her I may be controlling my body for Brooke’s sake but my mind is something else, panic is firmly placed in my head. “How’s Bella sweetheart?”

“She’s still sleeping, she’s fine!”

“That… girl… can… sleep… through… anything!” Brooke pants out, a smile plastered across her face, only she could be smiling with all the pain she’s in.

“Where are your parents… I want your mom!” She manages to get out in between her pants, she has become incredibly close with my parents and even more so with my mom and I love it, she was broken when she lost her own and I know mine will never replace them but I also know she loves them as if they were her own parents and honestly for them, she is the daughter they never had.

“Mom are you awake?”

“MOM!” Come on mom wake up!

“What’s the matter, son?” Thank goddess for that!

“Mom Brooke is in labour and she’s asking for you, for you and dad, can you come over?”

“Oh wow, of course, son, we’ll be right over!” The excitement is clear to hear and I know they will be here in minutes. Brooke manages to get a pain free moment so I use the opportunity to get the joggers on her, setting her back down just in time as another contraction tears through her, she grips my neck with one hand, her nails piercing my neck while her other hand grabs my tee-shirt yanking as hard as she can.

“Breathe baby, look at me, I’ve got you!” Her tear-filled ears tear into mine, f**k I would give anything to swap places with her right now, to take her pain away. I hear a noise and looking up I can see Bethany with tears in her eyes, she’s struggling to see Brooke in so much pain as am I.

“Liam, are you awake brother?” I link him serval times but he doesn’t answer, I know he’s been catching up on his sleep since Bethany returned which is great but I could really do with him right now, Bethany needs him!

“Cal where are you son?” My dad’s voice echos through the hallway and Beth rushes off to get them, within seconds they are in the room and my moms at Brooke’s side, the relief I see in Brooke’s eyes as she leans into my mom is a huge relief and helps me gather my thoughts for a moment.

“Dad, can you go and wake Liam up please? he’s not answering my link and right now Bethany needs him!” My dad nods in response to my link and leaves the bedroom, while my mom comforts Brooke I use the moment to get hers and the baby’s bag from the closet.

I turn to check on Bethany but see her run into the bathroom as she loses control of her tears, I know she’s worried about Brooke but I have a feeling there is more to her behavior than I realise.

“CAL, I NEED YOU!” Brooke screams out and I bolt to her side.

“I’m here baby, I’m here!”

“I need to stand up!” I give her a nod as she wraps her arms around my neck, I gently help her to stand but she doesn’t leave go of my neck, instead, she rests her face on my chest and starts swaying back and forth.

I gently start to run soothing circles on her back, kissing her temple and whispering reassuring words in her ear, I honestly haven’t got a clue about what I’m doing but I feel her slightly relax so I keep going with it.

I hear the door going and seconds later Liam and my dad appear at the bedroom door, his face full of concern.

“Hey Brooke, stupid question I know but how are you doing?” She answers him with a cry as she pulls on my shirt fighting through another contraction, my worries are rising and this niggling feeling that something isn’t right kept resurfacing.

“Your dad said you needed me, where do you want me?” This guy is incredible, a woman in labour would chase most people away, but not him here he is ready to get stuck in where needed.

“Bethany is struggling, I know she’s worried about Brooke but I have a feeling there’s more to it, she went into the bathroom crying a few minutes ago, I was going to follow her but I thought I’d wait for you!” I link him because I know hearing this won’t help Brooke.

He gives me a nod and heads for the bathroom, he knocks on the door but she doesn’t answer, after a few seconds I see his resolves drop he links me telling me he’s got Bethany and Bella covered, to link him if I need anything then he opens up the door and heads inside the bathroom, closing the door behind him.

“Baby, we need to get you to the doc now, ok?” She gives me a gentle nod but the look on her face breaks my heart. I gently lift her into my arms while my mom keeps hold of one of her hands and my dad grabs her bags and leads the way opening the doors along the way.

We quietly pass the Gamma floor, not to disturb Ash, Jack or willow, the reason I haven’t woken them up tonight is that they have only had willow one week and that girl does not sleep, not that the guys ever complain, they are loving every moment of being parents but I won’t disturb them in the night unless it’s absolutely necessary.

We quickly make it to the pack hospital, I get Brooke on the bed and the doc is quick to get started on examining her while a nurse goes between her legs to check her, my parents try to leave the room but Brooke won’t have any of it!

Within a moment of the doc starting his work, I can see by the look on his face that something’s not right. “Doc what’s going on?” He hesitates for a second before he sees the look on my face, I want the truth and I want it now!

“Alpha the pup’s heartbreak is dangerously low!”

“Doc she’s not dilating at all, there’s no change!”

“Alpha, we need to get the pup out as soon as possible, I’m concerned for him!”

“Do what you need to do doc!” Brooke shouts out and I’m quick to agree.

“Ok Brooke, we are going to get you ready and we will perform a caesarean section!” We both agree but I can feel Brooke’s fear through our bond, it matches my own but I need to stay calm for her. I take her face in my hands and k**s her forehead, whispering reassuring words in her ear, slowly feeling her calm slightly under me while I silently pray to the moon-goddess to keep my mate and son safe.

Beta Liam

I open the bathroom door, stepping inside I see Beth sitting on the floor leaning against the wall, her knees curled up to her chest, her head buried in her lap and her arms wrapped around her legs and I notice her shoulders slightly rise and fall, I know she’s crying and it’s breaking my f*****g heart.

She’s so lost to her tears that she hasn’t even noticed me come in here, either that or she’s incredibly good at not showing it. I hear movement in the bedroom and soon there’s nothing, they have left and it’s just me and my girl now!

“Bethany!” I call out gently but she doesn’t move.

“Bethany sweetheart!” Still, nothing, s**t what the f**k is going on? I slowly make my way over to her, standing in front of her I get down on my hutches but still, she doesn’t move.

“Can you look at me, sweetheart?” She nods her head but only rises her head slightly, I hock my finger under her chin and raise her head until she has no choice but to look at me and the look I see on her face physically hurts my heart.

“Talk to me sweetheart, what’s going on in that pretty head of yours huh?” Her big blue eyes pour into mine and I know that no matter where life takes us, I will tear down the world not to have to see this look on her face again!

“I can’t lose her!” Huh? Oh s**t!

“No, no you’re not going to lose her Beth!”

“You don’t know that no one does, Sarah died from complications giving birth and I know that there’s something wrong with Brooke, I can’t lose her too Liam I can’t!”

By the time she finishes talking she is sobbing her heart out and I can’t bear it anymore, I sit down and pull her into my lap, she presses her face into my neck while one hand grips my top and her body shakes with the tears she releases.

I wrap one arm around her body pulling her tight to me and I gently rub her back with the other while I whisper into her ear, trying everything I can to calm her down, seeing her in this mess is killing me, I feel like my insides are being torn apart.

Once I feel her starting to calm down, I tilt her head up so I can see her face and thankfully her tears seem to be slowing down.

“Listen to me my little wolf, Sarah died because she didn’t allow the doc to treat her soon enough, that was on her and no one else, ok?” She nods but I know she doesn’t feel any better and she won’t until we hear from Brooke or Cal, we stay on the floor none of us talking as she continues to hold on to me while I rub her back and it takes everything in me not to k**s her temple, just to be able to comfort her some more.

I’m not sure how long we stay there but soon enough I get a link from Cal.

“Now my little wolf, how about we get Bella and go and meet our new nephew? His mom can’t wait to see you!” She looks shocked for a moment but it soon turns to a beaming smile that fills my heart, she dives off my lap leaving Jonah pouting and runs towards the nursery to get Bella.

Soon enough we reach the pack hospital and both Cal and Brooke are beaming while Brooke holds a little bundle in her arms. We step closer and Bella instantly makes grabby hands towards Calvin, he smiles wide and swipes her away from Beth before our attention is drawn back to Brooke.

“Hey, Levi are you ready to meet your auntie and uncle now?”
